Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters he informed President Trump, “The votes aren’t there” to kill the filibuster. Ergo, the govt shutdown will continue.
The issue is somewhat frustrating for those who have followed DC events closely. The Democrats hated the Big Beautiful Bill budget and spending legislation, so the Republicans had to suspend the filibuster to pass it. However, the Democrats are blocking the BBB budget and spending legislation by shutting down government, and the Republicans will not suspend the filibuster to open it.
WASHINGTON DC – Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday there’s not enough support among Republican senators to eliminate the filibuster as President Donald Trump ramps up pressure to change the chamber’s rules to allow the simple-majority passage of legislation. “The votes aren’t there,” Thune told reporters.
Thune said he had spoken to Trump about the issue — he didn’t specify when — and questioned whether his campaign against the filibuster should come as a surprise. (more)
The Moonbat leftists are not the biggest problem; they never have been. They are ideologues, mostly. Insufferable, stupid, violent at times, but easy to spot. Remember, Democrats quest for power; Republicans quest for money. Always underline this, because it’s really important.
The Moonbat leftists seek power, seek control of your life, and they are open in their insufferably stupid arguments to get there. When they start to lose, they turn violent. This is their history.
That said, they are not the most dangerous.
The professional Republicans are more dangerous, because their priority is money. As a result, their approaches, goals, objectives and arguments can be purchased.
Republicans have no interests, goals or objectives, nor allegiances, that supersede their primary objective – getting money, and growing their wealth.
Democrats will come at you with a knife, a gun or a baseball bat. You can see them. The professional Republican guy standing beside you, however, is willing to take a payment to shoot you in the ear when you don’t see it coming.
This is also why it seems like Democrats stick together, and Republicans split. Democrats are chasing a common goal, a collective goal – power. Republicans are chasing a commonality, yes, but an individual goal – money, their wealth.
Donors contribute to the Democrat agenda because their interest is to benefit from power. Republicans modify their agenda to benefit donors, because their goal is money.
Democrats stay on task, power. Republicans are flexible, money.
You enter a war against Leftists with extreme danger. However, the danger is not the war in front of you, it’s the army beside you waiting to get a payment from the enemy in front of you.
Out of a group of 1,000 Democrats, 900+ will join in to defend a weakened Moonbat leftist (see Kimmel).
Out of a group of 1,000 Republicans, you will find, maybe, 5 willing to cover your back regardless of how much bribery is put in front of them.
Remember this, understand this, and the reality of who presents the most danger to us is accurately framed.
Republicans do not simply snatch defeat from the jaws of victory; they sell defeat to the highest bidder!
It is interesting to watch Senate Republicans proclaim how agencies like the DOJ and FBI have lost the institutional trust of the American people due to corruption, while simultaneously the same Senate Republicans never note the trust loss within their party as a result of their willful blindness to it.
Wax on…. Wax off. Today is another Monday.

The Democrats stick together because they fear ostracizing from the Party. The Republicans have less fear, because they are more independent. I don’t see how your generalization about power and money explain this.
Can the Republicans independently LOVE America?
While the Democrats together love power instead?
How much is loving America worth?
A good nights sleep, a clear conscious?
It is more gratifying to think we are common sense conservatives…. put a handle/name on that.
Independents won’t work.
Nine out of ten “independents” are leftists anyway.
I have to disagree with you. The Republicans, as a whole, do not have “less fear”, nor are they “more independent”. And the Democrats don’t stick together because they fear their own party. It’s all a big game where they play cowboys and indians, then go to lunch together. Once you accept the Uniparty concept, it’s easier to guard against the corruption and manipulation. Just sayin’. It’s a hard pill to swallow at first, but once you do, you can see the strings on the marionettes.
I don’t mean that the Republicans are not party members (not ‘Independents’ as the media labels those not in the two major parties); I mean they are less fearful of Party discipline, hence less needful of Party approval. I agree that the both parties fall in line with the economic (hence policy) interests of the K-Street lobbies, creating a Uniparty, but those interests are more about money than power.
Trump’s second term will have the same flame-out as the first term did because almost nothing will be done legislatively. Everything getting done is via EO, which is only temporary. People, countries, and crooked political types can just wait-out Trump’s term and then resume business as usual. The goal is to do no lasting damage to the system that took decades to create and makes them rich and powerful.
