In response to Governor Rick Perry’s statement that one of the reasons he is running for President is to “make sure that every young man and woman who puts on the uniform of the United States respects highly the president of the United States.”, Dan Futrell makes the case that pretty much one any one with a job is “serving” America.
I can sort of see his one point…men and women of the United States Military do respect the President as their Commander in Chief. It’s part of their job. However, I think the argument he presents is weak. No one is questioning the patriotism of teachers, nurses and “community organizers”, but I personally don’t think of them as serving their country in the same way as the members of the Armed Forces. For example, when was the last time you heard of a social worker taking the following oath?
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

One of these things is not like the other.
This piece is a real stretch to take umbrage at Governor Perry’s statement.
