My problem with dystopian/post-apocalyptic movie and stories is that usually, the “how” of how we got to that point isn’t usually explored. I get the existential threat of AI. The only thing keeping everybody safe from the NSA dragnet of the world’s Internet is the fact that it is impossible to crunch that much data, and AI does seem to solve that problem. On the other hand, both current AI tech and the people running it are fundamentally flawed. AI cannot reliably do what people want it to do. Tech bros have no real understanding of human nature. And their attempts to control us, because they are fundamentally flawed, are not working.
Social media engagement is dying. Dead Internet Theory is increasingly being proven true. X is full of bots and foreign shills. Hollywood, arguably the biggest psyop on the planet, is on its last legs. Companies aren’t seeing a return on their AI investments and are starting to drop subscriptions. I think there’s a lot of pain in front of us, but I don’t think it ends with a digital dystopian surveillance state. I do think we need to protest it, push back, do whatever we can, but I don’t think this ends there. even if they manage to achieve it, it won’t last.

As I stood in the check-in line at Dulles airport for an international flight I was about to take on 29 August 2021, I watched as 100’s, and I do mean 100’s, of Afghan nationals that had been evacuated by the US Gov’t during the collapse of Afghanistan just a few days prior were being led through the airport by uniformed members of the US military and loaded onto dozens of Greyhound style tour buses that stretched the entire length of the drop-off area just outside the airport entrance. Rough looking men, bedraggled women, wide eyed children and crying babies all wearing traditional Afghan clothing and carrying what I assumed was literally everything they owned in trash bags. This was 3 days after 13 US service members had been killed at the Kabul Airport bombing and as I watched these fake “refugees” streaming into my country it made me sick.