Trump is in this alone. Playing nice with the GOP won’t work. All he needs to do is look back at Trump I to see how that strategy played-out. God kept him alive for a reason. I seriously doubt it was to play tiddlywinks with a bunch of lying, backstabbing dirt-bags in the GOP. Have the courage to confront these people head-on. Why the cowardice? Who’s advising him on how to deal with these pricks?
we could absolutely capture more of the legislative, but frankly, trump is antagonizing more war everywhere and shilling for people like lindsey.
that does not exactly lead to an energized broad coalition showing up midterm to bring him more support….
Frankly your Bullheaded cyclic vomiting of unsupported slander against President Trump is disgusting.
Go shill your disruptive and prevaricate wares somewhere else
Muley speaks the truth.
You can both be supportive and criticize our current President. You make it sound like he’s perfect and we should all submit. Hard pass, bro.
President Trump never shills for anyone ever……..he plays a lot of people to get deals done and some here pretend to be supportive only to constantly criticize.
And those critical people never have constructive ideas on how to help PDJT get things done.
Part of the shutdown problem is simple semantics. Republicans say the democrats shut the government down but that’s not quite true. I believe republicans should be saying “the democrats are voting NO to reopen the government” which is absolutely true and paints them with a big negative.
Shutting down the government can be a good thing to many so how does saying that diminish the democrats? Republicans should be naming names and saying “blank” voted NO 14 times to not open the government. There is a psychological factor here in saying NO every time you mention democrats.
Complacency with the status quo will get us nowhere as a party or country.. You are the definition of a dunce.
The definition of a strawman argument is trying to pin another to an argument that was never made.
Maybe next election you can find someone to vote for who you like. Maybe.
Or hey, maybe you could move to a nice quiet country where the government does as you like. Think so?
Meanwhile, throw shade. That’s always a good solution to your woes.
Good comments MsWords.
There are a few posters here who whine and fuss endlessly that nothing can be done about our Counts problems.
No matter what fatastic success Pres Trump pulls off for them it is never enough.
I have always wondered what these people have to live for, everything in their life is awful and nothing is ever going to change.
Ever.
If this is true why do they care about anything like reading and commenting here or getting up in the morning.
According to them life is sh*t and we are all going to starve., so why try to stay alive even one more day.
Yes, when someone stands up to the corruption at all levels — foreign and domestic — and gives their all to the fight — these people sit back like fat toads on their lily pads and scream “but you didn’t ________!” (fill in the blank with their favorite complaint on any particular day).
It’s estimated that PT has made almost $2 billion since January, so pardon my laughter at your “[standing] up to the corruption” line.
What are you laughing at? Do you even know?
President Trump has ownership in several businesses and of course he made money. That doesn’t mean anything is corrupt.
So put up or shut up. Where exactly is the corruption you’re trying to imagine?
By the way, before you make up something, President Trump is perhaps the most audited man in history.
You’re the joke worth laughing at.
Well said, Ms Words, thank you
Nothing wrong with making money honestly. Good for President Trump.
Many people deride Trump for making money selling coins, hats, watches, sweatshirts… He has to pay for his lawyers somehow. They have had him and his family, his business associates in court on everything you can imagine. I think its great he can support his own defense with his brand. At least he is not on GIVESENDGO. More power to him.
Only the left believes making money is corruption.
Sealing the border does, trying to eliminate cartels and drugs does, trade deals that are better for us does, boxing in China and getting pharmacuticals back in the USA and manufacturing does, expanding oil drilling and lowering gas prices does, getting out of everything climate change does………..anything else in you myopic view?
Calling President Trump a coward is interesting.
I can’t begin to fathom how your mind works.
It’s not. Likely hasn’t been working well at all for a while.
Plot twist. Trump is part of the game.
Plot twist: I assume you make up crap to get attention because what you write isn’t good enough to get paid.
Are you always a bully?
Perfectly said. Talk is cheap and that is all the republicans in the house and senate have. They are impotent in action.
Can this all get voted on somehow.
Get them all on record in time to do some good?
Then we have our own term limits.
House members years ago could take a Senator of their state out. 17th Amendment made Senators elected. They tried to get rid of 17th and put the House Members in each state responsible for whe their Senator would be.
Then they had to work together.
How do you know he hasn’t? He doesn’t have to tell you everything he does. BTW – I think your crystal ball has a low battery.
Just on this filibuster issue alone, why didn’t Trump talk this over with Thume and Johnson before mentioning it to the media, he just ended up making republicans look more feckless.
