Secretary John Kerry Recovering – First Picture Since Injury…

On Sunday May 31st Secretary of State John Kerry was in a bicycling accident.  It was reported he broke his femur (upper leg bone).  Today the first picture of him, since injury, surfaces via Twitter.

No cast or brace? I don’t believe that’s a broken femur. Look how “tiny” his ankle bone on that leg looks.

Agree about the lack of cast for a broken femur, but the tiny ankle is probably just the leg sunk into the pillow. He’s still an effeminate traitor. Kinda like Teh Won.

June 9th to May 31st? Nine days, Kerry’s likely not feeling a thing. Days one and two are tough, day nine not so much
First Secretary of State falls down and has a concussion, disabled for 3 months or so.
Second Secretary of State unable to keep himself erect on bicycle, an act any ordinary eight year old American child masters easily. Something unique to the Obama personnel selection policy or a warning from on high?

I recall full leg casts for a broken femur.
The clown in that pic does not look like he recently sustained a broken femur.

If it was a complete break, I imagine he would have a post, plates and screws in that leg, plus a cast. It seems unlikely that he would have broken the femur just by falling off a bicycle. He must have been traveling at high speed and been flung off the bike with force. Or else he has osteoporosis.

      Some observations:

      a) A femur fracture can be the same thing as a hip fracture. If the break occurs high up on the femur (at the thin point just below the “ball” in the “ball & socket” of the hip — by far the most common place to break it in a fall by an elderly person), many professionals would casually refer to that as a hip fracture. It would technically be a right intertrochanteric femur fracture.

      b) If a person has hip surgery and everything is going normally, there is no reason for a cast (or even a brace) to be there status-post hip surgery. The fixation has already been done internally, surgically with metal hardware. One week out, there would be an incision, stapled shut, maybe with gauze dressings taped over it. He is likely cleared to bear weight on it to his tolerance (unless something else is going on, see point c) below). Traditional casts are for non-operative management of fractures that can be set (reduced) without opening somebody up, particularly used on non-compliant patients, rough-and-tumble kids, etc.

      c) Kerry reportedly had a pre-existing hip replacement on that leg. Depending on the severity of the injury, that could greatly complicate the repair and recovery, as a fracture around a joint replacement tends to be ugly (the metal implant doesn’t break, the bone around it does, and often in multiple pieces). It’s also possible that the presence of a metal implant caused the fracture to occur lower along the femur than one might otherwise expect in such a fall.

      d) That’s definitely a hospital room (or for the conspiracy theorists, all the right props are in place). The mini tissue box, the green pad under the pillow, the tray table, and that style of vinyl-covered blue couch are all standard hospital-issue items. One of the nicer hospital rooms I’ve seen. What a view!

      e) If he is indeed in a regular hospital, the type that us commoners have access to as well, then that appears to be the ubiquitous, generic white hospital phone that’s up to his ear. This bit of Harf twitter propaganda is trying to suggest that the hard work never stops — well I hope he’s not conducting State business on the hospital phone! And if they attempt to say they went in and installed a secure line, would you not want to replace the handset too, lest it have been bugged to send everything to China, prior to arrival? Then again, I’m probably naive for thinking that State even cares about such petty things as national security any more.

And why did we send a KC-17 over from Germany (Charleston based) to pick him up and take him to Boston? The way they made it seem he’d likely never walk again without a cane.

Poor John, no one sent him flowers or balloons. Good chat w/Ambassador Rice? The way the media portrayed his accident I thought he would have had his leg in traction, or rods poking out his leg, or a cast, anything? Well at least he can use his bad leg as his desk.

Note how they position the table and can to hide his leg. Why?

  6. Jett Black says:

No way that’s a broken femur, unless it was the most minor hairline fracture possible. A real femur break gets a spica cast–i.e., full leg + up to the waist, with the essential “voiding” parts open. Kids get those fractures, usually from twisting motions while that big bone is still solidifying. For Kerry to break his giant, Lurch femur, he’d have had to sustained some very significant force or have some very weak bones. From the look of things it’s the latter and it’s consistent with the condition of his brain, ethics, and patriotism–all very very weak.

