Tomorrow, September 29th, the U.S. ban on most Canadian alcohol imports begins. [XO Link]
Last year most Canadian provinces banned U.S. alcohol imports as part of the “Elbow-up” program triggered by Prime Minister Mark Carney in response to U.S. baseline tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos. In early September of this year, the White House and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer responded with an import ban on Canadian alcohol that begins tomorrow.
The Crown Royal brand of Canadian Whiskey will not be impacted as it is shipped in bulk raw liquid to the U.S. where it is bottled, packaged and distributed. Diageo Inc proactively saw something coming in 2025 and shifted its supply chain to avoid the conflict. However, most Canadian brands of alcohol are not as fortunate. [SEE BAN SECTOR LIST]
The Supreme Court ruled last year that while tariffs against products can -under certain conditions- be subjected to congressional approval, but when it comes to trade friction – bans of products outright are legally within the power of the President. This ban on Canadian alcohol will impact approximately $854 million (usd) in imports. (SEE STORY).
It will be interesting to see if any last-minute intervention takes place.
Since my use of alcohol is extremely low, this action will have no affect on me at all.

Many health gurus claim there is some correlation between heavy alcohol use and dementia, and a lot of us seniors are scared of dementia.

This is in fact correct and it is one of many reasons that so many restaurants are struggling to stay open! Among my kids, and their friends, all 30 somethings, there are several who do not drink at all and those who do usually only imbibe on “special occasions”.
The days of the three martini lunch in the corporate world ended quite a while ago but now, it seems like the “wine moms” are about the only ones keeping much of the industry going!
Even less so amongst the 20-somethings. I have 4 “utes,” and they are all teetotalers. As are many of their friends. The boys, in particular, are all listening to health podcasts and tracking macros, rather than drinking heavily, as frankly I did at their age. Small sample size, but I believe the trend is real.

My wife’s sister doesn’t have any kids but she guzzles wine like a champ. My kids call her the “wine aunt.”

My three kids are all adults now, but they still laugh about all the times she would say something particularly dumb, and then I would tell her to “put a cork in it.”

I am noticing that waiters are frowning or grimacing when we don’t order the $14 “well” cocktails, the $18 “call” cocktails or the $75 bottles of wine.
Nothing inflates the bill like alcohol.

I have read the wineries are struggling and some are closing down. My thought on that is everyone and his brother where I lived opened up a winery, supposedly there are AG tax benefits etc. even if you have only one row of grapes and a shack w/a sign. Same w/craft beer makers they are everywhere. Just too many, they all can’t thrive, and they are very expensive.
The one thing I have noted about these places especially wineries, due to the type of people that go and can afford an afternoon of bottles of wine and cheese board you do not get the riff raff and loud noise of a bar or restaurant. It is a whole different culture of people, and most wineries have beautiful scenery so you can get a lovely dose of nature while sipping. The Trump Winery is gorgeous, the wine is terrible though.
If eating in a restaurant the alcohol adds a large sum to the tab, so people are not drinking or keeping it to one beverage. It is crazy that what used to be $5-8 is now $12-15 a drink.
Yes, I have seen several articles lately about wineries closing due to the costs skyrocketing while the profits are declining, especially for those who were specializing in more “trendy” grapes. Merlot was the hot new wine 40 years ago, as was Pinot Noir, but both have fallen out of favor recently evidently.
We have friends that have a small specialty winery that has a very niche market on a Cabernet type port that they market as a dessert wine. It is quite good, but they are now charging between $40 and $60 for most of their bottles and that is just too rich for my blood! It also needs to be consumed fairly quickly but a bottle of wine will easily sit on my counter for a week, at which point, it’s not the same!
At 69 years young I’ve ran the gamut from beer to whiskey to tequila to vodka and finally settled on wine. I still have a beer, an Old Fashioned or a martini rarely but I like wine, mainly reds. I’ve studied them and learned much about the history of same and I always have a glass of water that I drink with my wine just to keep hydrated.
To each his own I say or don’t have any- that’s what I call freedom.
Now about those wineries. Haha! I haven’t visited many but the ones I did/do are in beautiful natural settings but you do have to choose your table wisely. Since I’m a full blown MAGA man I usually listen to the conversations and seek out a spot where the patrons appear more to my liking. (which also applies to restaurants, etc)
I have sat next to the Nancys and Kamalas of the wine world and am lucky not to be in jail for my rebuttals to some of the nonsense that spews from their pie holes, albeit nothing but regurgitated BS from whatever rag or news station they heard it from.
Anywho, I’ve got enough resveratrol in my system to kill the next CHYNA/CIA virus coming down the pike.

True. A friend who owned a restaurant back in the 90’s once told me that good food was the anchor to get people in but alcohol is where all the profit was in the restaurant.

The ancient Romans and Greeks used watered-down wine daily, as it was safer to drink than water. They did not know why it was safer, but at some point knew that drinking water (easily contaminated) caused illnesses.
We have a bottle of Ohio wine in the refrigerator: we bought it last year while at a store on Put-In-Bay, the Ohio island in Lake Erie .
We also make Elderberry tincture with vodka (from Kentucky) , but that is a small amount also, since a teaspoon suffices.

When I looked up the list of the most popular Canadian liquors I only see one I ever drank, Fireball. The cinnamon liquor popular for doing shots in bars and pubs with friends. Overall alcohol consumption has been trending downward in the US for several years now. It looks like most of the Canadian imports are wine, so maybe our domestic vintners will see a little bump in sales because of this.

The question “what would we do without Canada?” is pretty meaningless for the average American. “What would we do without the United States?” is a MUCH BIGGER question for Canadians.

Carney is actually very similar to the IRCG. Neither care how much destruction is inflicted on their own country. They only care about inflicting destruction on President Trump. Both are taking orders from Obama, Kerry and Hillary Clinton.
It’s way past time for someone to give General Carney (of Carney’s Calvary) a couple of tall glasses of Kentucky moonshine, telling him it’s a special new Canadian brand of liquor named Trump’s Demise and he is to ‘down’ it as fast as possible to encourage all ‘elbows up’ Canadians to run out and buy it and stock up on it, and that’ll show that Maga bunch of n’er do wells. (All of this to be videoed (hidden camera) and shown on U-Tube).
(Hmmmm, maybe I’ll just go and start that brand. That sure is a ‘catchy name’ for Canadian elbow uppers).
As a scotch drinker, I did not even know Canada made alcohol.