Thune is a RHINO. What did we expect from him other than obstruction.
Republicans are quite capable of looking entirely feckless on their own.
Thune and Johnson know perfectly well what President Trump wants. It’s not exactly a secret.
For them to pretend otherwise, now THAT’S feckless to the nth degree.
Bc he REALLY doesn’t want the bill to pass.
Who’s the Chairman of this he Senate Rules Committee you ask?
ChiCom Mitch of course.
My eyes and ears tell me Mitch McConnell is in no better shape than Joe Biden was when he was the pretender in chief. Mitch should not be the chairman of anything.
He can be chairman of Creepy Groper Joe’s pudding club.
Yes. Mitch schooled Thune very well to carry his
power/money making forward.
I don’t think 47 will take to this very well, me thinks somehow all the aid money going all over the planet, ( if he can) will stop, or the threat of stopping it , and use that money to pay all the agencies that are not paid now here in America. Get a couple of judges to stamp their approval before its acknowledged . unorthodox times call for unorthodox actions. My gut tells me this is what we have been preparing for, slowly at first, then all at once. Bet a wooden nickel the shutdown goes past Thanks Giving. Its going to get a whole bunch worst.
“…shoot you in the ear…”
Interesting
👍
Well said, Sundance. Thank you.
Who is benefiting from the shutdown – trying to figure out the Republican incentive to keep it closed?
Democrats 100%
We know you are – that’s been obvious since about your second post on CTH…
how?
Haven’t you heard? The republicans have voted 14 times to open the government and the democrats have voted NO 14 times! I’m trying to figure out why you think republicans are keeping the government closed.
The king of the RINOS is propped up by approximately mere 422,000 South Dakotan voters in a nation of approximately 342,000,000 people.
Small individual contributors are reported to comprise only 6.73% of his campaign committee’s source of funds between 2019-2024: https://www.opensecrets.org/members-of-congress/john-thune/summary?cid=N00004572
Would Jesus legislate that U.S. citizens who lose their jobs because they are stricken with infirmity (or between jobs when stricken with infirmity) be denied both Medicaid and the ACA unless they are in state of frailty or disabled? How hard is it to make the threshold medically necessary instead of frailty so they and their families aren’t left to twist in the wind? What do you think about the mass offshoring to foreign nations, mass outsourcing of U.S. work to foreign firms, and mass in-sourcing of foreign replacement labor that’s left 24.7% of U.S. workers presently “functionally unemployed” per the LISEP metric?
Well stated American. Thune is nothing more than a Mitch replacement shill.
Yes.
Great post! Sums it up nicely.
I don’t disagree with anything said. I have always been in independent, and will never vote for a Democrat again in my life, but will also never be a Republican.
That said it still takes 60 votes to end the filibuster from what I understand so even if the Republicans all stuck together and voted to end it there would still need to be Democrats voting yes.
If played right this puts the Democrats in a very bad situation. Trump wants to end the filibuster and get on with funding the government.
Democrats have been saying he should do that, but if they vote no, then they have no argument that the shutdown is not on them.
It takes suspending the rule which can be done in the Senate Rules Committee. It’s not like its never been done before…
However the chairman of said committee is ChiCom Mitch & his exhilarating insurrection didn’t turn out the way he planned so he’ll use whatever means available to him to stick it in our back. Including this shutdown.
Exactly SM! Thune is a useful Mitch idiot, planted by Mitch to carry on his (Mitch & others) personal, obstructive machinations. Vile people indeed.
And after all the medical issues Turtle’s had he still can’t feel G-d’s tapping him on his shoulder
maybe he needs a good punch in the face….
Hand goes up and I am saying pick me, pick me, please!!!!
He ignores it as money and power are his Gods! I can not put into words, without getting kicked off here, what my feelings are toward both the senate and the house (small letters used on purpose).
I struggle every month just to make ends meet. Most of these evil demons come into congress and leave very wealthy. Maybe if we would quit paying them during a shutdown they would quickly do something about it. One can dream! Disgusted does not begin to relay how I really am feeling.
The filibuster can be scrapped by a simple majority vote of 51 Senators.
Even if the votes are not there, I’d still like to have the vote on it. Let the voters see which Republicans are providing cover for the Democrats.
Aren’t there three Democrats voting along with the Republicans to end the shut down? Who are the Republican’s not willing to vote to end the filibuster? Name them!
