You might remember: October 13, 2021, Joe Biden delivered widely carried remarks about specific actions his administration was taking to increase operations at the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and the Port of Long Beach (POLB).
Here we take a closer look at the claims since the original announcement, and then highlight the actual results from the ports. The port operations are actually doing worse today than they were in October. They are less efficient, less productive and have handled less freight in November than they did in October. The factual results are exactly the opposite of the administration claims.
The October 13, 2021, White House fact sheet is HERE, “announcing a series of public and private commitments to move more goods faster, and strengthen the resiliency of our supply chains, by moving towards 24/7 operations at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.” On November 17, 2021, the White House gave an update, “Recent Progress at Our Ports: Moving Cargo and Filling Shelves” and claiming the increased hours of operations were delivering on the White House expectations of increased productivity and offloading capacity.
Throughout these past 11 weeks, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg have been claiming their supply chain task force has been successful in generating exceptional results. They claimed changing the hours of operations increased the port capacity, specifically targeting the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. However, if we look at the actual records from both ports, we find exactly the opposite:
Ports record their data in 20-foot equivalent units, or TEU’s. The Port of Los Angeles data shows they handled 468,713 import containers in October, and 405,309 in November. That’s a decrease of 63,404 import containers from the prior month. [DATA LINK]
The Port of Los Angeles is the largest port of the two. The POLA also showed a decrease in Total TEU’s handled (import and export). As you can see above, the total TEU’s handled in October was 902,643. The total TEU’s handled in November was 811,459.
That’s a decrease of 91,184 total containers handled. This is the exact opposite of what Biden, Harris and Buttigieg are claiming.
♦ Next, we look at the Port of Long Beach (POLB). [DATA HERE]
Again, we note the Total Loaded containers (carrying cargo) in October 2021, the month of the White House announcement, was 507, 214. In the full month of November 2021, the total of loaded containers handled was 472,215. That’s a decrease of 34,999 containers.

There is a disconnect between what the White House, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg are saying, and the actual results of what is taking place at the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles. They claim hours of operation have expanded to increase capacity, yet fewer containers are being handled?
Perhaps the administration did not expect anyone to check when they claimed on November 29th:
“The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach—which handle 40 percent of the country’s containerized imports—continue to show improvement in moving containers out of the docks and into warehouses.” [White House link]
Despite what the White House Supply Chain Disruption Taskforce is claiming, the actual records from the ports do not concur. Someone is clearly lying, and/or not expecting anyone to check.
There’s a strong possibility they did not expect anyone to notice, because part of their logistical scheme involved telling the ship operators to wait further offshore so that it would give the illusion of less congestion near port:
CALIFORNIA – […] “Starting Nov. 16, ships waiting to anchor at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will have to wait for a green light about 150 miles from the coast, the Pacific Merchant Shipping Assn., the Pacific Maritime Assn. and the Marine Exchange of Southern California said in a statement Thursday. That compares with 20 nautical miles (23 miles) now. North- and southbound vessels must remain more than 50 miles from the state’s coastline.” (read more)
Apparently, what the White House taskforce did was to move the line of awaiting cargo ships further offshore to make them less visible. Then, it appears, the White House just started making up talking points about productivity at the ports increasing and capacities expanding; neither claim is based on facts that surface in the actual operations of the ports.
The outcomes speak for themselves. Both the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach handled less cargo and fewer containers in the first full month of the “new expanded operations” than they did in the previous month when the expanded operations were announced.
In order to remind ourselves how big an issue this was for the White House, watch the Biden announcement from October 13, 2021, again.

Ships are stacking up in Vancouver, BC too. I often check Marine Traffic dot com to identify the ships we can see passing through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The map shows more anchored and waiting bulk transports, container ships and RO-RO ships around Vancouver and off the SE side of Vancouver island than I’ve ever seen before. I can’t recall ever seeing them stacked up in the passages between Vancouver island the Gulf Islands before. Some of that has to do with the terrible flooding in Vancouver. Wonder if the pols there also play the “never let a crisis go to waste” game?

My husband, a native Californian, who grew up in Long Beach, drove by in late November and said he’s never seen so many containers there. He also saw only ONE container transport truck on the 110 Fwy . . . The main artery into and out of the port. We left CA on 11/30. No regrets.

