The Harrowing of Hell

From an unknown Russian icon painter

From an ancient homily for Holy Saturday.

What is happening? Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has trembled.

Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and Adam’s son. (more…)

Good Friday Reproaches

Good Friday

Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron valley
to where there was a garden,
into which he and his disciples entered.
Judas his betrayer also knew the place,
because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.

Do the Little Things

Take a moment to share your successes, small or large. Have you lost a few pounds, managed to find a few moments of time for relaxation and stress relief, or found that you really enjoy those walks you started taking?

We all wish we’d make the big, life altering changes every day, but the facts line up in support of the little things done consistently. Over time they become the habits that we build upon to change our lives.

Among the little things that help, motivation is important. Seeing other people’s successes, sharing our own. And we can always get some good tips and ideas from what works for others as well.

Yoke

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,” take up his cross, and follow me. Matthew 16:24

This is a place to share your spiritual struggles, hopes, and successes as we live out what taking up the cross means.

In Matthew 11, Jesus also says, “For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

I heard a commentary on this from Fr. Mike Schmitz recently. He said we tend to think of ourselves in a single yoke, but a double yoke was more commonly used, and what Jesus was referring to.

When we assume his yoke, we are beside him, laboring side by side with his strength pulling us on.

The Fifth Sunday of Lent

Reading I

Thus says the Lord GOD:
O my people, I will open your graves
and have you rise from them,
and bring you back to the land of Israel.
Then you shall know that I am the LORD,
when I open your graves and have you rise from them,
O my people!
I will put my spirit in you that you may live,
and I will settle you upon your land;
thus you shall know that I am the LORD.
I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.
