The U.S. mediating team met with Ukraine and Russia negotiators for the second day in Geneva, Switzerland. Unfortunately, despite the high praise and customary diplomatic niceties spoken, there was not much progress.
There was, however, a rather remarkable accusation hurled by Russian media about uninvited British officials going to Geneva in order to conduct surveillance of the negotiations. Apparently, this is part of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s efforts to retain maximum involvement and influence.

Why would Russia want a deal, they are winning big on the battlefield and cannot trust any deal they sign with the west. They know NATO wants a war, they are preparing for that. They know Trump will be out of office in less than 3 years and may be out of political power in less than 1 year. They are doing exactly what they should do, pretend to negotiate while preparing for all out war in eastern Europe and the middle east.

Ukraine cannot “win back” territories it never truly controlled. Ukraine lost de facto political control over the Donbas provinces back before 2014.
Those territories never culturally integrated into Soviet-Ukraine or the post-Soviet new political entity known as Ukraine. Most of the Donbas territories weren’t shifted from Russia proper into Soviet Ukraine until 1922. Crimea wasn’t tacked onto Ukraine until 1954. Those were top-down political maneuverings done for temporary political reasons that never reflected facts on the ground. They all just went along as a package deal when Ukraine split out of the USSR in 1991.
Those territories might have been incorporated into Ukraine by the map-makers but they were never linguistically or culturally incorporated. The people in those territories never saw themselves as beholden to Kiev. They viewed themselves as Russian, spoke the Russian language, practiced the Russian Orthodox faith and voted for the pro-Russian Yanukovych.
What about Galicia under Austria from 1772 to 1919? I couldn’t find a map that shows what of current day Ukraine (a made up Soviet Republic) was part of Galicia in 1914 (also from 1772 to 1919). The Austrians totally redesigned Lwów (in Polish) / Lviv (in Ukrainian) and called it Lemberg. Anyone that is familiar with city design and architecture can see it’s a Austrian city. Ukraine’s (made up Soviet Republic) crown jewel of a city is actually Austrian. Austrians did much of the same to the rest of Galicia. The Austrians called Galicia “Austrian Siberia”.
