According to the internal memoranda [SEE HERE], OMB Director Russ Vought is planning for a large-scale reduction in force (RIF), with many of the federal employees released being terminated permanently.
The Democrat triggered “govt shut down” plays nicely into the plans of President Trump and OMB Director Vought. Democrats hope they have a politically advantageous position to take in shutting down the government; however, the position of Trump and Vought is to downsize government. The shutdown expedites the downsizing.
President Trump was asked about the scope impact to federal employees, during a brief impromptu press availability, as he departs the White House going to Quantico. WATCH:

How about targeting those federal employees represented by SEIU ?
Which ones might that be. AFGE is the only union I know of
The union is gone. We’ve seen a lot of iffy employees quit in the last month so they didn’t get fired.
The National Association of Government Employees (NAGE), an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), represents over 75,000 federal employees.
These workers serve across various agencies and departments
Thanks, I never knew SEIU had any power with federal employees.
NAGE is a branch of SEIU that represents many federal state and local workers.
Yes, federal government workers are represented by SEIU, particularly through the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE), which focuses on various public service roll.
A Communist global union representing Americans in the federal government what should have never been allowed.
And the executive service something or other that ozero created via EO.
As much as I hate to disagree, it was in fact Jimmy Peanut Carter who created SES in 1979. Civil Services Reform Act?
SES is a serious deep state infestation and number one to be fired. Notice please, I did not say eliminated or done away with! Fired all of them.
Exactly, creating the SES was a huge mistake. Most are very political and impossible to get rid of
Federal employee unions (NTEU, AFGE etc) cannot bargain wages and benefits or conditions of employment. They can bargain impact and implementation of new or changed policies, but they cannot prevent them . They can file grievances and unfair labor practices. They represent union members in disciplinary actions. Managers and special agents cannot be represented. In short, eliminating the unions will make no noticeable difference. Problems with the Federal workforce lie elsewhere.
btw I thought treepers generally liked the Border Patrol Council??
Exactly! DOJ Attorneys and FBI Agents have no union representation. They have an “association” which speaks for them and lobbies Congress.
This Treeper doesn’t like the NBPC. Being in an adversarial, politically charged occupation, BPA’s definitely need to be in some sort of union or association, and have representation. Lots of bogus allegations from the aliens and the public. But sadly, the NBPC union management is worse than the actual management, and has t hasn’t had the best interests of the rank and file in mind for years.
Practically every fight they fight is to get more bennies and privileges for Union officers. Good riddance to Brandon Judd!
The union is only good for retaining poor employees who would be fired in the real world. Good employees don’t need union representation. AFGE is gone at least, and I’m thankful.
You are the only commenter besides myself who has made this point, here. A lot of people think federal employee unions can go on strike like teachers or police or firemen might in a state or local government.
Not so.
Ask PATCO.
SEIU would be representing janitors and custodial workers mostly in the VA Hospitals and prisons! Not really sure it’s getting the impact you want.
edited,
Ideally just ban government employee unions altogether. They already have civil service protections, so why do they need a union?
What federal employees does SEIU represent?
Please give examples.
Look beyond the Employee lay-offs .
If the people are gone … the agency or office where they worked IS NO LONGER NEEDED. This would be another major source of savings and shut down.
Transfer the tasks and funds to another Agency … or do a total removal due to redundancy.
In 2017, Charles Payne was interviewing President Trump’s Budget Team to discuss the Balanced Budget Proposal submitted by the President to the Ryan and McConnell Controlled Congress …. which was ignored by them as “politically unfeasible”. A huge part of the reductions found by the President’s Team was out right Redundancy …. as well as line items within inactive activities that were STILL FUNDED by Congress as those lines created piggy banks to be raided via reprogramming. Plus, the President’s Team exposed that there is an AUTOMATIC 10%+ INCREASE written into most funding lines (Just in case there are issues setting up a budget the next Fiscal year. These AUTO Increases are then preserved by the Continuing Resolutions (CR’s) we have seen the last 17 YEARS.)
In 2025 DOGE found the same as well as identified Fraud, Waste and Abuse.
By “removing” the Agency or Office … There is NO need for rehiring those fired today.
DOGE has identified:
Redundancy
INACTIVE Projects and Budget Lines still funded
Fraud, Waste and Abuse
Pork Projects serving NO Purpose
Then there are
COVID National Emergency Lines … no longer needed
Stuff for the Ukraine
State Projects violating Federal Law and Presidential EO’s
State Projects NOT producing (i.e. The CA Rapid Rail project)
Allot of stuff to take out before even getting close to something useful.
Where are the rescission bills to encode DOGEs $200 Billion in suggested cuts?
One was inked for $9 Billion, and a judge has challenged it. (See more comments below.)
True but during a “shut down” the President is obligated and authorized to run the Government within the limits of cash available and revenues …. so he gets to make those DOGE reductions … no matter the judge said before the “shut down”.
