turns out what we’re hearing may be a combination of indigenous singing and later-introduced Western choral music, depending on exactly where we’re hearing it
certain levels of polyphonic singing were there already when Captain Cook first arrived, as well as in other tribal societies in Melanesia, Micronesia, China, Vietnam, New Guinea etc
but also, many links and albums you’ll land on clearly originated with Western hymnal music introduced later when missionaries arrived

Sometimes my brain goes wandering off by itself while I am busy doing ‘something’, like reading the open thread at TCH or writing.
Today it has left me with the following ‘I wonder’…

I usually have the TV on for company. I don’t really listen to the program. For instance, Murder She Wrote is on. Then there are the commercials…
Have you ever paid attention … not to the words, but how the words are said? Usually the ‘program’ is more mild than the commercials – but try to ‘talk’ the way they talk.
Doesn’t really matter what the source is – TV, Radio, Movie – they all do the same thing. They don’t talk like normal people. You can contrast with a local TV interview of locals.
We’ve been ‘exposed’ to this kind of talk for the better part of 100 years. So if it is SO influential, why don’t we talk like the paid ‘stars’. In fact, with some commercials I believe they are deliberately offensive. Yelling at each other does not make me want to buy whatever they are selling.
Give a listen to the rhythm, when and how they emphasize words – and, of course, which words they emphasize. “FREE” is a biggie, don’t ‘cha know?
