A confessed shallow thinker, I despised the Catholic Church for decades of my life. At a point in my life filled with change and recovery, I accepted it, forgave, reconciled the greater good vs the failed humanity.

The Vatican is very corrupt. I am a lifelong Roman Catholic. Many Catholics worship at a parish level and ignore the Vatican.
Just keep in mind that the Vatican has been and probably always will be a corrupt political entity but that doesn’t mean the message of the church is corrupt just the opposite, separate the wheat from the chafe. Keep the faith.

To be fair, the Church isn’t a member of the UN either. They are a Permanent Observer State in which they can add their 2 cents into the debates and such but they don’t vote. Perhaps if the Board of Peace would offer them a similar role rather than inviting them to be a member, they would accept.

I question why the leader of the original Christian church would be invited to join a political group. Were leaders of other religions asked to join? Why not? Did other religious leaders attend? What did they have to say?
The pope was wise to decline this invitation. I can’t fathom him debating political leaders. It seems to me inappropriate to invite him.
