The person at the check-out took one look, laughed, and said . . . “Guns, Cars, geopolitics . . .” guess we know what your political preferences are . . .” To which I replied, “Yep, liberty and freedom!”

Mostly watched college football yesterday, but I flipped over in the 11 th in time to watch the go ahead hone run and stayed for the game ending double play. They sure know how to keep things interesting. Letting the game tying and winning runs on base then shutting them down.

A little military history.
Richard (Dick) Bong surpassed WW I Ace Eddie Rickenbacker’s record for kills becoming America’s Ace of Aces. Bong was sent home to receive the CMH.
At that time another pilot was so close behind that he was grounded temporarily. The Brass feared that Tommy McGuire would also break Rickenbacker’s record before Bong could receive his medal and well earned accolades.
Neither pilot survived the war. Both died in aircraft crashes resulting from situations close to the ground.
Bong was never sent back to combat. He was made a test pilot. He was test flying an early version of what would become Americas first operational front line jet fighter. Shortly after takeoff a puff of black smoke was seen from the jet engine, immediately there after Bong ejected. The aircraft blew up before Bong was clear but even if he had gotten clear he had ejected too low for his chute to open before hitting the ground.
Tommy never broke Bong’s record. Leading a flight they had just taken off. Their P-38’s were heavy carrying full drop tanks. While still low and slow the flight was bounced by a Japanese Ace, Akira Sugimoto, one of the few to survive the war. Sugimoto went after a neophyte in Bong’s flight. Tommy turned hard low and slow to try and save this pilot and his aircraft stalled and crashed into the jungle. Perhaps if he had jettisoned his two full drop tanks he could have pulled it off. Nobody knows why he didn’t.
Both Bong and McGuire made their records flying the P-38 Lightning against the Japanese. Both received CMH. They’re names remain #1 and #2 on the list of American aces. The fact is those are confirmed kills. Every pilot that flew with them that has written or commented in histories say they each had many more kills than those on the record.

In my view, having read many books in which those two men were described there is little to choose between them as pilots. Both were excellent. However IMO, Bong was a good leader, but Tommy McGuire was a great leader.

In the annals of jet fighter development, they don’t often speak of the American efforts. British, Soviet and even Japanese efforts are discussed more often.
America often brought successful fighter pilots back and usually used them to help train the beginners to higher levels.
Japan is often criticized for not doing so. Admiral McCain wrote about how the quality of Japanese pilots was decreasing as the fight for the Solomons dragged on. And by the Marianis Turkey Shoot, they couldn’t keep up.
But I had a realization concerning the outcome of the Battle of the Coral Sea. The Japs lost a light carrier, had a fleet carrier heavily damaged, and the flight units of both fleet carriers were wiped out. (We lost a fleet carrier and had another heavily damaged.) Those two fleet carriers were not available for Midway. Our damaged carrier was available, changing the planned fight from a 6 to 4 advantage to a 4 to 3, helping us achieve 1 loss to their 4 lost fleet carriers.
By the Marianis Turkey Shoot, they had scrounged together enough carriers to almost reach their prewar total but they hadn’t given them enough training. (And our planes were better able to fight their planes.) The excuse that was often given was that they didn’t have the fuel to fly for training.
The realization was that they knew back in May of 42 that the war was going to cause heavy losses amongst their pilots. When the navy had similar fuel problems they put the ships in ports near the fuel. Why not move flight training to the fuel?
Not having competent pilots made it a lot easier to order them to commit suicide as opposed to ordering them to die in droves trying to do the job they no longer are trained to do. And that vastly increased the damage they could do.
But one is a policy of trying to win, and the other is a move of desperation in trying not to lose. It is one of the many contradictions that I just can’t fathom in how the Japanese conducted themselves.
Concerning the decline in Japanese air power.
Japan began the war with the most highly trained pilots in Naval Aviation but they lost that advantage by the end of the first year of the war.

WE ARE FIGHTING A SPIRITUAL WAR OF GOOD VERSUS EVIL
PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.

This is explaining that our ego must die. Ego is the false self we project to this world.

