The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) has released the April jobs report showing 115,000 jobs gained [DATA HERE]. Inside the numbers, federal government employment continued to decline in April (-9,000). Since reaching a peak in October 2024, federal government employment is down by 348,000, or 11.5 percent since the 2024 election.
The March report was also revised upward from 178,000 to 185,000. The overall jobs gain was double what most ‘experts’ and economic pundits had expected. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3 percent.
BLS – […] Total nonfarm payroll employment edged up by 115,000 in April, after showing little net change over the prior 12 months. In April, job gains occurred in health care, transportation and warehousing, and retail trade. Federal government employment continued to decline. (See table B-1.)
In April, health care added 37,000 jobs, in line with the average monthly gain of 32,000 over the prior 12 months. Over the month, job gains occurred in nursing and residential care facilities (+15,000) and home health care services (+11,000).
Transportation and warehousing employment increased by 30,000 in April, reflecting a gain in couriers and messengers (+38,000). However, employment in transportation and warehousing is down by 105,000 since reaching a peak in February 2025.
Retail trade added 22,000 jobs in April. Employment increased in warehouse clubs, supercenters, and other general merchandise retailers (+18,000) and in building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers (+13,000). These gains were partially offset by job losses in department stores (-7,000) and in electronics and appliance retailers (-2,000). Retail trade employment had shown little net change over the prior 12 months.
Employment in social assistance continued to trend up in April (+17,000), reflecting a gain of 24,000 jobs in individual and family services.
Federal government employment continued to decline in April (-9,000). Since reaching a peak in October 2024, federal government employment is down by 348,000, or 11.5 percent. (more)
Building supply (retail) shows strong growth (+12,500); that’s good – that’s Main Street. Leisure and Hospitality showed strong growth (+14,000); mostly from restaurants, that’s good – again, Main Street. Shrinking the federal government by another 9,000 – that’s priceless.

“ federal government employment is down by 348,000, or 11.5 percent since the 2024 election.”
All with no impact on everyday life. Thanks President Trump!
Is this the former USAID Director?
It could drop another one million and you wouldn’t notice it. Total Federal employees 2.9 million excluding active military.
Outstanding!!
I would like to quadruple that by 2028.
I think Our Favorite President can handle that.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
When Federal Government employment drops another 90,000 let me know. 9,000 is barely a dent but at least it’s in the right direction.
Well, it’s 9,000 last month… 348,000 total… I would say that’s not insignificant progress…
Let me know when an even million former federal government employees are out on the streets looking for jobs.
Brings to mind the old line…
How many federal employees work in DC?
About one third 🙂
That’s better than Vatican City, when asked how many there, worked, Pope John Paul said about half…
Might need to brush up on those fractions.
In DC, approximately less than 100? The rest are playing video games and watching porn.
or making porn…….
Yeah, right. I would guess it’s about 10%.
Define work.
These are great results for Main Street!
“Over the month, job gains occurred in nursing and residential care facilities (+15,000) and home health care services (+11,000).”

How much of the 35K is social service & home healthcare fraud?
Since Wisconsin has the most health care and social assistance subsidized jobs in the country I would wager there no shortage dead people receiving services.
I’d like to be one of the 1st to congratulate all of these jobless people on their newly provided opportunity to do something useful and productive for our society. Don’t blow it!
“Economic pundits and experts”. There’s an oxymoron for you. They’re as nonessential as the former government employees and the media.
Hopefully they will be the next group to be let go.
I hate that healthcare and social services consistently have job gains.
It’s an indicator of a sick society.
It’s an indicator our healthcare and social services is fraud and ineffective.
It’s an indicator that Obamacare’s tentacles persist.
It could be an indicator of illegals leaving and legals getting jobs?
I don’t disagree with you but a large part is aging baby boomers of which I am one. Older people need more healthcare and social services. Yes some of it is certainly lifestyle choices many people have made when younger and some still are making those lifestyle mistakes. Still a lot are hereditary diseases and genetic disease that manifest in old age.
Health care and socual assistance jobs are also subsidized jobs with Wisconsin having the most in the country. Let that sink in.
Must be something in the cheese, I guess….
Federal employment is “down by 348,000”: but still about 3,000,000 civilian Federal employees! That’s still at least 2,500,000 too many.
Subtract about 700,000 civil employees who work for the military. That doesn’t include active duty personnel.
Great news, now get oil and gas prices falling, and it will be even better.
From the chart manufacturing lost slightly. I would like to see that number increase significantly in the future. Hopefully what was signed under Trump’s tariffs still gets built and starts employing people. The Supreme Court got that one wrong in my opinion and also made a mess of the reimbursements.
More bad news on the tariffs yesterday.
There’s a lot of capital investment in buildings, plants and tooling because of 100% depreciation. Hopefully those will soon completed so manufacturing can ramp up.
Zero Hedge believes this report is a huge failure. Exclusive memberships maybe? Be thankful every day for Sundance, for the truth, for the steadfastness!
Costs of employees is not much compared to the fraud in social services programs. I would move 50% of the feds to the fraud division. After each employee has caught 500,000 fraudsters they could go back to their former job.
Pretty easy chore, from what we are seeing and hearing.
No, be laid off. That’s how it’s done in the private sector
No, get rid of the government employees. My experience with government workers the last few years, total incompetence, all the hires during biden were dei hires. Get rid of them, they are worthless.
That’s a crying shame. 9,000 federal jobs lost. We should open the borders and allow the invasion to begin.
Am not buying those health care numbers…
I find it amazing that the EXPERTS are almost always wrong. Can we stop calling them EXPERTS.
Why is it always “unexpected”?????
Only down 11.5 percent since the 2024 election? The fat in the federal government could stand a good deal more trimming.
Hear! Hear!
Imagine the drop in “contractor” employee’s! With AID closed and grants down; contractors are contracting.
I am in a wealthy suburb, although majority Desi, of Houston. I am seeing reduced restaurant traffic at both lunch and dinner (3 and 6 days a week, respectively).
The main drivers of places not losing sales are bar/restaurants that cater to both heavy drinking and family fun – sports bars.
I cannot imagine restaurants are gaining jobs.
Truly enjoying our Wait Staff! 😋😋😋
“mostly from restaurants, that’s good – again, Main Street. Shrinking the federal government by another 9,000 – that’s priceless.!!!”
Continued BLESSINGS on The USA!
They’re cooking these numbers. Same as every other administration.

Quite interesting to see where these jobs gains have been made.
Almost as if those here legally are being hired to replace illegals that were not on the books.
“Oracle just laid off 25,254 Americans.
Amazon laid off 16,000 more.
These are two of the biggest H-1B visa sponsors in America — filing thousands of new petitions right now while axing U.S. workers.
78,557 tech jobs cut worldwide in Q1 2026.
Nearly half blamed on AI/automation.
Do you notice anything?
77% of ALL global tech layoffs (59,510 jobs) came from US-based companies.
Americans fired.
H-1B talent imported.
AI used as the cover story.
This isn’t “efficiency.”
It’s replacement.”

Factory jobs added…
Again Heallth Care and Social Assistance. These are government subsidized jobs.
The government says… let’s look closer: https://www.lisep.org/tru
The birth/death factor played a big role in these positive numbers and when those government fudge factors are at play take the numbers with a large grain of salt. Biden’s DOL played those games to the hilt and you saw what happened!
Awesome news.
