During the state banquet tonight, U.S tech leader Tim Cook will meet China’s new tech leader (from Xiaomi). U.S and China innovators will also meet, like OpenAI on the U.S side and BYD autos on the China side.

This is my take on it.
IMHO, my immediate thought about the evening clothes Melania was wearing is that it was unexpected. I like it bery much but I can’t imagine trying to eat and keep the bow clean. Xi’s wife’s outfit was expected and nothing to knock your socks off. I am trying to wait patiently to find out if Melania’s outfit had a hidden message!
From a male viewpoint it looks like a feminine version of a tuxedo to match what the President is wearing.
Melania always wears a designer outfit. This one is not as formal as one might expect but perhaps there is a reason. I’m sure the press will harp on it in the days to come.

China in 2020 was China. China in 2026 is still China. We compete where our interests conflict, trade where our interests overlap, negotiate where we can, and deter where we must.
War? What is it good for?
And if diplomacy with China is realism rather than surrender, maybe we should at least ask why diplomacy becomes morally suspect the moment the country in question is Iran.

pants…Pants?…PANTS !!!!! I can only read this as a deliberate diplomatic snub as in this-even- ain’t-so-important. Additionally, surely not a vote for feminism rather a vote for the ‘modern’, liberated, post Western Civ woman ………. but then, she is !
Not a snub at all, in my opinion. Rather, a more stylistically modern choice (as you pointed out) vs. traditional. Tuxedo-wear for women has been around for decades. The cummerbund makes it absolutely appropriate. Our First Lady and our President make a stunning couple and visually command the room, as they should. Melania has shown great respect for the guests and has given her personal attention to most details, as reported.
The problem with China is that their default behavior in international relations is to lie. Ours is honesty. They think that’s crazy, don’t understand it, don’t respect it, and take advantage of it every chance they get. Any dealings with the Chinese, you have to understand that they are lying.
‘Honor’, keeping country and family ‘honor’ is a high priority – have no doubt.
