Tuesday December 11th – Open Thread

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

    “The world passeth away” (1 John 2:17).

    “The whole world lieth in wickedness (1 John 5:19).

    Christians who spend their time and energy in social service, civic reform, programs for the uplift of the community, etc., forget that this world is like a sinking ship. They are wasting their time and energy trying to save the wreck instead of saving individuals from the wreck.

    Paul lived in a day when politics were corrupt, when power trampled righteousness under foot, when society was degraded, when purety was laughed at, and immorality was exalted. He saw what was called “art and culture” dragging thousands down as it tempted them from statues that almost lived, and from writings and pictures so vile that they were only surpassed by the actual immorality from Nero’s court down.

    Yet you never find him taking part in political campaigns, nor urging social reform. His great aim was to present the Lord Jesus Christ as the One to whom individuals must fly for salvation.

    By Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

    1John 2:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

    1John 5:19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

        “Why not do both?”

        I do personally. These short articles were originally published in a brief newspaper column. This (I believe) was written to counter the notion that the church had to work to reform society (instead of placing the emphasis on redeeming the individuals in that society). Especially errors such as “if we worked hard enough, we will get the Kingdom, etc.”

        The fault for the decay in society today can be laid at the professing local churches that abandoned our inner cities for the suburbs, a trend that started in the 1950’s. Our small local church held out until two years ago, when rent at the local community center on a major bus line in the city of Buffalo became prohibitive.

        For the 10 years prior to this at this location, we NEVER had a single individual walk in from the street, despite having a large sign placed outside when we met on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. We may have had one or two when we were at a location down the street for nearly 10 years before that,

        I am not in the picture, because I took it.

      Ephesians 2:1 ¶ And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
      2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
      3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

      2Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
      4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

      1Timothy 2:1 ¶ I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
      2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
      3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

      4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
      5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

      Titus 3:1 ¶ Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
      2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
      3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

      4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
      5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
      6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

      7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
      8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

      Love it. Thanks. I believe that the purpose of life after salvation by faith alone in Christ alone, is to “grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord, Jesus Christ.” The means of growing in grace is found in the study and teaching of God’s Word. Our Christian “works” are the result of spiritual growth not the “means”. Those works such as effective prayer, worship, social good, giving, etc. come “naturally” to the spiritually, mature Christian. God revealed his will, plan and purpose to the world through His Word, the mind of Christ! Works of the natural man (unbeliever), simply wood, hay and stubble 1Cor 3:12, to be burned and the judgment seat of Christ. This message: foolishness to the natural man for only those with the filling of the Holy Spirit can understand it. Those without a relationship through faith are without hope, without eternal life and without Jesus. A tragedy worse than any corruption or criminality we read about here at CTH.

        “When the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage, there were no great protests from social conservatives. What is curious, however, is how social liberals turned on a dime to take up transgender rights.

        “After their victory, they immediately took up the cause of a vanishingly tiny number of Americans, the better to blame their opponents. In the permanent cultural wars against conservatives, there’s always one more river to cross.”

        That small number, I think I just saw in print yesterday, is about 0.6 percent of Americans. Or maybe it was 0.06 percent, I forget.

          Moral outrage is key ingredient in their Alinskyite playbook. Always have an issue, a crisis, anything to keep people angry, enraged, and engaged. It’s been very effective, but I doubt they’ve thought things through to an ultimate conclusion, or perhaps they have but are utterly delusional about the potential consequences of their actions.

            Problems that would be caused by accepting transgenders in society was discussed more than 30 years ago. The questions of what would happen when a transgender’s male body was put into women’s sports was discussed back then. Nothing has changed to fix the problem. Women’s rights are being trampled on as we speak. The left’s agendas are colliding all over the place.

    Why ‘No Hate Here’ signs are actually pretty hateful

    “There was a moment, shortly after the 2016 election, when liberals realized that ordinary Americans had turned against them, and that they had reason to do so.

    “Allied to the teachers unions, the liberals had permitted our schools to descend to Third World standards. They supported an immigration system that imported economic immobility. They welcomed a regulatory morass that gave elites jobs but that placed a stumbling block in the path of those who sought to get ahead.

    Martini-swilling spy James Bond is a ‘severe’ alcoholic, study says

    He’s blowing well over a 0.07.

    Martini-loving spy James Bond has a severe drinking problem and should seek help, researchers argue in a new paper titled “License to Swill.”

    “There is strong and consistent evidence that James Bond has a chronic alcohol consumption problem at the ‘severe’ end of the spectrum,” wrote the researchers

    When he drinks, Bond engages in risky behavior like having sex with enemies — “sometimes with guns or knives in the bed,” researchers wrote in the study.

    He’s also prone to brawls, car chases, high-stakes gambling and operating complex machinery — like the nuclear technology in 1962’s “Dr. No,” they found.

    Parisian Riots : A Symptom Of Western Problems, Not A Cause

    Dec 10, 2018

    on the surface, the Yellow Vest protests have pinned the blame on increased gas/ fuel taxes…

    …but is that too simplistic ?

    article does an excellent job of explaining the root cause as being : the “lack of assimilation by waves of often hostile immigrants…”

    combined with decreasing birth rates in the host nation(s)….(which, incidentally can ultimately impact the work force demographic)…

    “As French ghettos of unassimilated immigrants grow larger, so, too, does the drag on the culture and the economy of the nation…They collect absurdly generous taxpayer benefits” that undermine the host country….

