In this interview Naomi Wolf is one of the few people I have seen who correctly starts her discussion by dispatching the linguistics and framing her own baseline argument. All politicians and candidates for office should watch how Wolf responds to the first question from Tucker Carlson, and then makes the better argument.
Wolf doesn’t waste time debating “misinformation”, “disinformation”, or “malinformation”, instead she accurately just says those things do not exist. Information stands undefined. I’ve been watching a lot of WWII documentaries, several on the last months of the War, including the fall of Berlin.
It is fascinating to see how the German people, especially the die-hard Nazis, continued to embrace Gobbel’s propaganda that Germany could still win the War, even as their war making industry and material had been destroyed, their army was being made up of old men and boys, and Berlin was surrounded by overwhelming Russian armies. Many, including Hitler, still believed they could win even as Russian cannon bombarded central Berlin.
Whatever can be said about Gobbels, he did a masterful job of controlling all print, radio and celluloid media to construct a narrative such that the average German became a fanatical Nazi who believed their aggression was just and they disappearance and even murder (“Night of the Long Knives”) of political/social foes was for the good of the state. Of course this zeal waned as the situation grew more hopeless, until it polarized the Germans into cynics and zealots…creating more death and destruction, until Gobbel’s and Hitler’s death. But by then, too late.
Our First Amendment is first because the Founders knew how crucial free speech is to freedom. It boggles my mind that our government and our press do not understand our Constitution or know the destructive history of state controlled speech. Or….they do understand and know? They have to, to do what they are doing.

Having been part of a free speech platform, anecdotally, somewhere south of 10% can handle free speech. The platform was unsuccessful because 90% of the people who joined ultimately quit because they couldn’t handle the conflict. They either believed it was biased against conservatives or biased against liberals. Most prefer an echo chamber. The 10% or so that could tolerate completely free speech, could debate issues and even have heated arguments, and still remain friendly with those whom they disagreed with. There were all sorts of people, even white supremacists. The people who had the most trouble dealing with free speech were the progressive liberals and the ultraconservatives. Conservatives in general had the tendency of applying a purity test and, consequently, tended to be loners. Liberals had a tendency to support each other no matter what the subject. Progressive liberals tended to use any means possible to win an argument, including doxxing to silence their opponents.
Most people can’t deal with completely free speech. If Twitter or any platform were to impose or tolerate free speech, it would fail. Most people would disagree with that statement, but, in reality, their actions would prove me out. I support completely free speech. I don’t mind having conversations with white supremacists or black supremacists or liberals or anyone else I disagree with.
That is interesting. I have felt such an oddball because of my high tolerance/ability to stomach the conflict which can arise in open debate, and I have always loved a good discussion on a controversial topic. But it has been very hard to find others willing to engage! (there is a time and place for open debate, and I’m socialized enough to understand that in certain settings I need to put on my best manners and not push the envelope of politeness…. but the goalposts have certainly moved over the years)
This was true even back in the early 1980s when speech was much freer, when I was in college. But I sure do miss those days, when people were much less likely to take offense, and not so many topics were off limits. Political correctness was there, but it was not in your face.

I cordially disagree with that conclusion, Leroy. However, this is why all forums – including this one – must have moderators who are not censors. A good moderator enforces civilized behavior upon the conversation and hoes out the weeds, but does not directly seek to control the train of thought. It is the same important role that a moderator plays in formalized debate.
Some well-known sites have dealt with this issue by shutting-down their “comment sections” altogether, or making them subscription-only. And, I have found that I really don’t miss them at all. It is, however, an important element of CTH, and you can see that the [good …] moderators are out there even though you don’t notice them per se.
I agree and disagree, however. If I were confronted with a loud-mouthed lunatic who had nothing to say but couldn’t stop saying it, I would indeed leave … at least that area.

I agree with your comments, but moderators can be biased, too. I’ve had my comments deleted for simply disagreeing on another site. I had one comment here deleted when I went against the narrative. It had to do with this and other sites reporting that the reported election night numbers were impossible or fraudulent. I factually explained why it wasn’t. I’m always civil, sometimes sarcastic, and never obnoxious. I try to be objective with the facts, even if it favors those I disagree with.
I have a theory that all threads eventually devolve into name-calling, usually between two individuals. Sometimes, it happens early on, sometimes after the conversation starts to die out. It kills the conversation. The site I reference allowed the OP to moderate the comments on his thread. Some felt it violated free speech. I disagree. I rarely used it and never used it with comments directed at me, but, when the name-calling started, I deleted the comments unapologetically. Some felt the need to apologize and explain. I think these loud-mouth lunatics know what they do it wrong.