So you’re not a Republican but you’ll be voting Republican?
To many god dammed RINOS that need voted out.
Please be so kind as to not take God’s name in vain. Thank you.
Well Johnny, you are supposed to be the Majority Leader – go lead and get the votes. Oh wait, that’s right, you are an impotent useless POS. So Marco, what is it that you can tell us about Senator Thune? Anything? Marco? Marco? Ya, thought so.
I tell you what, let’s get McCarthy back. What do you think?
NO.
“What is irreparable is that faith between man and man which is the arterial pulse of community; for henceforth the conspirator is indistinguishable from the man beside you. Security shatters, not because there are no more locks, but because the men naturally trusted with the keys and combinations are themselves the conspirators.” Whittaker Chambers, Witness
Great Book!
What can conservatives hope for, given Sundance’s realistic portrait? It seems as if nothing, unless ending Congress would be possible. Because as it currently is, Congress is a hindrance to conservatives. They refuse to legislate, they refuse to even create a budget, they don’t act to support any independent conservatives. They are useless if not harmful. Whenever one of them puts out the tin cup, why should any of us contribute to them when they never do anything for us?
“Experience: that most brutal of teachers. But you learn, my God do you learn” -C. S. Lewis.
Council On Foreign Relations “buddies” who worked together to destroy our country.
If it was me, I would be inviting John Fetterman to the White House. I would find out how many votes he can make a deal to deliver, given that the Dems know the era of Schumer is ending.
Let the four Republican Senators who will not vote for the nuclear option, believing the President will buy their votes and raising the price; let them wait for the phone to ring. Sometimes a person has their pride, an animadversion to pulling out the cheque book for recalcitrant GOP Senators once again.
That is an interesting idea. I like it. Thanks for getting this senior’s brain thinking about this further.
Same with the tariffs.
The senate voted to revoke the president’s power to impose tariffs. Trump is talking cookies out of their cookie jar.
I wish I had confidence in the Supreme Court to rule in favor of us. But I’m afraid they represent DC instead.
There was once this guy from Italy, his name was matchstick, no it was macroravioli, no, I got it, Machiavelli!
Imagine if this Machiavelli guy hired the ‘seven ways to Sunday’ consulting firm and let them loose on the GOP.
Priceless.
This absolutely nails it!
As a friend of mine once said, “F***’em all but six. Leave some for the pall bearers.”
What she was saying I don’t know, but I am getting damn tired of this deep state sh*t! We The People should be calling for an Article V Convention to look at revisions to Article II of the Constitution, or seek the repeal of Amendment XVII.
Terrible, reckless idea to open up our US Constitution to the jackals of the Convention of States project. James Madison and numerous other brilliant men warned against this.
Or he’s lying. A few arms twists, really uncomfortble ones, to the recalcitrant ones, and it’s a change.
Oh well. I guess it stays closed then.
Steve Bannon has said many times that the GOPe is just going to wait out this second terms, same as the first, and then go back to business as usual.
They are absolutely the enemy of MAGA, which is why President Trump should really oversee the start of the MAGA political party.
There are republicans in the senate but no conservatives. I decide in 2016 that I’m bot a republican or part of the Republican Party. I’m a conservative and a member of MAGA. There is a not so subtle difference
JMO.
“They’ve got him this time.” “They” being the dastardly democrats / RINOs.
Nope, it is just the same-o-Catch-22 trap used by the democrats / RINOs in their unsuccessful attempts to stop President’s effort to MAGA by using America First processes. They have been setting it unsuccessfully for 4 years.
It is their standard globalist / communist / democrat / RINO Catch-22 Trap.
It is the only trap they have. They are a one-trick pony.
President Trump knows there is a universal way to not fall for their “Catch-22” traps:
….. you ignore their unconstitutional rules and
………. make your own constitutional rules and
…………… clear your own pathway
……………….. to where you want to end up.
……………………… then you just go.
So, watch carefully …..
History in the making.
“MAGA isn’t just our motto, it is our duty!
This is a great article to read and understand but what now?
At some point my three sons in the army aren’t going to get paid!
I have six grandchildren between the three families, two of them live pay check to paycheck.
Something’s gotta give.
Maybe not enough Republicans, OK. But what about all those Democrats who have been saying over and over that if the Republicans ‘really’ wanted to end the shut down, they would end the filibuster.
So, how about EXPOSING those Democrats and pressuring them into voting to end the filibuster?