Apparently, Kerry had a hip replacement on that side several years ago. His “fractured femur” is probably more of a hip fracture, and the surgery would have been similar to a re-do after a fracture below a hip prosthesis. No cast – there are probably nails or other internal fixators in place.

One of the bloggers at Ace’s place the other day pointed out how odd it was, however, that NO pictures of the accident and emergency treatment seem to have surfaced. How unlikely is that? The guy is such a narcissist that he rides with a whole entourage, and there must be the odd reporter or papparazzo tagging along as well. If the accident happened as stated, why no pictures until now? It’s just odd.

If a “re-do” of hip related surgery, how likely is it to be wearing pants already?

      • The Tundra PA says:

Agree, bofh, likely a hip fracture or complication of the prostheses. I have them on both sides, and have dislocated more times than I want to remember.

whupt, yes, he’d be wearing hospital scrub pants by now, which is what he appears to have on.

I agree, it seems very strange that no pictures have surfaced…if the injury occurred as claimed.

Having had a broken femur, that does not appear to be proper medical protocol. Normally, a cast is placed one joint above the break and all the way down. Which means you would normally be in a body cast. Maybe things have changed, but somethin’ smells hinky here. 🙄

Just as long as he can climb those steps on another plane trip to try and convince other countries the Obama (cough) has their best interests to heart. Kerry gets paid to urinate in the wind and never complains.

The unspoken theory is Kerry got lucky from an botched assissination attempt from a group out to kill a traitor. Or a Secret Service agent threw a stick in the yacht owner and tax evader’s front spoke.

If you zoom way in, you can see his pajama leg smooths out from just below his knee, and on up. Some sort on new thin cast? I don’t know. He’s a wart!

I think he injured something else. Those bicycle seat injuries can be pretty nasty. 😬

  20. texan59 says:

Here’s my stoopid question of the day. Why is he talking on what appears to be the room phone from the hospital whilst talking to someone important, since he’s looking through some top-secret hoodoo voodoo file. His super-duper Blackberry that is connected to Hillz email server is sitting on the table. 🙄

Er… hinky is right. Not a bed he’s sitting in… that’s a chair or my name ain’t late-for-breakfast. How does someone with a fractured femur sit in a recliner chair? Just wondering? Never broke my leg, only ripped ligaments in my knee and broke my foot… both left me pretty immobilized I have to tell you. Even 9 days out and fairly young at the time. And.. if his leg is broken, why is he working on it? I know papers don’t weigh a lot.. but still… why not roll that work-table over and work on that? Oh, I know… we wanna show off that leg? Is that it? I’m sorry – looks staged… fake. It ain’t right. That’s all I know.

When I was 12 I had broken right wrist for 2 weeks before going to the hospital. They had to set it, put a cast on it, and I was at school the next day. Before that I was trying to play basketball and ride my bike.
Surgery on my ankle and I was crutching/hopping around the gym within 2 weeks.

Now I know this dudes old but I’m not some kind of Spartan and I also never had any nuclear treaties to negotiate so I have to ask-

Is there more to this story or is this guy really that big of a pussy?

  25. cajunkelly says:

Could a propaganda picture be more staged? Something is very hinky about this entire story.

  26. cajunkelly says:

Hardwood floors in a hospital room? A hospital room with a spectacular view? With an assistant to stage his photo ops perfectly, right down to the dainty little box of tissues with one tissue strategically hanging out of the box just so. Ahhhh the life and times of the upper echelon.

My utter contempt meter just pegged the needle.

  27. shipley130 says:

Couldn’t handle anymore yelling from the Iranian foreign minister so he “broke” his leg. Tissues to wipe his brow when he wakes up from his PTSD nightmares. LOL.

  28. CrankyinAZ says:

I think it’s nice he had his briefcase right there… just out of reach – but right in view of the camera. Nice touch! LOL Though, I still think it funny they forgot the flowers… no love for Lurch. 😦

  29. Lina says:

Not buying it, he wouldn’t have his legs in those positions either way (femur or hip version of story) and this appears to be a younger pic of him, maybe when he was waiting in the hospital room PRIOR to his previous hip operation. His skin is heavier especially in the chin and more flappier in recent photos on his bike…
