Knowing that Marine La Pen was going to Trump Tower, every spook in NY was monitoring what was going on. The last thing anybody would have done is use a cell phone. She was in a building owned by Trump with employees all working for Trump…there are just other ways to communicate. It could have been something as simple as what chair she sat in or what she ordered or her just showing up could have been a prearranged message. Trump knows that the intelligence community is against him so he knows everything is being monitored. She sent our President a message under the noses of all the spooks and reporters in NY.

There are plenty of French troops and French officers lead the Foreign Legion. It was part of the effort, particularly the ground advance. We’ve meet quite a few French military and their families over the years in Africa. Overall, they are very impressive – not showy, but thoughtful, informed and diligent.

This begs the question of how US troops compare. The US military has been really degraded. Many honest, hard-working Americans join, but it’s a discouraging mess, rewarding nonsense and punishing quality. It’s a miracle there’re US soldiers and officers still trying to excel and do the right thing despite all the infuriating blocks, discriminatory advancement priorities, shallow computer-based training, forced idling and vapid busywork done to them.

Howie posted a clip from the movie below – “The Hunt for Red October”. One of Sean Connery’s best non-Bond films.

To setup the clip, the Americans have determined that the captain of the Russian sub (Connery) wants to defect with the sub. The captain of the American sub sends Morse code and asks the Russian to confirm this hunch with a single sonar ping. It gives the unsuspecting crew the impression he is doing one thing, when in fact he is doing another.

I am not 100% sure, but I think SD is saying the LePen visit seems innocent enough, but actually sends a very clear message of her intent – if you know what you are looking for.

Lots of places to have lunch in Manhattan, but she chose Trump Tower. Maybe she likes the atmosphere better there?

Point being, and the French (as true with the other EU “Deplorables”) see an example of what they might achieve for their countries.

My god, there’s another one of me, Mope! Spring of 1969 in my case, when I watched the last original Star Trek episode, and that was it.
I suppose that’s not technically QUITE true, for there was the set I kept in a closet–quite literally–after my dear mother-in-law the fellow opera nut was injured at work and I moved her and her husband into my house for the three years until she could get her disability in 1981 and be independent again, I hauled it out Saturday mornings so she and I could watch “Live From The Met,” but that WAS it… I haven’t had cable or a TV set since if you don’t count the few I had to watch old movies on VCR or Laserdisc.
You know, for most of my life, people didn’t believe me when I said I didn’t watch television, but the last few years, I notice more and more of us… it gives me hope.

I would get so mad at sit-coms it was unhealthy. I didn’t find a lot of it funny and they would put their laugh-track in I would get agitated. It was like they were telling me when to laugh. Well if it was funny I would know when to laugh.
Then one night I came home from work and put four rib-eyes in the broiler turned on the tube and fell asleep. Needless to say I woke up at 1 am with a house full of smoke. The next day it went out to the curb, I put a sign on it that it worked and it was go in fifteen minutes
A couple years later some poor lady was cold calling for cable subscriptions and rang my bell. “At this time I would like to offer you 3 free months… blah, blah…” I flung the door open and said “Lady, do you see a TV in this house?” She backed away from the door slowly saying “OMG..”

Clancy is a big name, but he is a jerk.

He couldn’t get anyone to publish HfRO until the Naval Institute Press to a gamble on it because of the submarine relationship. They thought they were going to actually make a profit once it was a success and Clancy came out with a new novel. But Clancy double crossed them, abandoned the folks that made him rich by going to a big name publisher.

So after he was famous he decided to divorce his wife, who just inserted a share of th royalties for future Jack Ryan novels in the settlement. Net effect, Jack Ryan is an abandoned character, never to see the printed page again.

And this author makes a big point about Honor.

This alliance will kill them? The French are like the crazed arsonist all over ME and NA spreading ISIS with their bombing without a strategy or sufficient military. Libya, Syria, Iraq, Mali, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, wherever, they botch the job. North Africa, West Africa. Like a French flu.

Time for a plan, a strategy.

This is why the Russians are so much more effective. They know how to fight a war.
Libyan factions are trying to get Russia and Egypt to help clean up that nightmare.
Sarkozy and Clinton blew up Libya, Obama and NATO keep blasting at it but had no strategy or plan for success.

The help France needs is inside France. NATO, if it has any use, must be trained for urban warfare, lightning fast deployments, and disruption of terror networks. If that’s what LePen and Trump come up with, it will have a good effect and probability of success.

Europe is going to ablaze soon with urban terror. Western leaders need to face up to the mess they have created.

Hard to argue with a lazy time-worn stereotype.
French troops fight very well. They are stationed in Africa so they know the people and conditions first hand. Meanwhile, to the US national shame and detriment, ISIS drives around in abandoned US military equipment left behind by US forces ordered to retreat.

US African command sits comfortably and remotely in Germany and the US military considers Djibouti and Dubai to be ‘Africa’ even though those countries have a thousand execrable years of slaving of sub-Saharan Africa as their history. So, Africans aren’t all that trusting of those countries or of anyone doing business with them.

          Monsieur Bleu,

Address, s’il vous plait, the fact that France has no strategy, in France or outside in its old colonial world to defeat ISIS/AQ.

Certainly, its elite soldiers are some of the best of the world. They were very effective in the 80’s against Gaddafi in Chad, just as they have done fairly well in Mali, though have failed in strategic terms to limit chaos. Seems as NATO doctrine, à la U.S., the goal is just make war, produce chaos, but victory is not on the agenda.

Except it is the agenda of the enemies of civilization.

It is very sad—because I love France, French language, French cinema, French literature, French architecture, and French wine—to see the great nation being devolved into cultural suicide while accomplishing nothing in its foreign policy.

My comments spoke to that catastrophe, not it’s ground troops.

There, what you just said is more fair. It doesn’t include the machinations of other players that work against the French in these theaters. The French asked the US for logistical help from the US and even though the during the same period, the US was leaving behind millions of dollars worth of US equipment for ISIS to take, somehow it couldn’t find much in the cupboard to help the French military to retake and secure Mali.

Yes, there are problems in political priorities, the squabbling, delays and indecision of the UN emboldened the Islamists to surge to capture the capital, forcing France to act. No one expected the French could mobilize and hit the ground like that or fight in such extreme conditions – low tech boots on the ground in 130 F heat.