    “The rural and middle class French workers perceive their country to be falling victim to the predations of violent “asylum seekers”

    as their paychecks dwindle & standard of living dwindles due to shrinking wages/higher taxes to
    support hostile immigrants .

    more, in the article.

    no one’s talking much about this aspect of the Paris protests-turned-riots…and all thru Europe…as it relates to these expanding protests.

    but it’s the reality.

    and Paris is like the canary in the coal mine.

My headphones, Senneheiser, HD 280 pro, were purchased more than 15+ years ago from Amazon (doesn’t even show up in my “purchases” list. Anyway, my son wanted to buy me a new set ($100+) for Christmas, I told him, “no”, I just wanted the ear pad replacements for $25+ (mine are really ragged). Problem is getting them to stretch to fit in the crevasse surrounding the ear phones – not been successful. Any ideas?

        and s/b “Sennheiser” Batting 100 here! 🙁

        Janie..I have the Senneheiser 120’s. On your’s can you twist off where the foam part goes? Mine is a plastic piece with foam then you can replace the outer foam (that actually touches your ears. (On one of the ears, is where the rechargeable batteries go- behind this twist off piece.)

          Use you hand…laying flat against the ear foam and see if it will twist off.

        • Janie M. says:

          No, BigMama, can’t twist it off. BUT… I watched a Sennheiser tech on YT earlier (after D_I’s suggestion) replace the ear pads on the same model as mine. Of course, he did it in 5 mins. WELL… I just finished putting on the new ear pads! YAY!! There is a “skirt” on the pad which you have to tuck into the crevice on the headset with your finger nail which anchors the pad. I just cut my nails short a few days ago, so it was a bit of a problem – my right thumb nail is sore now. 😄 Anyway, I’d get the top part in, pull the pad to insert the bottom skirt and the top would pull out. This better last me another 15 years. I’m not doing this again!

          This is what my headphones look like, except I don’t have those 2 cushions on the top head piece.

      “Any ideas?”

      I have plastic Sennheisers from the mid-1970’s, so I cannot help you there. They look like flimsy junk, but are fabulous. Mine are due for new foam. I read about your predicament many years ago, but do not remember what the solution was.

      1) Check out websites for “Stereophile” and “The Absolute Sound” to see if there are any readers forums.

      2) Do a YouTube search. They have millions of how-to videos. Except for the safe reloading of ammunition, which they recently banned.

      3) Find the owner’s manual on-line.

        Thank you, D_I! They’re old but I love my headphones (can wear them for hours w/no discomfort) and there has only been a minor external change in design – now has 2 foam cushions on the inside of the head frame.

      • Janie M. says:

        D_I, took your suggestion and went to YT. A Sennheiser tech showed how to install the ear pad. He did it lickety-split… took me much longer but it it done!!! Thank you for your suggestion, I was losing my mind and having major regrets about not taking the new headset.

    There is a three-part interview on YT with an Orthodox Christian iconographer.

    The part that I will try to upload is titled Iconography | Iconoclasm.

    This part has an excellent historical, theological, and artistic summary about the Church’s use of Holy Icons since the earthly days of the Lord and His Twelve Apostles and the victory of the Church over the heresy of iconoclasm.

    The Holy Martyr Stephen the New is mentioned in the video and today (November 28th on the Church Calendar) he is commemorated.

    The link is below and the YT user is California Pilgrim.

      Sepp, THANK YOU! We’ll be watching these tonight!

      Here’s an amazing bit about the Nativity Icon:

      “There is no ass or ox in the Biblical narratives of the birth of Christ. Yet, besides the Christ Child himself, the ass and the ox are the most ancient and stable elements in the iconography of the nativity. In fact the earliest example of a nativity known to us contains only the swaddled Christ in the manger flanked by the ox at his head and the ass at his feet.”

      …”the inclusion of this detail is a reference to the prophecy of Isaiah:

      “The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: but Israel has not known me, and my people have not understood.”

      and also: “Habakkuk the prophet, saying, “Between two animals you are made manifest.”

      There is stuff at the link that goes much much deeper (as we Orthodox are wont to do, lol!) I hope you enjoy the article:

    senate tee-vee just wound up for the night. Ugh! They’ll be back tomorrow morning at 9:30amEST.

    The senate scheduled a vote for SJRes 64 for tomorrow at 12:15pmEst – SJRes 64 , sponsored by Jon Tester….who wants to………

    ” This joint resolution nullifies a Department of the Treasury rule (Rev. Proc. 2018-38) that modifies the requirements for information returns filed by certain tax-exempt organizations…….

    Just watched a piece on the news about how a station in San Francisco that was playing Christmas carols removed the classic ‘Bay It’s Cold Outside’ from its playlist due to listener complaints that it promoted rape culture. That’s right folks, the male singer was denying the female co-singer (who was trying to escape his testosterone driven unwelcome advances) the ability to freely leave.
    Are sae outta our $%#@& minds?

    Senate-tee-vee also passed the Farm bill today. The vote was for the Conference Report that goes along with HR 2, which is the Farm bill (which is for a 5 year bill !)
    Y- 87 – N – 13.

    Here are the no’s: Barrasso (R-WY) Cotton (R-AR) Enzi (R-WY) Flake (R-AZ) Grassley (R-IA)
    Johnson (R-WI) Kennedy (R-LA) Kyl (R-AZ) Lee (R-UT) Murkowski (R-AK) Paul (R-KY)
    Rubio (R-FL) Toomey (R-PA)

    This afternoon, some time after the vote….Grassley took to the floor, and was flat-out mad regarding the Farm bill. He stated that it gives handouts to BIG FARMS, and no longer serves it’s original mission, which was a safety net for small farms, and young farmers getting started, but that some in the senate followed lobbyists for handouts, and never took into consideration the Taxpayer………and that’s why he (Grassley) voted no.
