According to multiple media and government accounts, Iran targeted the joint U.S-UK base at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean with two intermediate-range ballistic missiles (IRBM).
This is significant because Diego Garcia is 4,000 km away from where the missiles were launched and would indicate that all of Europe was within the strike zone as President Donald Trump previously warned.
Europe and the NATO alliance previously said Iran did not possess such capabilities. Apparently, they do.
As noted by Defense Security, “This attempted strike occurred around day 22 of the latest escalation cycle in the U.S.–Israel–Iran confrontation, reinforcing the view among defense planners that Tehran is prepared to expand its missile envelope to threaten strategic rear-area bases supporting Western operations rather than limiting attacks to regional targets within the Persian Gulf.”
“Diego Garcia’s distance of roughly 3,800 – 4,000 km from Iran makes the launch operationally significant because it suggests either the use of a lighter warhead estimated at approximately 300–500 kg or the deployment of a previously undisclosed extended-range variant, both of which indicate a deliberate demonstration of reach rather than a conventional strike attempt.”
According to the reports, one missile failed in flight whilst the other was engaged by a U.S. destroyer utilizing an SM-3 interceptor; however, as of this writing a successful interception was not confirmed.
Regardless, neither of the missiles hit the base. Iranian long-range precision missiles have not previously been publicly assessed as having this kind of range.

When I was a Navy Wife, long ago, Diego Garcia was often the topic of many jokes, cynical jokes. Recently, I have noted that the island is no longer a joking matter.
Diego Garcia Island was discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1512 and remained uninhabited until the French began using it in the late 18th century as a leper colony and for coconut plantations. After the Napoleonic Wars, the island came under British control. It remained part of Mauritius until 1965, when it became part of the newly formed British Indian Ocean Territory.
Until the resettlement of Île du Coin, Diego Garcia remained the only inhabited island of the BIOT, with a population of around 4,000 consisting predominantly of military personnel. Today, it is one of two critical U.S. bomber bases in the Indo-Pacific region, alongside Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. That was six months ago. It had been announced, and it was well known that the Iranians had the technical capability to manufacture such missiles. Now they’re there.
It was a test. From that perspective, it matters little that the missiles missed their targets. It means that the U.S. must now protect its bases in Diego Garcia or Ramstein just as it does those in the Persian Gulf, and that the Iranians are potentially capable of destroying them.

I would expect the missiles missing their target to be of major concern for the Iranian Mullahs. They’re losing this war, and losing badly. Their backs are against the wall, and they know it. At this point in the war they do not have the luxury of firing off warning shots. Each missile launched is a missile no longer in their stable. And it’s one more we don’t have to defend against. Additionally, it would be a serious blow to them if their missiles were tracking on target and our missile defense system took them out with ample time and space to spare. The degree with which we can take down missiles might not be fully known by the Iranians, or any of our adversaries. Our true missile destroying capability would be another nail in their coffin, so to speak.
I would not presume they are “losing”. They just need to exist and keep the straight closed down for a “win”. Whereas, the US and Israel need to remove them as a threat, which can only be done at great cost in lives and equipment like Viet Nam. The threat has only been reduced, it has not been eliminated. These two missiles prove that in spite of the words of POTUS.
The only thing those two missiles proved is that Iran had those two missiles. There will most likely never be a war like Viet Nam again. This engagement where they have mostly been destroyed in the sense that they have no way to fight back except by firing missiles has cost very few lives excepting that any American death is two too many. Once they run out of their finite number of missiles, what then? If we were to take down their electric grid they will be back in the stone age and missiles will be the last thing they worried about. Lets hope that the President made that statement just to push “our allies” out of their collective malaise. The correct word is strait not straight.

The missiles launched at Diego Garcia were most probably the Khorramshahr-4, also known as the North Korean made Musudan. They probably used a reduced payload to get more range.

Back in the 2012 time frame, I participated in a particular EDA (Electronics Design Automation) board that had a number of foreign nationals also as members … one active member in particular was from Iran (it was displayed as part of his avatar) … this was high-level, leading edge tech being discussed and under consideration. I was there for the reason that discussion involved some software and examples and discussions for EM (Electromagnetic) simulation software which I could find no where else … these were not ‘backwards people’ in attendance there.
They are the most intelligent and well educated people in the Middle East. They have their own home grown nuclear scientists of international stature. Their average IQ is about 10 points above that of the US.
Sounds to me like the Iranian regime is running out of options and is getting desperate. These missiles might not have been quite ready for operational use, but they are using them anyways.
