Ding, ding, ding – we have a winner!! My husband is a retired firefighter – he is 6’3″ and 200 lbs. My number one criteria for anyone the department hired was that they have the physical strength AND mental fortitude to carry, or at least be able to drag, him out of a building if it were ever necessary. There was a couple of women he worked with who were in far better shape than a few of the guys, TBH, but for the most part, men are simply physically bigger and stronger than women. If they can do the job, great…but if they can’t, they shouldn’t be in the position, PERIOD!!
No matter the individual strength of a woman, we do NOT have the upper body strength that men do, and I think that is significant in the life-saving task you describe, isn’t it?
One of the women that worked with my husband was an Olympic caliber swimmer who medaled in Butterfly so she was a definite exception to the rule! Generally speaking, however, you are correct, but the tests for both police and fire were changed starting in the late 80s/early 90s and those changes have allowed way too many unqualified people into both professions! (And clearly, into Secret Services details as well….)
