Thursday October 3rd – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    Banners To Display

If there is one thing that God would have His people do amid the rising apostasy of our day it is to show their colors. As the enemy comes in like a flood, even Bible-believing Christians are apt to hide a banner which they should unfurl and boldly display. That banner is Christ. How many believers fear to speak up for Him because His name is increasingly despised!

But, as in any war of any size, many and varied flags are carried into battle, this is so in the Christian conflict too, for the Bible, godly living, faithful comrades, etc., are all banners by which we should take our stand, flags we should display.

One such banner is fundamentalism, a slogan, a battle cry, which many believers are putting aside and hiding away just when they should display and wave it boldly. Some, recognizing the spiritual decline among fundamentalists, prefer to be called simply believers or Christians. We can appreciate this point of view but do not feel it is valid in this time of spiritual crisis.

At a time when the fundamentals of the Christian faith are being threatened as never before, we can do much to show that we stand for these basic doctrines, identifying ourselves openly with them by calling ourselves fundamentalists. The rapid pace at which the apostasy is rising about us makes it the more urgent that we display this banner. We believe that there is strong Scriptural support for this view, e.g., in Acts 23:6, where we read that Paul called himself a Pharisee to show that he stood for basic Bible doctrine and against those who denied it.

    Bible-believing Christian: show your colors!

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Acts 23:6 But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

2 Corinthians 3:1 Do we begin again to commend ourselves? or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?
2 Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men:
3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
4 And such trust have we through Christ to God-ward:
    5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;

6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
9 For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory.
10 For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth.
11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech:
13 And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.
15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.
16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.
17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

That all depends on how much you trust Bob Barr with your money.

    • icanhasbailout says:

Also… if you have money to spend to help restore the Republic, you won’t get a better bang for your dollar anywhere than Judicial Watch right now.. and really, I could probably find you a thousand better ways to use political money than giving it to Bob Barr, who has been inconsistent, to say the least. I invite Barr or a supporter to give a counter argument, if any are out there.

After JW, it wouldn’t hurt to take notice of the new crop of independent conservative reporters that have risen to the daunting challenge of getting information out around the MSM embargo: Sharyl Atkisson comes to mind as a particularly good value, but there are many others worth your support. There’s a conservative videoblogosphere, so to speak, with people like Steven Crowder making really big impacts on very small investments. You could also consider something like Project Veritas, which, despite being flawed, has incredible achievements (e.g. taking down ACORN with investigative reporting) on shoestring budgets.

Big picture I see conservatives benefiting a great deal from the rebuild of information and legal networks parallel to those that have been taken over and rendered useless by enemy ideology or by corruption.

If we’re doing music night here’s my contribution… it’s a collection of modern Japanese songs packed full of positive energy. Ironically the Japanese seem to be the only people advancing Western culture anymore, what with the West descending into barbarianism and all. Jazz, blues, classical, rock… all these things are still alive and developing in Japan despite being dead here.

I’d be awfully interested in what this sounds like to a pair of fresh ears – I’ve listened to these hundreds of times already and still enjoy it – so if you give it a listen let me know what you think.

Diego Maximo Pujol is a modern Argentine guitarist and composer. His pieces are particularly “guitarry” sounding (no great surprise since Pujol is a performer himself) in that they generally exploit the full melodic range of the classical guitar. They are often surprisingly easier to play than they sound, yet always have distinctive lyrical charm.

    Happy Cursday Treepers!

Although it’s still hot enough here to seem like Fall weather is a distant dream, it is early October and so, emotionally if not intellectually, I can kinda-sorta convince myself that real Fall coolness can’t be all that far away. Can it? Anyway, since this is now officially Fall I think it might be good to share a passage from one of my favorite warm fireplace books. Surely it’s cold enough for a Treeper somewhere, someplace to have a warm fire going. Shoot, maybe you’re even getting some snow . . .

From “Home Waters” by Joseph Monninger

I took Nellie on a last walk before we went to bed. We walked down the paved road that fronted the motel, then I let her go to investigate a patch of grass. She was lazy and docile, tired from a day wading in the water. A few snowflakes began to fall. When she came back to me, I put her on the leash again and waited awhile in the darkness. You could see a long way. Snowflakes pulled each other down out the sky like white spiders softly dipping onto grass.

A U.S. Air Force C-5M Super Galaxy lands at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton on October 2, 2019. The C-5M is capable of embarking almost any piece of Marine Corps combat equipment and delivering it to any location in the world.

How does the C-5 compare to a 747?
Since the C5 is 75.33 meters long vs. the 747 being 76.3 meters, and the C5 has a 67.9 meters wingspan vs. the 747 at 68.5 meters, the C5 is only very slightly smaller than the 747.

“This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” Mark ix. 29

“Why could not we cast him out?” The answer lies in a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. This kind can come forth by nothing but by concentration and redoubled concentration on Him. We can ever remain powerless, as were the disciples, by trying to do God’s work not in concentration on His power, but by ideas drawn from our own temperament. We slander God by our very eagerness to work for Him without knowing Him.

You are brought face to face with a difficult case and nothing happens externally, and yet you know that emancipation will be given because you are concentrated on Jesus Christ. This is your line of service – to see that there is nothing between Jesus and yourself. Is there? If there is, you must get through it, not by ignoring it in irritation, or by mounting up, but by facing it and getting through it into the presence of Jesus Christ, then that very thing, and all you have been through in connection with it, will glorify Jesus Christ in a way you will never know till you see Him face to face.

We must be able to mount up with wings as eagles; but we must also know how to come down. The power of the saint lies in the coming down and the living down. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,” said Paul, and the things he referred to were mostly humiliating things. It is in our power to refuse to be humiliated and to say – “No, thank you, I much prefer to be on the mountain top with God.” Can I face things as they actually are in the light of the reality of Jesus Christ, or do things as they are efface altogether my faith in Him, and put me into a panic?

There are so many music lovers on this thread, I think it’s worth sharing some novel animated infographics of classical music. (For Edward Tufte fans like me, the proper term is “data visualization” but, no matter.)

Over the years, friends who work in various areas of design have insisted that playing Mozart in the background gives them a continuously renewing sense of mental freshness as they put in very long hours at their computers. Now I know what they mean! I am working with a Denver-based designer to put together, first, a somewhat complex website for a client, then he will do a simpler one for my consulting work. This involves marathon sessions of photoshopping, text editing. and other equally mind-numbing tasks– in real time– while web conferencing. Youtube has a ton of these Mozart visualizations and they really are great for folks stuck at their computers for long stretches!

There’s just something inherently funny about watching an aging, chunky MMA fighter stride right up to a supposed martial arts master and proceed to beat the absolute hell out of him”
