A couple of days ago I had a truck accident that turned out to be more involved than I thought. What ensued was some protracted busy work with my dealer, a body shop, wrecker service, car rental, and my insurance company. Happily I’m well insured, my agent is cooperative, I’m friendly with a reputable dealer I’ve dealt with before, and I’m negotiating (maybe—maybe not) for a replacement truck that I’m happy knowing I can afford (cash). Still, there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing. Happily, I now feel like I’m about to turn an essential page. I’m really looking forward to

Wonderful. Handel’s Messiah is an annual ritual for me, and “Hallelujah!” is always the triumphant highlight. I guess in Sydney there are still some believers, so it’s good to see. Thanks for posting this, it’s a great delight.
This day in 1988
I was just arriving home from a 3 year stint on ODA 101, Co A, 1st Bn., 10th SFG(A). Sherry and the kids had been living with Mom & Dad for 6 months. We had decided it would be best so they wouldn’t be uprooted more than once during the school year and so they came home early.
It was only due to the stroke of a clerks pen that I arrived home at all. Pan Am flight 103 left the same gate I departed from at Frankfort shortly before my flight. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Does Lockerbie ring a bell?
I probably have more to be thankful for than most and I know it!

Thank you. Just spent a few hours getting the place ready for my son and his wife and Granddaughter and her husband for celebrating Christmas on Christmas eve with them.
Dining room, living room, and sun room all deep cleaned. The kitchen will be tomorrow after Sherry and Corbin (our oldest granddaughter) get all the food prepared.
Then Christmas day will be at my sisters house with my family. That’s 27 people!

that flight was bound for one of the airports in NYC, I believe.
We were on our honeymoon on dec 22, 1988, and that wouldve been our connection home from NYC (but on the 23rd).
details are fuzzy, but I know there was a connection to it being part of our leg home.
Mine flew into JFK and then connecting flight to Detroit, then another to Indianapolis. But the flight to Indy was weathered out and Dad drove up with Sherry to get me at Detroit because the next flight I could get would have been 20 hrs later.

At the gate in Frankfort they checked EVERYTHING. They even made me take my black military issue ink pen apart. Then down on the tarmac we went to identify our luggage before the would load it and then as each individual did that we went up the stairs directly into the aircraft.
I’d say somewhere 40 of my jumps were night with combat equipment. I guess there’s a reason why some called us “dope on a rope”. But simple fact is that nobody that hasn’t done it can really understand.

Just imagine a 1,000s of American, British, and Canadians jumping into combat the early morning hours of June 6th, 1944.
Hi, rah, I always enjoy your posts and have a special feeling for veterans as my family is full of them.
My older brother volunteered for Vietnam and did 3 tours as a medic with the helicopter e-vac operation ‘Dust Off’. Shot down once. Crashed another time. Got many commendations/medals. We only knew of this through his CO. Sonny says the only award he cared about was his wings as “They represented 500 hours of constant fear.”
At 84 he is still kicking’ and raising plenty of dust. Has survived 2 wives, the deaths of 2 adult children, beat cancer twice, raised grandkids, is an Ordained Deacon in the Catholic church and manages his neighborhood VFW. I am very proud of him and hope you won’t mind my bragging on him here as I’m not allowed, otherwise.

Born in Metz, France, he studied at the prestigious École Polytechnique, where he was influenced by mathematicians such as Gaspard Monge and Lazare Carnot. COMMENTARY FOR JOHN 17
Christ’s prayer for himself. (1-5) His prayer for his disciples. (6-10) His prayer. (11-26)
(1-5) Our Lord prayed as a man, and as the Mediator of his people; yet he spoke with majesty and authority, as one with and equal to the Father. Eternal life could not be given to believers, unless Christ, their Surety, both glorified the Father, and was glorified of him. This is the sinner’s way to eternal life, and when this knowledge shall be made perfect, holiness and happiness will be fully enjoyed. The holiness and happiness of the redeemed, are especially that glory of Christ, and of his Father, which was the joy set before him, for which he endured the cross and despised the shame; this glory was the end of the sorrow of his soul, and in obtaining it he was fully satisfied. Thus we are taught that our glorifying God is needed as an evidence of our interest in Christ, through whom eternal life is God’s free gift.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.

A Navy hero that probably no one here has heard about but it looks me like this enlisted man has more awards than Chesty Puller.

James Elliott “Willy” Williams should have been famous.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at just 16 years old using a fake birth certificate. Born in 1930 and of Cherokee heritage, Williams wanted war, not permission. He would serve nearly 20 years, fight in two wars, and become the most decorated enlisted sailor in U.S. Navy history.
During the Korean War, Williams ran small boat raids off the North Korean coast. In Vietnam, with retirement only a year away, he volunteered again. He was assigned to the River Patrol Force in the Mekong Delta, commanding Patrol Boat 105. The mission was deadly. Stop enemy troops and weapons moving through narrow jungle waterways.
Williams excelled immediately.
In July 1966, he led patrols that captured enemy boats under fire. Then came the night of October 31. Williams and another patrol boat chased enemy sampans into a canal so narrow they could not turn around. At full speed, they burst into a massive enemy staging area. Dozens of boats packed with North Vietnamese troops and ammunition filled the waterway.
Williams did not retreat.
He drove straight at them.
At nearly 35 knots, he rammed enemy boats, splitting them in half. His guns fired nonstop. Enemy troops fell into the water. He smashed through not one, but two major enemy formations, calling in helicopter gunships while maneuvering through overwhelming fire. After three hours of combat, his crews suffered only two wounded. Williams himself was hit by shrapnel.
For that night alone, he earned the Medal of Honor.
It was not the only time.
Williams later dove into a sinking dredge to save a trapped sailor. Days later, he led another patrol against hundreds of enemy fighters and was wounded again. By the end of his career, he held the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Silver Star, multiple Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts, and rescue medals.
Only seven men in Navy history have been awarded all three top valor awards. Williams was the only enlisted man.
Then he went home. No fame. No spotlight. He became a U.S. Marshal and lived quietly. When he died in 1999, seven Medal of Honor recipients attended his funeral.
James “Willy” Williams fought harder than almost anyone in Navy history.
Most Americans never knew his name.

Thank you and yes, I have seen both. Probably because of the several different ones I follow on X that post war history and veterans stuff. Others mark the death dates with accounts of those we have lost in wars.
