There is lots of grinding to be done.
The Dims are going to keep winning legislature seats after what the Republicans did to the millions of poor voters who voted Republican because of President Trump for the past decade but have now STOPPED voting for either party after what the Republican legislature did to them in the “big beautiful bill” with respect to healthcare and student loans. They also saw these Republican legislatures carry water for their corporatist funders to resist President Trump who was busy working to lower the LISEP metric (24.7% of all U.S. workers and job seekers are “functionally unemployed” at this time) and raise real wages.
The Republican party has a “branding problem” now with millions of poor voters affected by this who have stopped voting altogether for either party’s candidates. If you believe Gallup polling, the GOP still has about half of the middle-class (47%) and about half of the blue collar class (53%) but they have lost most of their voters who are below the poverty line.
*Poof* they are gone and everyone in the Republican party is in denial about that fact.
So what the conservatives are doing is avoiding introspection and fixing the problems they created for these people and instead cycling their usual pundits to talk about how bad the other guys are. That used to work with those poor voters who were voting Republican because of President Trump who was promising they wouldn’t lose their subsidized Medicaid if they got sick and lost their job because of it or were between jobs when they got sick. But that promise has been broken starting 01/01/2027. So, they have changed the channel. The Democrats did not pick up their vote, rather the GOP has lost their vote. And that’s going to matter at election time. The Republicans will lose the Senate first, then the House.
Branding in politics is extraordinarily important, often decisive in modern elections. And now the GOP has a branding problem among poor voters who are now choosing to vote for none of the above. The recent election results speak for themselves. Sure, those are blue areas but they got a lot bluer when those who voted red in 2024 stopped voting.
Nationally, Trump received 77.3 million votes in 2024. While off-year elections often have a much lower turnout than presidential years, the drop among Republicans in the recent elections were materially steeper than normal suggesting a real dissatisfaction with the GOP (though not with President Trump). I believe it’s for the reasons I stated. Poor people aren’t going to keep voting for a party that strips them of healthcare when they get sick. Organizations like Pew Research Center will likely take this up in the near future and we shall see what they report.
I was “stripped” of my healthcare insurance under obamacare and the dems and it has only gotten exponetially worse.
And you voted a straight Republican ticket afterwards like every other Republican in the middle class did. Republicans in the middle class and the blue collar are continuing to vote red. That is not the problem. It’s the poor voters on Medicaid that were voting red who have stopped voting altogether.
