NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte and German Chancellor Frederich Merz hold a press conference as a meeting in Paris this weekend (13th) and Berlin on Monday (15th) are scheduled to finalize EU terms for a negotiated Ukraine-Russia ceasefire.
Within the remarks Merz notes a preliminary document outlining possible land concessions has recently been sent to the Trump administration, and that set of documents likely includes an outline for ‘security guarantees’ assembled by the coalition of the willing (Germany, France and UK). “It mainly concerns the question of what territorial concessions Ukraine is prepared to make,” Mr Merz said. He stressed that any decision on land concessions was up to the Ukrainian government and its people.
Chancellor Merz said, “If we continue as imagined, there will be talks with the US administration over the weekend and there might be a meeting at the beginning of next week in Berlin. Whether the US administration will take part in the meeting depends on the papers we are working on [at present].”
Speaking to an audience together with NATO Secretary Rutte, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, emphasized the 28-point outline originally created by Trump, Rubio, Witkoff and Ukraine/Russia officials was dead. “As the 28-point plan was mentioned, it is no longer existing,” Wadephul said. “We had some influence on it” he remarked, seemingly bragging about how Europe destroyed the U.S plan.
Another report on Thursday said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urged Volodymyr Zelensky to accept “painful concessions” for a peace deal. According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, tensions surfaced between the two leaders as Ms Meloni pressed Mr Zelensky to accede to US demands. “There is sufficient evidence indicating that not everything went smoothly and that some differences were clearly expressed for the first time by both parties,” the newspaper stated.
Meanwhile back in Washington, DC, President Trump delivered remarks on the Ukraine-EU negotiations yesterday, noting his discussions with the European team and the potential for Trump’s emissaries to attend either the Paris or Berlin meeting if something productive can be gained from it.

VIA POLITICO – NATO Chief Mark Rutte urged member countries to do more to prepare for the possibility of large-scale war, warning that Russia may be ready to attack the alliance within five years.
“We are Russia’s next target. And we are already in harm’s way,” Rutte said on Thursday during a speech in Berlin. “Russia has brought war back to Europe, and we must be prepared for the scale of war our grandparents and great grandparents endured.”
Although he welcomed the decision by NATO members to increase overall military spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product annually by 2035, Rutte argued more needed to be done, saying alliance members must shift to a “wartime mindset.”

On one hand, I agree with other commenters here in saying that the US needs to withdraw support for NATO. That would kick the EU’s legs out from under them. The US might even throw its support behind Russia, utterly shutting the door on an EU-Russia war.
On the other hand, these actions would open the door for China to step in and throw support behind the EU. Why wouldn’t they? The Chinese economy is in the toilet, just like their vassal states in the EU. They would all benefit economically from an international war. The security guarantee that Z and the Europeans want — can only be provided by Russia. Russia must agree to the security of the remaining parts of Ukraine. Because Russia’s artillery is pointed there. So, is that possible in the context of isolating Russia? No. What is necessary is to engage Russia.
First, respect the security of Russian assets in the West. Next, remove sanctions. Then permit Russia to restore western embassies with Russian diplomats, who were kicked out. Provide visas for ordinary Russians to visit. Establish direct flights from Moscow to New York, for example. Normalize relations, and engage the Russians in business relationships.
To have peace, act like peace is already here. Go through the motions that peaceful people do. Changes in attitude follow changes in behavior. People are that way, if they practice peace, they will come to believe in it.
What is clear is the things we have been doing in Ukraine have not been working. Europe wants us to double down. But it is Europe that has reached a wall, not us. The old names and faces are too invested in stalemate to make any concessions. Therefore we must go around them, and we have the team to do it.

Europe is fantasizing about another “Grand Military Adventure” because they have utterly forgotten what “War” actually is, and what it cost them. Whereas, Russia – who paid by far the greatest price in blood – will never allow her people to forget. Perhaps these other leaders should visit “the Ossuary at Verdun” and count the bones.
The last thing Russia needs is “more territory.” But, she will defend herself if poked. And you won’t know what hit you. Don’t go there. You do not have the military capability to bring your fantasies to fruition. You should have figured that out by now.
The threat to World Peace is not Russia: it is you.
P.S.: Any defensive alliance would want “neutral territory” between themselves and their enemy, which the enemy would have to conquer first in order to get to them. Whereas, an offensive alliance would do precisely what NATO has done, for the reasons described above. Russia therefore has no misconceptions about what she is now dealing with, and she has experience with fighting Europeans that stretches back thousands of years. But, she never attacked them, intent on conquest. The reverse is now not true.
The truth is very plain to see, and NATO’s present bloviations must be regarded in that context.
It plays out in plain sight, but some prefer to look away so their carefully constructed world view stays untouched.
Zelensky will fold because he and Europe know the US will not backstop the “coalition of the willing”. What’s important is that Europe gets credit for the cease-fire / peace agreement.

As of 2023, a law in place that requires congressional approval for the United States to leave NATO. A U.S. President cannot unilaterally withdraw the country from the alliance without the advice and consent of the Senate or an Act of Congress.
Disagree. The President needs the consent to enter a treaty, not to withdraw. IMO the law is unconstitutional.
It has only been tested once, with an inconclusive result. Jimmy Carter terminated the mutual defense treaty with Taiwan. Barry Goldwater and a number of congressmen sued Carter, claiming he had no power to terminate a treaty without the advice and consent of the Senate.
The Supreme Court essentially punted, with some justices saying that it was a nonjusticiable political question, and others saying it was not ripe for judicial review due to the limited opposition in Congress. The treaty was terminated, but the issue was never settled.

Massie in the House and Lee in the Senate have introduced bills, HR 6508 and S. 2174, in Congress to have the US withdraw from NATO. Doubt the neocon warmongers will allow it to pass but it would be great if it did.

These EU people are delusional. The EU has become the new Soviet Union (bureaucratic surveillance over evrything, oligarchic/autocratic/totalitarian rule, importation of foreigners as slave/low-wage labor, etc.) while Russia looks more like pre-WWI USA.
