I’m actually paranoid about fire out here. Our closest fire department is about 40 minutes away.
I have a few different apps on my phone that track wildfires and I check them (too often!).
Pretty sure we can get dogs and kitties out, but trailering burros especially in a fire is terrifying. I’ve made
arrangements with some nearby ranches for possible help, but…..

If you have a swimming pool or a handy pond, it might be a good idea invest in a fire-pump. One Palisades/LA fire home owner had installed his own high volume fire pump at his swimming pool. He used it to save his house and those of his next door neighbors.

3-1/2 HP Briggs & Stratton (or equivalent) “trash pump” is what you ask for
It’s a gasoline powered water pump you can lift and move with one arm but you’ll need to set it down to let it operate, it’s heavy.
You’ll need an intake hose around 3-inch diameter into the pool and a discharge hose about 2x the diameter of a garden hose, maybe 2-inch diameter … and a spray-stream nozzle at the business end
… and a couple 5-gal cans of gasoline in the garage
… but before refueling, shut off the pump and let it cool so you don’t go up in a fireball if there’s something hot enough to ignite the gas fumes as you’re pouring into the pump fuel tank
If I lived there, that’s what I’d have
I’d also have a full wetsuit and booties, coupla filled scuba tanks and scuba mask to jump in the pool if my property got fully overrun while I’m trying to fight the fire and it gets the best of me
So you can be wetting down your property and as much of your neighbors as you think you can spare the water, and if the fire still overruns you, you can jump in the pool in your scuba outfit and survive until it blows over sufficiently for you to re-emerge
In my life I’ve been a cold-water surfer, have scuba dived around 20 times, and worked a crew handling that kind of trash pump to jet in creosote pilings and bulkheads on the East Coast, so I’m first-hand familiar with all these components

My mother in law. That’s what she called good memories. If ever she was worried about anything or down (we never knew because she gave nothing away), she’d say, “I believe I will have a little mental cocktail now”. When I think of her, it’s always this turn of phrase which makes me smile.

Brings back bittersweet memories of an old Border Collie showing up at the ranch with a big lump on the side of her face. I took her in, named her Lucy, had the vet check her out and kept her fed, comfortable, as pain free as possible, and very much loved. I had her about 1 year before she went to heaven.

I’m reluctant to mention how much I miss a dog’s company. My friends almost always respond with ‘well-dammit-why-don’t-you-just-get-a-dog!’ . . . There’s always something magical when—as your dear old dog showed—a dog chooses you as
‘their’ person. I so miss those gentle Border Collie eyes looking up at me when Sweetie first found me.
I have been chosen quite a few times, actually more than a few times and yes, Border Collies have those beautiful, gentle eyes.
Garrison, if you are meant to get another dog, you will know when. “Tink” chose you I am sure, as you really enjoy her company, and she enjoys yours.

Beau has begun killing the snakes again, if they venture into the fenced yard, which is not a bad thing. I usually have to look for two halves as Beau shakes them so violently, they get torn into two pieces, which is gross and quite disgusting.
Unfortunately though he has become quicker and has killed several squirrels, which is upsetting to me. The squirrels come into the yard to get at the bird seed in the feeders outside my office windows. I do not want to move them, as they are “kitty porn” for the cats. They will sit and watch the birds all day from the windowsill and my desk, when they are not sleeping! Can you believe the cats were a year old on May 15th. Time sure goes by quickly!
I guess I will try to supply the squirrels with their own feeders outside the fence and hope that will be enough to deter them from venturing into the yard.

I have bird feeders for the littles and squirrel food for my little hungry visitors…and dry cat food for the rest. The rest being raccoons, possums. And strangely an itinerant population of small birds that I don’t recognize. Their voices are a bit screechy, and so I am thinking members of the starling family which they in fact may be.
They LOVE the cat food and use our garden like a fly through, taking one and disappearing to eat before returning for more. They arrived last year for a time then disappeared. Might be the same this year. Chez Jones seems to be their Birdy Buccee’s and definitely built into their SatNav.
Hope you’re getting some of the rain we’ve seen. Though not a lot nor for long, still whatever we can get is very welcome.
And NO!!! I CANNOT believe your little family is one!! The days may be long, but this past year has been short. Has it ever!