Too hard?
“Republicans do not simply snatch defeat from the jaws of victory; they sell defeat to the highest bidder!” Simple yet exceedingly profound!
MCthune should have the vote and out the RINO’s. But he won’t. Gotta protect his brethren.
Brilliant Sundance “They sell defeat to the highest bidder”
Trump-45 made the comment he will have to teach the Republicans how to fight.
Looks like another round of lessons is needed.
Hence, why I unregistered as a Republican on January 6th. I am an Independent voter.
I absolutely hate voting Republican now, but I know Trump needs as much support as he can get in order to do what we hired him to do. There isn’t a single Republican who works as hard as Donald J Trump does, and for no pay!
There aren’t enough votes my a$$. What a racket.
Unless you have an open primary, it limits your ability to sand their gears. That can make a difference on some down ballot and local seats.
This is imprinted deeply in my mind. Thank you, Sundance, for the clarity.
Most of the 12 appropriation bills have been passed out of their respective committees in both the House (12) and the Senate (8) between June and September. But few have been brought to the floor of the House to actually vote on (3-{all 3 passed}).
https://www.congress.gov/crs-appropriations-status-table
As long as Winred is not shut down, they have no reason to act.
Paid to lose.
The GOP “establishment” (GOPe) is our real enemy. If we are to peacefully take back the US from the globalists, then MAGA has to fight and beat GOPe in the PRIMARIES, and at the state and local levels of the GOP machine to first reclaim the GOP for the “grassroots”. If MAGA only shows up for the general elections (against the dems), that will typically just result in having to choose between a GOPe/RINO candidate and the dems – the classic “lesser of two evils”. And while I support President Trump (voted for him in all three campaigns), he is not helping MAGA by endorsing any GOPe/RINO incumbents.
Bottom line – If MAGA doesn’t take real control of the GOP, then the GOPe will marginalize, co-opt and corrupt MAGA just like they did to the “Tea Party”. And then post-Trump, it will be back to the “business as usual” of both the GOPe and dems screwing over “We the People”.
Well said.
What happened to your possible position providing advice on where to look in the pile of dung that is DC?
This is where President Trump needs to make those Senators an offer they can’t refuse.
The GOP Empire Strikes Back.
I am still surprised that they are willing to let the country be destroyed and that it won’t touch them. That it won’t destroy people near to them. Perhaps it’s just the color of money overrides any concerns they may have.
Sundance had said it would be thus.
If God is with us, who can be against us. PFFT on both parties! Pray up everyone. If we have God, we have everything we need.
It’s only a matter of when. But the next time the Dems whem the trifecta, they will do such that. They have already gave away the game and said so. The Rinos play to lose.
Trump should manage his endorsements wisely. He has been THE force in the GOP and GOP senators ignore him. This is largely on Trump for not replacing senators who oppose his plans.
I’ve emailed my 2 Tx senators to End the Filibuster …when Demarxist party regains control, they will in a nyminute.
so basically, we’re held hostage by thune and the spine-free gop
Trump for head of RNC when he retires from 2nd term! What Sundance describes is even at state and city levels. In MN republicans are saying we need to nominate candidates that can win, but the people saying that haven’t won a statewide race in 20 years!
The establishment in MN has given in to people like Tom Emmer who has his fingers in all kinds of anti-grassroots activities. These people constantly fight against strong conservatives saying they can’t win in MN. But yet they have no winning record to make that claim.
All the NO vote Republicans need to be named, shamed, and widely advertised.
Never forget that John Thune is Mitch O’Connell’s clone… he was groomed by Mitch to become the Majority Leader. I hope the president and his team remember this, too.
Thune does only what McConnell tells him to do. There are many traitors to the people in the (R) party.
I can name only the obvious four.
Thune doesn’t count. He is McConnell-lite without a mind of his own. A “gentleman” empty suit. The most detestable type of destructive force in DC.
Rant over.
Rand Paul is so odorous he deserves no mention. But I’m going to give him a JMHO anyway.
Rand Paul has a smell of corruption about him now. He is no longer a voice in the wilderness.
He IS the wilderness. Corruption is it’s own wilderness. Collectively, a desolation with the destructive force of a Force 10 hurricane, it destroys anything good in its path.
“Republicans do not simply snatch defeat from the jaws of victory; they sell defeat to the highest bidder!”
Thanks for the clarification Sundance!