You correctly argue the flip side to free speech, the freedom from speech. If someone is saying something you don’t like, block them. Easy. The difficulty with open conversation and assertive discussion is that 95 % of people want to have the advantage, they want to control what they are afraid or uncertain of. Very few people are not insecure about what does not fit inside their comfort bubble, their illusionary view of what society is, instead of accepting the ugly reality of what society has become. Most people that have accepted this reality are people such as us, who can offer perspectives for open discussion and not get resentful when someone disagrees or presents a counter point.

He said his teacher assigned an in-class writing exercise having to do with group thinking and the Holocaust. In the middle of it she called a student’s name for an infraction. She really reamed him out and asked him to leave the room and to go to the principal’s office…which he did. The story teller said he knew, the others all knew, this lad was not guilty, but they all sat there.
When the teacher came back into the room, she said, “See how that works? That’s how it happened.”
And like you with your story, this person said he never forgot that lesson either.

I first heard the term disinformation when the KGB was in business. They used the term liberally to describe any lies told about the old Soviet Union.
Not much has changed in the last 3 decades.
Cable TV News is a big part of this problem because it is so superficial. They spend a few minutes on any one topic or guest, then move on. Their enemy is not the clock, their enemy is the guy with the clicker in his hand, and a short attention span.
Along with frequent changes of topic, they “billboard”: they talk a lot about the guest that’s coming up.
Tucker only gives a couple minutes of air time even to someone with something worthwhile to say, like Mark Steyn. Now some censorship monster has apparently eaten Steyn.
Easier to get guests and topics censored when they get so little time, anyway.

Good to have a lefty who hasn’t gone over the edge, at least yet, explain the left’s tactics, etc.
I think the term “N-word” was in a sense, the term that got the ball rolling. Creating boundaries for word usage but then throwing it around in all sorts of media gave people permission to judge with vitriol and punishment those who weren’t allowed to use it if they dared utter it. Even in private.
I’m not saying one should use it; I’m saying that NO one should or ANY one should be able to without significant retribution.
Creating tiers of permissable language is divisive.
The first two terms have been well understood to differentiate between the unintentional and deliberate spreading of false information; but malinformation is a realtively new tern that I had not heard of until recently, so I did a little bit of research and found out some interesting facts.
One of the definitions of malinformation can be a true fact that is being used in the wrong context, instantly injecting subjective reasoning into a previously objective process. Another is a true fact that is used to cause harm to an individual or organisation, a definition that is open to abuse, as an example the Hunter Biden laptop suppression and doubts about vaccines fit both definitions.
So, when was this new term forged and could it give a clue as to why this term was invented? The first use was in in a white paper published by the Council of Europe in 2017, by researchers Claire Wardle and Hossein Derakshan, who created the Wardle Derakshan Framework which used the term malinformation, along with the traditional definitions. Further research shows that Claire Wardle left her UK university job to become the executive director of First Draft, a Google News Lab product founded in 2015 to ‘fight mis and disinformation online’. It also included Facebook, Twitter and the Open Society Foundations, again, I’d obviously heard about the first two, but the last made me suspicious as anything calling for an open society is often interested in just the opposite, and so it was. The Open Society is funded and chaired by none other than George Soros.
So yes, attack the whole premise of the argument, but don’t forget, to understand a weapon’s purpose you have to understand it’s developmental background. The left have created a new word whose definition is being used as though it’s subjective definition is really an objective fact and they are using this word to decide whether to suppress information.
It also gives another reason for the Left’s hysterics over Elon Musks buyout, their strategy of subjective online censorship is now at risk. After all, a dam is only useful if it has no holes!

In all the years of the gay marriage debate they hijacked “tolerate.”
It used to mean we disagree but accept each other: “agree to disagree.”
Those promoting the so-called gay agenda twisted it to mean “accept my viewpoint.”
So, if you didn’t accept their view, then you were “intolerant.”
Won’t even get into the actual word “gay” itself.
