Tomorrow, September 29th, the U.S. ban on most Canadian alcohol imports begins. [XO Link]
Last year most Canadian provinces banned U.S. alcohol imports as part of the “Elbow-up” program triggered by Prime Minister Mark Carney in response to U.S. baseline tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos. In early September of this year, the White House and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer responded with an import ban on Canadian alcohol that begins tomorrow.
The Crown Royal brand of Canadian Whiskey will not be impacted as it is shipped in bulk raw liquid to the U.S. where it is bottled, packaged and distributed. Diageo Inc proactively saw something coming in 2025 and shifted its supply chain to avoid the conflict. However, most Canadian brands of alcohol are not as fortunate. [SEE BAN SECTOR LIST]
The Supreme Court ruled last year that while tariffs against products can -under certain conditions- be subjected to congressional approval, but when it comes to trade friction – bans of products outright are legally within the power of the President. This ban on Canadian alcohol will impact approximately $854 million (usd) in imports. (SEE STORY).
It will be interesting to see if any last-minute intervention takes place.

That is because there are links, which malted beverages are at the top of the list. It appears to me that packages (cans and bottles) of beer and ale are banned, but kegs are still allowed.
I can’t think of any Canadian beer I would enjoy a keg of.

do we even really import much alcohol these days? I own a high end cocktail bar in nola metro area. we havent seen much change in drinking levels. We do offer spirit free versions of everything though too. seems people are def cutting back consumption at home. and more expensive bottles of wine just dont move as much as they used to. Wine market in particular seems to be getting hit hardest.

I don’t put much faith in news from axios, CNN or al Jazeera.
Hopefully that will bring the price of gas down in the US.
Right now, Trump needs the people that voted for him, which includes many people who are hurting very badly due to the high gas prices.
If he can show that SOMETHING, ANYTHING is being done to bring down the gas, that would be good.
But if nothing is done, it communicates a “I don’t care” attitude which is not helpful for the midterms.
The price of gas is one thing. But having a New England home heated with #2 home heating fuel (diesel with red dye) is quite another kettle of fish. Filling a 275-gallon oil tank at $5.25/gal is a painful way to keep warm in the New England winter.
It sounds like the IRGS might benefit from some good old Kentucky Bourbon? LOL.

I thought I read, when the world soccer cup was on the people from around the world was here, they basically drank the country dry. I would say with the summer Olympics coming huge orders of alkeyhol have already been delivered and ready for the surge of foreign drinkers, willing to drink the country dry again. As for as canada goes, ban all trade.

Reading this article reminded me of an email I received last week from a Canadian pharmacy. It was appealing to US customers to order more meds before Trump’s administration restricts meds from international locations shipped via USPS. Suddenly they are willing to process up to a 6mo supply, if prescription refills available, but must be done before Oct. 21st (not sure if I have correct date, but in effect late Oct). The email said they’re setting up locations along the border of Canada & northern states so Americans can cross over to pick-up their meds. It encouraged us to complain to congress, Trump, etc.
I was getting Cambia through them. My insurance won’t cover it, period. It costs $135 from this pharmacy & between $600 & $900 at US pharmacies. This Canadian pharmacy should be asking why they get to sell it so cheaply compared to American pharmacies. I’m guessing their American customer base is so large that they are seeing desperate times ahead post Oct. As for me, I still support President Trump 100%. I’m willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary to do God’s will, get our country back on track & defeat the evil.
Honestly, this doesn’t impact me at all. In fact, if Trump allows Irish whiskey to come in tariff-free, that would help me. Now do Scotch, please, Mr. President. But Canadian? Meh.

Has absolutely no impact on me that I can think of. I have found a few grocery items that I like come from Canada so I’ve made a mental note to go without from now on.
NE Ohio has some great maple syrup. We load up when we visit there.

I read last week that Carney wants to replace the 10,300 satellite Starlink network in Canada with the Canadian version, a 156 satellite constellation called “Telsat Lightspeed”, which is funded by American investors and will launch on SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets.
If Canadian it will turn out to be a fraction of the performance at multiples of the cost of Starlink.

When I was there in the 80’s/90’s, Chinese didn’t drink these western liquors.
In Taiwan they gave small bottles of American bourbon or something (not a drinker so can’t remember the exact one but it was brown color), anyway, they were given as gifts to show status .
But nobody ever opened and drank them. Every Living Room that I went into seemed to have one on display tho.
So, for anybody who’s been there more recently, are the Chinese drinking hard liquor from the west now?

Truly disturbing. Recently, a guy in a well known band I know was on a big tour. His father was in hospice care in Canada.
I guess the father was taking too long to cross over, so Canada decided to suicide him. The son had to leave in the midst of the tour to rush back & say his goodbyes. Just awful!
