Last year most Canadian provinces banned U.S. alcohol imports as part of the “Elbow-up” program triggered by Prime Minister Mark Carney in response to U.S. baseline tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos. In early September of this year, the White House and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer responded with an import ban on Canadian alcohol that begins tomorrow.
The Crown Royal brand of Canadian Whiskey will not be impacted as it is shipped in bulk raw liquid to the U.S. where it is bottled, packaged and distributed. Diageo Inc proactively saw something coming in 2025 and shifted its supply chain to avoid the conflict. However, most Canadian brands of alcohol are not as fortunate. [SEE BAN SECTOR LIST]
The Supreme Court ruled last year that while tariffs against products can -under certain conditions- be subjected to congressional approval, but when it comes to trade friction – bans of products outright are legally within the power of the President. This ban on Canadian alcohol will impact approximately $854 million (usd) in imports. (SEE STORY).
It will be interesting to see if any last-minute intervention takes place.
Since my use of alcohol is extremely low, this action will have no affect on me at all.

This is in fact correct and it is one of many reasons that so many restaurants are struggling to stay open! Among my kids, and their friends, all 30 somethings, there are several who do not drink at all and those who do usually only imbibe on “special occasions”.
The days of the three martini lunch in the corporate world ended quite a while ago but now, it seems like the “wine moms” are about the only ones keeping much of the industry going!
Even less so amongst the 20-somethings. I have 4 “utes,” and they are all teetotalers. As are many of their friends. The boys, in particular, are all listening to health podcasts and tracking macros, rather than drinking heavily, as frankly I did at their age. Small sample size, but I believe the trend is real.

The ancient Romans and Greeks used watered-down wine daily, as it was safer to drink than water. They did not know why it was safer, but at some point knew that drinking water (easily contaminated) caused illnesses.
We have a bottle of Ohio wine in the refrigerator: we bought it last year while at a store on Put-In-Bay, the Ohio island in Lake Erie .
We also make Elderberry tincture with vodka (from Kentucky) , but that is a small amount also, since a teaspoon suffices.

ALL GOOD! I’m more or less done with alcohol except for cooking which is quite minor and doesn’t require anything from Canada. Maybe this might produce “the sads” for some, it touches me NOTHING at all at this point. The older I get, the more what I take in matters. It “sucks” to be plain about it but for some reason I’m not missing alcohol AT ALL.

Thankfully, due to a couple of excessive drinking episodes in my teens, I have no desire to drink any alcohol. Hence, the Snow Mexicans can go to Hades.
