13 years ago today my wife and I were standing at the side of the road in front of our home waiting for transportation. It was just past 8am. She yelled out EARTHQUAKE but I didn’t feel it at first. Then the ground started swaying.

A couple of seconds later it really took off. The ground was jerking side to side and we got to our gate and held on. Neither of us had been in anything like this. The sound of things falling and collapsing was everywhere.

34 seconds later it stopped but it still felt like things were moving. People had moved up to the road. Many were crying. After checking on then we went back inside. Fortunately our house escaped serious damage. Lots of broken items though. Aftershocks were constant.

This was a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that was shallow and we were just 20 km from the epicenter. Amazingly the cellular network was still up so we checked on others. The town had suffered serious damage including the collapse of the only grocery store among many other structures. I took stock of our food and water and planned on a long survival period.

Unfortunately a storm was brewing in the Pacific that became super typhoon Haiyan which hit three weeks later. We were able to survive thanks to God’s blessings and the resilience of people willing to help. Power was finally restored in December, just in time for Christmas.

On Saturday I turn 80 (double-40, as I call it). And with it, I’m signing off CTH (there is another DD on the site; he’s newer!).

My declining health and the demand of full-time caring for my dementia-burdened wife have made it plain to me that I’m running out of gas for contributing to CTH in a proper way.  It’s always been difficult with the time difference of living on the West Coast to comment in any kind of timely way. Finding any time now is a struggle; and, reading is increasingly a challenge. When I was a college student, I vowed to read all 2,000,000 books in the U of Washington Library. For the next 60 years, I’ve tried to keep up the reading pace. I’m still short of my goal, but not for want of trying. Reading on a computer screen has become very tiring (I much prefer books) and the ol’ eyes are failing (Coke bottle bottoms aren’t strong enough); the handwriting on the wall is large enough for me to understand it’s time to stop on my terms before I become the pitiful Henry Bemis figure. Moreover, my ability to retain what I read is suspect; my mind has become like a backpack with no bottom — I toss the info into it but somewhere along the way it drops out. The old stuff is still there, as far as I know; but I’ve been told when you get old you lose three things: your hearing, your eyesight, and…and…you know, I can’t remember the third thing. Additionally, my foreign language fluencies have also deteriorated (German, Russian, other Slavic languages, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, and many more — yes, I once had a disease where languages came naturally to me). I never needed dictionaries by my side before, but now I find myself using them for even the simplest words.

As much as I enjoy reading Sundance’s analyses and sharing comments with fellow Treepers, my darling wife is in need of every minute I can give her to hold her hand, to reassure her that Our Loving Lord is walking with her, and His love for her is eternal. I must express my heartfelt thanks to Sundance, to the CTH crew, and to the wonderful CTH readership for all the patience and kindness you’ve shown me. I count you all as Blessings from God in my life.

DAILY MEDITATION: EPHESIANS 1:1-10 ☘️

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 1:3)
There’s something unique about the Letter to the Ephesians. St. Paul begins most of his letters to other churches by rejoicing in the ways the recipients are living out the gospel. But rather than focus immediately on this particular church, Paul begins by lifting his readers’ eyes to “the heavens” (1:3). From there, he virtually explodes with praise for the God who has poured so many wonderful blessings upon all his people. His combination of joy and awe is so great that it can’t be contained!
Most commentators believe that Paul began Ephesians this way because he intended for his letter to be read in a number of churches around the Roman province of Asia Minor. So he focused on what is true for any church, regardless of their situation. That means he focused on what is true for you as well. So . . .

• If you want to know God’s love more deeply, this letter is for you. It tells you that God loves you enough to give you “every spiritual blessing” (Ephesians 1:3). In fact, he loved you “before the foundation of the world,” before you did anything to earn that love (1:4).
• If you want to encounter his mercy more fully, this letter is for you. You can let Paul show you that God has “lavished” upon you the grace of his forgiveness (Ephesians 1:8). You can encounter the grace that not only forgives you but that raises you up to be with him in heaven (2:4, 6). 
• And if you want to understand God’s plan and purpose for you, this letter is for you. You can let God show you that it is his “will” that you receive “adoption to himself” as his child. And it’s the great “mystery of his will” to bring all things together, including yourself, “in Christ” (Ephesians 1:5, 9-10).