As I understand IRS $100 a day for each container not moved. Ships kept out if line of sight means longer transit and unload times. Then they get fined for the containers not moved fast enough. Buttegeig and FJB have fixed nothing.
First they threatened them with fines for containers sitting for two long and claim the threats of fines were having the desired effect. All that seems to have happened is they moved containers to where they could not be fined. From the port to off port facility.
The last I checked LA was only threatening to fine empties starting January 30th.
However, if the Biden administration is going to get beaten for his failure, the threats of fines will likely come back with a vengeance.
Whipping shippers with fines that cause them to move containers from Point A to Point B only works if Point B is the final destination.
I think we know by now that the actors in this administration are all disposable. The ones pulling the strings are happy to use them as the poster children of the disaster in the works (the so necessary disaster before the ‘Reset’). A silver lining: That we’ll never see Buttigieg again in any serious role.

Today’s morning paper has the headline: Shelves Could Be Empty For Weeks – Coles Boss. Coles is one of two of Australia’s largest supermarket retailers.

The conventional wisdom is that the Fed’s recent emergency lending facilities to Wall Street were caused by the COVID-19 crisis. The above chart, which uses the New York Fed’s own Excel spreadsheet repo loan data, shows the conventional wisdom is dangerously wrong.
In the last quarter of 2019 – before there was any news of COVID-19 in the U.S., and months before the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic – the Fed pumped $4.5 trillion in cumulative repo loans to unnamed trading houses on Wall Street – its so-called “primary dealers.”
The Fed does repos or repurchase agreements where banks pledge securities for funding and reverse repos, where the fed moves securities off its balance sheet and takes bank liquidity out of the system, at the end of each quarter and more heavily at year end. Banks play this game to “tidy” up there balance sheet to lesson the amount of their FDIC insurance premium among other things. Improve YE end ratios.

Reports here in Fresno said Almond Farmers lost millions because no containers to ship the almonds.
As I said on the 1st post, the rail cars headed east are full of double stacked containers. The rail cars headed west are empty. They are dumping the containers somewhere else. This is the midwest and that is the view from my office window.
When President TRUMP was in office they were full both ways and ran incessantly.
On Top of the Hill Daly City (on the Southern Border of San Francisco), you can see a line of Cargo Ships spaced apart holding station on the horizon.
In my almost 5 decades of life, every time I’d see the Pacific in the past from that spot you would never see the same Ship at the same position twice.
Also fun note. The Wendy’s in Daly City has a sign asking Patrons to be patient as there are “Supply Chain Issues.”

You can have all of the dock workers you want working as many hour as you want and it won’t make any difference if there aren’t enough trucks to move them !! The California Air Resources board has cut the Achilles tendon of the trucking industry inside California. The emissions restrictions have been lowered so much that any truck more than 4 years old can’t run in CA !! There were many companies dedicated to moving containers in and out of CA that have quit or moved to another state because their trucks didn’t comply and they couldn’t afford new ones. So if you want to blame something for the problem, blame CA and its evil arm- CARB.
CARB – UBER – JAB
CARB – mandates as of January 1st, 2022 that only truck of Model year 2011 or newer can deliver containers. However, the diesel emissions controls require computer chips that are stuck in the containers on the ships that can’t be offloaded, so you can’t get new trucks or replacement parts for the “newer” trucks that are broken. There are fewer an fewer qualified trucks able to deliver.
UBER – the same California law that turned owner operators from contractors to employees of Uber and Lyft has now kept all owner operator truck drivers out of the ports. Had a friend move from Indiana to California and the owner operator of his moving van delivered all his household goods to his new house in the middle of the night onto his new front lawn so the owner operator wouldn’t get caught, ticketed and forced to pay fines.
JAB – Drivers that refuse the JAB cannot operate in California Ports.
Eliminate all the trucks and drivers and a Sundance shows, it only gets worse.

Add to that another problem. The ships waiting off shore for days / weeks will get paid 10’s of thousands of dollars per day (if not more) to sit and wait to unload. As a result the waiting ships will cause a shortage of vessels available to broker for loads.
This will cause increases in per day rates these companies charge to ship cargo. These increased expenses will eventually show up at the checkout line.
Everything from and about this administration is false.

Just had HVAC work done at my house. Tech told me there is a Nationwide shortage on flex duct.
Tried to get a whole house generator, but again, nationwide shortage.
Bought bikes for my kids this Christmas, but extremely limited selection. Nationwide shortage of bikes.
Bought a used vehicle last month since most of the area dealers have few, if any, vehicles.
Picked up a rental car yesterday from a major rental agency. Worst car ever. I’ve gotten better vehicles from Rent-a-Wreck.
Meat at the grocery store is atrocious. Got some spoiled chicken breasts last week.
