Example: when you go to flightaware, you are observing ads-B locations of any flight in near real time. It’s a requirement to have this on all commercial and even some private aircraft…this is an international agreement. However, there are some exceptions and I would point to military and also narco aircraft that would never consider advertising where they are with a transponder. And it’s quite trivial to actually turn the transponder off at any time…a violation for commercial aircraft, but it can be done. I can’t imagine that Venezuela is advertising military or narco flights with ads-B. It would be quite stupid. However, it’s possible they are transmitting some kind of IFF transmission (quite different than ADS-B), so that they are not targeting their own.

Even with a GPS I had difficulty navigating the winding roads, construction closures, with crowds of druggies, addicts, weird homeless people and trash everywhere. The nicest thing which could possibly happen — my friends took pity on me and dropped me off and picked me up after our visits. Since both husband and wife were police officers I knew I was safe ! That place scared me more than many third world countries where I have actually visited and enjoyed !
Actually Portland is arranged fairly well – especially the NW downtown area called the ABC district. The streets running east to west are in alphabetical order while the others are numbered. The SW area isn’t so obvious but not hard to learn. Portland has terrible problems that caused me to leave after spending most of my life there..but getting around wasn’t one of the issues that were any worse than most other places.

Any flight without a transponder can be shot down over the Gulf, just like in Tom Clancy’s book, Clear and Present Danger. Radar does not require the transponder to be turned on. Of course, there are different types of radar with some being more sensitive than others to different aspects of objects in flight.

Various private organizations as well as the larger airlines in-house dispatch departments monitor a variety of conditions every day from hazards to aviation from weather, unusual situations for which NOTAMs (NOticesTOAirmen) as issued, volcanic ash, and wartime activities. Also good things like smooth air free from turbulence and favorable winds. That is why the tracks over the North Atlantic change slightly each day – everyone taking advantage of the same winds. Airport construction or local political unrest generate NOTAMs every day. Airlines are particularly sensitive due to the need to get their crews safely to the hotel and back to airport on time – not stuck or trapped or worse in a political protest – especially in uniform. When the protests become violent, or people start shooting at airplanes – word gets out quickly. Airlines used to use a similar amount of in-house discretion in assessing political risk as private operators. However after Malaysian Airlines found fuel savings from the shortcut more important than avoiding Ukrainian conflict area in the last Ukrainian war, and got an airplane full of Northern European, Canadian, and USA doctors shot down (on way to a WHO conference), the underwriters stepped in and took a more serious view about what was and was not Acceptable Risk. Flying into known Conflict Areas has never been the same. Now, people who actually need to get in or out of Conflict Areas can charter a seat on one of the few special-risk operators who do that kind of flying. Hint: lots of cargo room, but few First Class seats on those airplanes.
I have no inside sources anymore, but I am willing to bet that after that announcement from Trump, some orders went out to issue a NOTAM and the 5 underwriters who insure every non-Russian and non-Chinese airline sent out a message that coverage would be rescinded for all ops if anyone tried to violate the NOTAM.

I know someone in my family this happened to. Very unpleasant experience but his doctor knew what it was and he is better but still using pot, just not as much. Go figure. Legalizing this substance is proving more negatives than it should. Just stay off it.

Worth noting – the primary means of pain relief at home, after more smoking becomes ineffective, are long, hot showers.
Heating pads are very effective for treating pain.

Since September 2025, there has been an increase in Global Navigation Satellite System
(GNSS) interference in the Maiquetia Flight Information Region (SVZM FIR), as well as
activity associated with increasing Venezuela military readiness.
Some civil aircraft recently reported GNSS interference while transiting the SVZM FIR,
which, in some cases, caused lingering effects throughout the flight. GNSS jammers and
spoofers can affect aircraft out to 250 nautical miles and can impact a wide variety of
critical communication, navigation, surveillance, and safety equipment on aircraft.
Additionally, since early September, Venezuela has conducted multiple military exercises
and directed the mass mobilization of thousands of military and reserve forces. While
Venezuela has at no point expressed an intent to target civil aviation, the Venezuelan
military possesses advanced fighter aircraft and multiple weapons systems capable of
reaching or exceeding civil aircraft operating altitudes, as well as potential low-altitude risk
from man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) and anti-aircraft artillery.
