The Minneapolis City Council has agreed to give the family of George Floyd $27 million in the largest settlement in the city’s history. It is not a stretch to see a situation where Minneapolis is paying out this $27 million settlement because they now have an influx of federal cash to support or replace it.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The city of Minneapolis on Friday agreed to pay $27 million to settle a civil lawsuit from George Floyd’s family over the Black man’s death in police custody, even as jury selection continued in a former officer’s murder trial.
The Minneapolis City Council emerged from closed session to announce the record settlement, which includes $500,000 for the neighborhood where Floyd was arrested. Floyd family attorney Ben Crump called a news conference for 1 p.m. that was to include family members.

George Floyd was not murdered. But he also was not saved, and that is the nub of the problem.
If a white guy suspected of passing bogus 20’s had been removed from his car by police, but then showed obvious distress, grabbed his chest and left arm, and told them he couldn’t breathe, their response almost certainly would have been to immediately call the paramedics and have him taken to the hospital. Maybe he would have been cuffed to the gurney, but the police officers would have sent him to the hospital.
Floyd was foaming at the mouth. The police response to Floyd’s obvious distress and pleas that he couldn’t breathe should have been to immediately call paramedics and send him to the hospital. A hit of NARCAN on the way there, and he would probably be in jail today instead of in a grave. But that was NOT their response. Their response was to pin him to the ground with a knee on his neck.
The arresting officers had a duty to Floyd as a citizen, a fellow human, to get him medical help when he was in obvious distress. They should have saved him. They didn’t. They failed him, and by extension they failed Minneapolis. And Minneapolis is paying for their failure.
Growing up a blue collar kid in a blue collar town, I know a bit about powerlessness and bully cops. But I also know about good cops, family friends, who watched over the local teens working late at the local businesses, making sure they were safe. Serving and protecting. I know how it is SUPPOSED to work. I’ve lived it.
It is not supposed to work the way it did for Floyd. I sympathize with Floyd and his family.

That last observation is in line with the previous report by Dr. Roland Fryer, the youngest black, tenured professor at Haavaad, who showed that if anything, police use lethal force against minorities at rates below the rate employed against white suspects when arrested for comparable crimes. Dr. Fryer set out to show that police used lethal force against minorities at rates which exceeded their use of lethal force employed when the suspect being arrested was white. That means his findings went exactly counter to what he wanted to find. (Oh, did I mention that Dr. Fryer is black, so he had an interest in showing that police were targeting people of his skin color.) Does that mean anything to you, Ben?
Oh, and that report from Dr. Fryer was followed up by another report by researchers from Michigan and Maryland which tried to refute the previous findings of Dr. Fryer. They only confirmed Dr. Fryer’s results. Of course, after their results confirmed the previous results, the “woke” crowd told them they had to change their findings even though what they reported 1) confirmed previous work, and 2) was subject to the peer review process wherein other experts in the field look specifically for problems with the research as it is reported.
But I suppose that none of this means anything to you, Ben, when there is an opportunity to extort huge sums of money and to further stoke racial tension and fear rather than promote peace.
