The AP is reporting on information from the Senate. A deal has been reached.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is voting on the first steps to end the 40-day government shutdown Sunday after a group of moderate Democrats agreed to proceed without a guaranteed extension of health care subsidies, angering many in their caucus who wanted to continue the fight.
The group of three former governors — New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan and Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine — said they would vote to reopen if the Senate passed three annual spending bills and extend the rest of government funding until late January. Senate Majority Leader John Thune endorsed the deal Sunday night and called an immediate vote to begin the process of approving it.
“The time to act is now,” Thune said.
The deal would also include a future vote on the health care subsidies, which would not have a guaranteed outcome, and a reversal of the mass firings of federal workers that have happened since the shutdown began on Oct. 1. The full text of the deal has not yet been released.

The Schumer shutdown is effecting economic growth by as much as 50%. It’s affecting commerce, transportation, the military, border patrol/ice & many other essential functions.
There are a lot of businesses that rely on federal contracts. A lot of them small businesses, as the feds have prioritized giving bids to small businesses in recent years.
I lost my job on a federal contract due to the funding spigot being shut off even before the shutdown happened.

I’ve got news for Bernie: For any of us who run (or ran) really small businesses, premiums immediately tripled right after the ACA was passed, we DID have to change our plans and doctors, then, in short order, the premiums quadrupled or more. It put a lot of small businesses I did work for out of business and crippled others, and was the beginning of the end for us.
Yeah, I also remember one of the major reasons for passing the ACA was because there were 27 million people without health insurance because they could not afford it.
And how many people are there now without health insurance? Surprise–27 million!

The House is in no mood to agree with this Senate deal. They passed a fair deal with a clean CR. Be interesting to see how many Dem Senators they get to agree with this deal to pass it. If it’s only a minimal number of them, then most House Dems will be against it, and so will many House conservatives.
I see this as setting up the Republican-controlled Senate for failure. They pass this trojan horse and the House rejects it. Now the Republicans in the Senate will feel they have to cave further with some other ridiculous deal that will ultimately get enough House Democrats to get it passed in the House.
I agree that it’s questionable that the House passes this but I suspect they’re feeling the pressure to get people paid and fund things like SNAP, which may make them bend pretty easily.
The House is also in recess for a “district work period” so they’re not even in town. CNN reported that they said they could be back within 48 hours if there’s a deal they need to vote on.
If the House makes changes this could ping-pong into another week or two.
The only good thing is that the vote in December to extend the subsidies is not a given to pass in both the Senate and the House on a stand-alone basis, and even if it did I would think that President Trump would veto it now that he has come out with his own plan to eliminate the subsidies.
I don’t see the Dems winning on this issue.

They are probably trying to get around that by calling this an amendment to the clean bill from the House. But if they ever stopped pretending it would be marked as totally new and different, and definitely NOT “clean.”

Senate Democrats throwing seniors, hungry kids and needy veterans under the bus because they want tax credits for their broken health care law.
Many were just campaigning this morning on the need to fund SNAP to feed those people.
Now, unless they demand a vote on these extensions within the next few days, their voters are going to see how much their premiums increase under their failed law. If they don’t know already from the many Democrats using them as examples in their fear-mongering.

I think Maggie Hassan has said she’s not running again. But, with the cost of groceries here in MA, if it’s similar in NH, I can see constituents screaming about loss of benefits. I paid over $400 this week to feed a family of 4.
I have heard online of grocery prices coming down with the snap benefits cut off and grocery stores with fewer shoppers, but not seeing it here.
Please understand history. The last actual, legal, budget, that was passed, was under GW Bush. It included between 700 and 867 Billion dollars in “Toxic Asset Relief Programs”, TARP, depending upon whose numbers one chooses to believe. 2007.
EVERY Continuing Resolution since 2007 has included an “extra” ~800 Billion in debt. Every CR adds to that with “Baseline Budgeting” or “whatever was,plus whatever we added”. Every CR has supported this insane fiscal policy, because it started with Obama and continues to this day. 20 Trillion Dollars of the 38 Trillion dollar debt is BECAUSE OF “Continuing Resolutions”.
Nobody seems to understand this. It is fiscal irresponsibility, played off as “necessary”, when it certainly is not.
Getting a “Clean CR” simply extends, again, another 0.8 Trillion dollars of debt, plus whatever else “they” negotiate.
It is WAY past time to end this fantasy and cut funding to things that are not, were not, and cannot, be funded by any rational reason. The pig trough has gotten too large, for too long, and is simply binding us, our children, their children, and great/grand children, to poverty.
Funding every fantasy known to politics is not why America was founded.

Old news, anyone who for some odd reason doesn’t understand this one simple aspect of the Continuing Resolution scam really isn’t paying attention. They’ve had free reign over just shy of a billion dollars with absolutely no oversight since 07.
They are addicted to your money and will come for it no matter what. Next up….pensions. Roberts changed the ACA to tax and the government passed legislation requiring us to have healthcare insurance or pay a penalty at tax time. It was the first time in America history our government forced us to purchase something. Just for giggles, how far of a stretch would it be for them to pass legislation requiring X% of our pensions be in federal bonds? They end up with our money and we get worthless paper. Think it can’t happen?

Live coverage indicates that John Cornyn is enroute to vote on the motion for cloture. That would give 60 votes if he votes with the Republicans. This vote doesn’t open the gov’t, I don’t believe, but it’s a big step in the right direction.
I sincerely hope the suffering by those in-need American citizens are relieved, but also hope for a pox on the houses of all politicians who caused or extended this debacle. The Obama and Biden Administrations ripping and tearing the fabric of our culture and Constitution has caused this and many more crisis situations yet to surface. Just this week, we see the Democrats uniting with and supporting Communist politicians in major positions. If Republicans or any other Conservative groups give an inch will only increase the Demo/Commie threat to America!

I cancelled my trip to this week to visit my sister’s in Florida tonight. And so did my cousin in New York visit to Miami Beach. . Even if the government supposedly opens again it going to take time for the dust to settle before I ever get on a plane again.

I saw something on a search that said he is still trying to get Trump’s endorsement for re-election. Ken Paxton is challenging Cornyn in the primary. I have received more than one Cornyn campaign flyer saying that he has voted for Trump’s agenda 99% of the time.
Exactly what was Cornyn demanding for his vote?

I’m certainly not a Cornyn apologist, but to claim he was a “holdout” is a false narrative. He was in flight back to DC which is why he was last. As I understand it, he arrived & was taken straight to the chamber to cast his vote. He was never considered a NO vote on this bill.
But why was he not already there when the Senate was in Session during this “government shutdown crisis”? Did he fly home Thursday (he didn’t vote on Friday either) to campaign?
He, cornyn is a liar. He is desperate for President Trumps endorsement. His voting record is dismal for MAGA.
I plan on doing everything I can to get that snake out of the Senate and get Ken Paxton in here locally in our small town.
