Sunday Open Thread – March 9th

Tomb of the UnknownOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. THY WILL BE DONE, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but DELIVER US FROM EVIL.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen †

Putin the High Stakes Poker Player

In an interview on Russian media, Putin says that Russian forces will put women and children in front of them as a barrier between Russian forces and any Ukrainian / anti-Russian forces:
(this translation c/o Front Page Magazine)

The only reason this has gotten this far is because Putin knows Obama will not call his bluff.

Listen to me. Listen to me carefully. I want you to correctly understand me.

If we reach that decision, only if we reach that decision, it will only be for the defense of Ukrainian citizens, let anyone from the military dare shoot at their own people which we will be behind, not in front but behind, let them try and shoot at women and children.

Let me see who in the Ukraine will give such an order.

I think Putin could easily end up as the big loser in this. If Russia just gets the Crimea then that means it loses the rest of Ukraine. And if the Ukrainian economy starts to grow then other countries and regions in the Russian orbit could get ideas that they are better off free from Russia. And with Russia setting the precedent of a region like Crimea “voting” to leave Ukraine then how do you argue against parts of, say, Moldova deciding to secede and merge with an EU country it borders with?

Sheriff Clarke touts gun rights at national conservatives’ conference

This isn’t a new stance for Clarke or the first he’s publicly expressed support for the Second Amendment. Previously, he urged citizens to arm themselves because the police couldn’t always be expected to arrive in time to prevent a crime. He’s a very controversial Sheriff, and some say these types of statements are campaigning with an eye on political office. Personally, I like a law enforcement representative going public and I hope Sheriff Clarke says what he means and means what he says.

Death with Dignity and other wordsmithing will be used to soften the push for euthanasia for terminally and elderly. This failed Quebec bill included handicapped. Her younger brother had been mildly handicapped by polio. Euthanasia is a slippery slope from ending true suffering to pure euthanasia. I like Dick Cheney a lot. But I think he is all wrong with what he was just saying on Face the Nation with Charlie Rose. He said the US should be moving weapons into Poland, the Baltic states and even Western Ukraine. He emphasized that an attack on NATO countries like Poland and the Baltics is an attack on us all.
Why does NATO even exist anymore? It obligates the US to go to war with Russia if it moves troops into Latvia? This border war with Russia and Europe is going to come down to the economic system both sides have to offer. Russia loses that fight. The US should arm its friends. And encourage US investment. But I think that is about it.

So, I’m wondering this morning if there’s a linguistic connection between “whisk” and “whiskey” and come across this example sentence at http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/whisky:

So, I wonder, can I take this guy seriousy? Who is he, anyway? I find out via web search that he was a bisexual drug addicted luminary of “The Beat Generation”, an author whose work was the last to make it to the high courts for obscenity of word, with no pictures.

Yeah, like I’m going to take his word on the meaning of truth.

BTW, “whisk” derives from straw used to make a broom, and the actions of a broom; “whiskey” derives from Gaelic ‘ uisge beatha “whisky,” lit. “water of life,” from O.Ir. uisce “water” + bethu “life.” The Gaelic is probably a loan-translation of M.L. aqua vitae, which had been applied to intoxicating drinks since early 14c.’

The β€œdiversity” of people applying for police positions is amazing–and disquieting. Some have no idea that when applying for a job requiring enormous maturity, responsibility and personal integrity, it would be wise to shave, remove all piercings, bathe, and dress in clean and pressed clothing…

Many people try to become police officers because of the romance and authority of the job. Unfortunately, their view of police work is usually drawn from TV and the movies; it has nothing to do with reality…

One recent development that worries many informed observers is the video game warrior. Many of the current crop of police officers have been raised with shoot-β€˜em-up video games… I fear that too many contemporary cops have been conditioned to shoot first and always, and sort things out later, and there are an amazing and disturbing number of incidents that reinforce that fear…

The biggest stumbling block to excellence in police work is that agencies are limited to hiring members of the human race. This always means that some will be fundamentally unfit for the job. Most will be average, and some few will be excellent. Citizens will never know which of these they’ll meet when they’re pulled over, or when an officer comes to their door to take a report…

Remember that officers are expected to make absolutely correct judgments under incredible stresses and to take flawless actions, all of which will be analyzed months later by people with unlimited time in the safety and security of their office chairs. Amazingly, they mostly succeed.