2 real good baseball teams, both doing everything they can to persevere through multiple adversities to earn victory.
Watched it.
The final outcome was uncertain all game long – and became a tied score after 9 hard fought innings, one pitch, one miss or hit at a time ( within the sports rules )
There was a lot of close calls by umpires ( literally a game of inches )
– and video replay affirmed the umps calls.
The home Toronto team of game 7 had the lead for the whole game going into the 9th inning – and the crowd was ready to erupt in victory.
Both teams were running on empty on pitchers since game 5 was 18 innings ( 2 games long )
Both teams kept working, mind and body – its the last game of the season… each pitch, each bat swing, each ball in play, each runner on base mattered.
The road team Dodgers got their first lead in the game, in the 11th inning…
( battling, within the rules of the game )
The home Toronto team loaded the bases in the 11th inning… all ready to score, a lot… they needed at least one to cross home plate…and they had 2 outs to spare…
The home crowd was ready to be very, very jubilant…
It was far far from easy…The road Dodgers team then silenced the home crowd , by getting a game ending, a pitch that broke a Toronto bat…and a double play, 2 outs
to hold the Dodgers 1 run lead…
As Yogi Berra said, (yogi-isms)

That was the case.
Easier said, than done.
LA may have a parade on Monday.
Toronto may be thinking it over…. what if…

Evening Prayer For Forgiveness
Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me through this day and Lord, forgive me for the times when I have wandered outside Your best will for me, instead of trusting You implicitly.
Thank You, that You are such a gracious Shepherd to me and that You come and rescue me even when I lose my way and stray from the path that You have laid out for me.
As I look back over today, I know Lord that there were things that I should have said and done differently, and times when I reacted in a manner that was not honouring Your holy name. Forgive me I pray, but thank You, Father, that You always faithfully prepared to gently bring me back to Yourself.
Give me a good night’s sleep I pray, knowing that there is no condemnation because I am in Christ, and may I wake up in the morning refreshed and ready to do Your will. In Jesus’ name I pray,

Heavenly Father, as I lie down to sleep tonight, I pray that You would guard my sleeping and protect my mind from wandering thoughts and unnecessary planning. Teach me to wait for Your perfect timing and not to try to plan my future in my own strength.
Lord, I know that You have scheduled every day of my life. Help me to trust You in all things and rely on You to lead me along the straight path and guide me in the direction that You would have me to go.
Give me patience to wait for Your perfect timing, and may I not trust in my own abilities and scheming, but rather rest in Your love and trust my future into Your hands.
And so now Lord, I commit this night to you, asking that I would rest soundly and wake refreshed and strong to do Your bidding. This I ask in Jesus’ precious name,

Prayer Of Thanksgiving In The Evening
Praise Your holy name Heavenly Father, for granting yet another day in my life and for being with me every step of the way. Thank You for the many blessings that You have provided and the love and fellowship that I have with the friends and family that in Your grace You have placed in my life.
My heart is so thankful for all the many blessings that I enjoy day by day, and today I am once again reminded that Your mercies are new every morning and Your faithfulness endures from generation to generation.
Thank You, that I have been brought into Your family and have been made a child of God and a citizen of heaven. Words cannot express my love and devotion to You Lord
I pray that You would watch over me as I rest tonight, and that You would give me a restful nights sleep so that I may wake up in the morning refreshed in body and spirit and ready to do Your will. Guard all those that I love and may we all grow in grace and in a knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ in the days that lie ahead. This I ask in His precious name,

A Nation of Saints
It was January, freezing cold, wet, and gray. Inside the meetinghouse, the whole village gathered for Rev. Samuel Parris’s sermon. In the front row sat his daughter, Betty, eight, and his twelve-year-old niece, Abigail Williams. Both were pale and sleepless, dark circles under their eyes. Their dresses were neat, their posture stiff, but a nervous energy clung to them, as though at any moment they might collapse into one of the fits that had lately begun to trouble them.
In the back row sat Tituba, the Barbadian servant who cared for the girls while Mrs. Parris lay ill again. The congregation shifted uneasily on the hard benches. Some whispered prayers against the Devil; others waited almost eagerly for a convulsion to break the monotony of winter and sermon alike. All eyes fixed on the girls, and they knew it.
It was a small, tense world contained in a single wooden room: the godly and the unfree, the fearful and the curious. Outside, rain turned the lanes to black mud. Inside, the storm gathering in Salem had already begun.
Salem’s people did not think of themselves as cruel. They were devout, literate, and convinced they lived in covenant with God, that their survival depended on their collective faithfulness. Sin was contagion; any corruption could draw divine wrath. When a home burned or a harvest failed, they saw warning, not chance. And they searched for someone to blame.