Afternoon, dear Bet! I always enjoy seeing/reading your posts. They really generate a sense of good cheer when they appear. Just got back from a pleasant lunch—taco and a side of beans. This combination almost always insures that I will lose some weight. – 5lbs when I weighed this morning.
Of late, I’ve been spending longer “Buestlo” moments at the kitchen table. Hadn’t done this in awhile so now my moments spent coffee sippin’ and reading are shared by my dear little kitty. Every morning I’m accompanied by ‘Little Tink who comes to sit at my feet waiting for a head and chin rub. Don’t know why I allowed this pleasant habit, a morning constant until I retired, to lapse. ‘Tink, bless her little heart, now treats it as a morning expectation . . . 🙂
I don’t blame you extending your Bustelo moments, dear Garrison. I keep searching for longer and longer peaceful moments and thoughts. Thursday of the Seventh Week of Easter
Today is the Optional Memorial of St. Christopher Magallanes (1869-1927), Priest, and Companions, Martyrs.
Cristobal (Christopher) and his twenty-four companion martyrs lived under a very anti-Catholic government in Mexico, one determined to weaken the Catholic faith of its people. Churches, schools and seminaries were closed; foreign clergy were expelled. Cristobal established a clandestine seminary at Totatiche, Jalisco. Magallanes and the other priests were forced to minister secretly to Catholics during the presidency of Plutarco Calles (1924-1928).
All of these martyrs except three were diocesan priests. David, Manuel and Salvador were laymen who died with their parish priest, Luis Batis. All of these martyrs belonged to the Cristero movement, pledging their allegiance to Christ and to the church that he established to spread the Good News in society—even if Mexico’s leaders had made it a crime to receive baptism or celebrate the Mass.
These martyrs did not die as a single group but in eight Mexican states, with Jalisco and Zacatecas having the largest number. They were beatified in 1992 and canonized eight years later by Pope Saint John Paul II.
“The Church … had peace and was built up; and walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it was multiplied” (Acts 9: 31). We can well apply this passage from the Acts of the Apostles to the situation which Cristóbal Magallanes and his 24 companion martyrs had to endure in the first 30 years of the 20th century. Most of them belonged to the secular clergy and three were laymen seriously committed to helping priests. They did not stop courageously exercising their ministry when religious persecution intensified in the beloved land of Mexico, unleashing hatred of the Catholic religion. COMMENTARY FOR ROMANS 8
The freedom of believers from condemnation. (1-9) Their privileges as being the children of God. (10-17) Their hopeful prospects under tribulations. (18-25) Their assistance from the Spirit in prayer. (26,27) Their interest in the love of God. (28-31) Their final triumph, through Christ. (32-39)
32-39 All things whatever, in heaven and earth, are not so great a display of God’s free love, as the gift of his coequal Son to be the atonement on the cross for the sin of man; and all the rest follows upon union with him, and interest in him. All things, all which can be the causes or means of any real good to the faithful Christian. He that has prepared a crown and a kingdom for us, will give us what we need in the way to it. Men may justify themselves, though the accusations are in full force against them; but if God justifies, that answers all. By Christ we are thus secured. By the merit of his death he paid our debt. Yea, rather that is risen again. This is convincing evidence that Divine justice was satisfied. We have such a Friend at the right hand of God; all power is given to him. WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I choose to stand on you, so that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus, the eternal Rock of Ages. I receive your holy peace now my Lord, from the sole of my feet to the crown of my head, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray the Shield of Faith into my hand now. As I take up the shield of faith, I ask that you might extinguish every dart and arrow that is launched from the enemy to take me down spiritually, physically, mentally, emotionally, and every attempt of the enemy to destroy my joy. I ask that my faith in you would make it flame out. Extinguish every flaming arrow that would come against me, my life, my family, my home, or my ministry. May my faith always be out in front of me like a shield. Give me the courage to “faith my fears” by choosing to walk by faith and not by sight, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