And there is so much more! For the next two weeks, as we hear this letter at Mass, take just one phrase from the reading for that day, and sit with it in prayer. Ask the Lord to fill you with the same joy that Paul knew, the joy of knowing “the riches of his grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

Today is October 15, the first day of the Oct. 15 through Dec. 17 window for people who have original Medicare with a gap plan to go online and check their Plan D to see if it is still what you need. You have to look at the list of plans to see what is now available in your area and if you need to make any changes.

I learned that this is not a set it and forget it thing when my Part D was cancelled and I was dumped onto a more expensive plan. I had to pay a year’s worth of those higher premiums because I had missed the deadline.

A more serious problem is brewing for many people on Medicare Advantage plans. Please listen to this video, it will help you get ahead of the changes and tell you what steps to take if your Advantage plan is being discontinued.

If your plan ends, the silver lining is that you can get on original Medicare with no underwriting, and you must be accepted. Original Medicare is accepted in all 50 states there are no preauthorizations for covered care. You must also get a gap plan to cover the 20 percent, and every Oct 15 you will have to check on your Plan D.

COMMENTARY FOR PSALMS 34

David praises God, and encourages to trust him. (1-10) He exhorts to fear. (11-22)

1-10 If we hope to spend eternity in praising God, it is fit that we should spend much of our time here in this work. He never said to any one, Seek ye me in vain. David’s prayers helped to silence his fears; many besides him have looked unto the Lord by faith and prayer, and it has wonderfully revived and comforted them. When we look to the world, we are perplexed, and at a loss. But on looking to Christ depends our whole salvation, and all things needful thereunto do so also. This poor man, whom no man looked upon with any respect, or looked after with any concern, was yet welcome to the throne of grace; the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The holy angels minister to the saints, and stand for them against the powers of darkness. All the glory be to the Lord of the angels. By taste and sight we both make discoveries, and have enjoyment; Taste and see God’s goodness; take notice of it, and take the comfort of it. He makes all truly blessed that trust in him. As to the things of the other world, they shall have grace sufficient for the support of spiritual life. And as to this life, they shall have what is necessary from the hand of God. Paul had all, and abounded, because he was content, #Php 4:11-18|. Those who trust to themselves, and think their own efforts sufficient for them, shall want; but they shall be fed who trust in the Lord. Those shall not want, who with quietness work, and mind their own business.

11-22 Let young persons set out in life with learning the fear of the Lord, if they desire true comfort here, and eternal happiness hereafter. Those will be most happy who begin the soonest to serve so good a Master. All aim to be happy. Surely this must look further than the present world; for man’s life on earth consists but of few days, and those full of trouble. What man is he that would see the good of that where all bliss is perfect? Alas! few have this good in their thoughts. That religion promises best which creates watchfulness over the heart and over the tongue. It is not enough not to do hurt, we must study to be useful, and to live to some purpose; we must seek peace and pursue it; be willing to deny ourselves a great deal for peace’ sake. It is the constant practice of real believers, when in distress, to cry unto God, and it is their constant comfort that he hears them. The righteous are humbled for sin, and are low in their own eyes. Nothing is more needful to true godliness than a contrite heart, broken off from every self-confidence. In this soil every grace will flourish, and nothing can encourage such a one but the free, rich grace of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The righteous are taken under the special protection of the Lord, yet they have their share of crosses in this world, and there are those that hate them. Both from the mercy of Heaven, and the malice of hell, the afflictions of the righteous must be many. But whatever troubles befal them, shall not hurt their souls, for God keeps them from sinning in troubles. No man is desolate, but he whom God has forsaken.

Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
