This is what happens when a true leader is leading.
Many Cuban AM radio stations are off the air either permanently or intermittently of late, sure sign of impending collapse.
Why so? Because castro long said that one radio was worth a hundred armed men, given its ability to influence people.
Thru all manner of crises, Cuban AM broadcast stations remained on air, primarily to deny Cubans the ability to hear stateside broadcasts. Secondarily, to jam American stations and lastly, to entertain the locals.
It has long been a point of honor that regardless of internal conditions, Cuba’s broadcast stations would be on the air.
Lately, not so much. Radio Progreso, AM 640, Habana, transmits from the suburb of Guanabacoa with nominal fifty thousand watts. It’s the national flagship station of the Progreso network. But lately it’s off the air during the morning while its local Progreso affiliates in Chambas, Ciego de Avila, and many other towns have gone off the air.
So it is as well with Radio Rebelde, and surprisingly, Radio Reloj, whose ticking clock background framed ‘news’ broadcasts since the Bay of Pigs invasion which John Kennedy blew.
Cuban stations being off the air is a sure sign that power troubles as well as transmitter failures plague the system. Of the fifteen or so major power plants, about two thirds remain off line plagued by turbine and boiler troubles which won’t easily be fixed.
There’s no money to fix them, and even less oil to run them.
President Miguel Diaz-Canel hails from Santa Clara province. An educated man, he’s an electrical engineer by training and he’s no fool. He has to balance the ‘socialismo forever’ attitude of some of his countrymen against that of Cubans who yearn to be free.
It likely won’t be long, given the hard signs.

I remember when Cuba was in its height of communist fervor with the Soviet Union, reports came out of the Cuban government locking political prisoners in “coffin boxes” which were like Japanese hotel capsules only they were just barely small enough for a human to fit in. Imagine being shoved in one of those and having the metal cover slid down. What a horror movie. Communism, coffin box cells.
Yes, I remember that very vividly – haunting – one particular article in the “Reader’s Digest”.
In early 1984, I had the pleasure of going to Guadalajara and it was so beautiful – lots of good places for walking, walking everywhere – to a little park called the Legion of Heroes and there was the nicest cafe where you could sip on your coffee and enjoy the leafy pretty scene – or walk to the Teatro Degallado to watch the Cuban Ballet – that was kind of weird, seeing the Cuban Ballet and much of it seemed like a propaganda program most all of the way through, what a wonderful paradise it was for all people, etc., etc., etc. and then at the end a big noisy Carnaval going up all the aisles, very loud – but there was just one little quiet segment of two young people in love who seemed to want to be free, to live free.
It’s not a got time to be a communist leader—unless you are in NYC.