Would like to see the budget cuts to the Federal JUDCIARY, don’t have an infinite amount of clerks to accept ALL law fare filings….make the Judges do the work as opposed to employees funded by Executive Officer….cut all Fed depts down to only the prioritised ‘work’ can be done, not ‘everything’…no voicemail….you have to answer your own phone…
There isn’t a downside to shrinking the government by shedding unnecessary employees no matter how it is accomplished.
Exactly Lorraine, we have way more govmt than the taxpayers need. Govmt usually protects their territory…bill
Admin would you please look into why all of my comments are put into “awaiting approval”?
I am completely unaware of how I have violated any guidelines.
Thank you for your assistance.
It’s been doing that to me for over a year. Never commented much, but sort of made it seem pointless to do. I just chalked it up to all the spammers and bots these poor guys have to deal with. Figured better to be on the porch in silence than not at all.

Wait………. never mind.
Finally get to drain that swamp a bit
You think the Dems will allow this? They won’t shut down
This is so great! This is what I wanted for Christmas and I dont need anything else, but I will stand for even more winning!! Still not tired of winning.
Keep going President Trump! MAGA!
Think of that…a Federal Government ‘MAKING A PROFIT’…..paying down the debt w the surplus…..not rolling over all expiring Federal TBills & TBonds….paying out say “20%” of new Import Duties revenue to reduce Federal Taxes a US taxpayer owes in a year……
‘Mr Mogambo, the 2025 new Federal Import Tariff tax receipts created a credit toward your 2025 taxes due…..instead of paying $75,000 in taxes, we can issue a credit of $18,000….do you want a cash refund, or apply it toward next years taxes?
And below another reason for a reduction in force.
In the 2024 election cycle, 69.5% of federal employee donations went to Democrats and 30.5% to Republicans, with notable agency variations such as the Department of Education which was 100% to Democrats.
Oddly there was a variance for presidential candidates with 84% of donations ($3.5 million out of $4.2 million total) went to Kamala Harris, while 16% went to Donald Trump.
FR, and probably the best reason of all!
Democrats will claim Social Security Services and anything childcare related will be cut first.
Reagan’s 1996 Line Item Veto Act (nixed by SCOTUS, 6-3) rises again.
Wasn’t it Clinton…after Newt passed it as part of The Contract with America?
Oops. Right. I think Reagan proposed it in 1986, but it never actually got passed until 1996.
Dems will.not.shutdown
I agree. At the last minute they will cave. Republicans better not offer then a lifeline!!
Agree … but the life line may have already been offered by our so supportive Republican Congress critters. //sarc
The democrats never do or say anything that does not an ulterior objective ….. i.e. Renewal of the ACA Subsidies, which does not come due until December 2025 … alongside an actual CR that preserves everything put into the budget since 2009 … an NO budget created by regular order, which not a single Congress Critter of any party would dare support.
Trump should go to bed early and silence his phone.
smitty…president Donald J Trump……
If the GOP accepts anything but the clean CR the House already passed, it would be just another sign that they are pure Uniparty.
House is not even in town. So any “deal” for other than the clean CR they passed 2 weeks ago CAN’T get done in under a couple days.
The Senate is chock full of RINO Uniparty tools. They are probably pressuring Thune to cave….and Thune’s DNA actually WANTS to cave.
Guess we’ll see what happens!
Congress is the Uni-Party NOW.
NO …. a CR just preserves the disaster …. there should only be ONE CHOICE …. operate in “shut down mode” until a “CLEAN BILL” negotiated based on the Budget Proposal submitted (by law) to Congress by the President in March 2025 is Passed in Regular Order and Signed into law.
At least in “shut down mode” … expenditures have to equal income.
That is the only way to kill off anything and everything put into the Budget and Preserved by Congress 2009-2025 via CR’s.
Although, Senator Thune has pleasantly surprised us here at CTH a few times recently. Could it happen again?
Wrong….no TACO again..
Please let the shut-down happen.
Lay off the 10,000 who have access to the NSA Database.
The spying on Americans has only escalated. You can read it all in the post Sundance just put up.
They did not stop illegal spying they increased it.
I think they need their privacy invaded and then imprisoned.
Peter Theil is a major donator to PDJT, IIRC. His Palantir software is surveillance on steroids.
Add 150,000 from the worthless FBI,CIA & DOJ.
So, if I understand this correctly, shutdowns have protected over the past 17 years(thanks thedoc00), the pork, waste, fraud and abuse, and been used as a tool against the current President(s) as they had no power over the UniParty machine. CR’s and no budget passed since Bush 43.
This time, evil bad OrangeMandRumpf will turn the tables on them and use the shutdown for a massive federal workforce reduction, kind of an end around way to get things moving because they refuse to put the senate in recess(never allowed with Trump 45 or 47)?
May the republican demands ensure that the Dem’s vote for the shutdown!
hear! hear!
Exactly … anything else but a Spending Authorization Act passed during regular order, per the law, and then sign by the President preserves ALL the crap.
It’ too bad that Thune and even Johnson are BS-ing US with some sort of CR to stay open. It is NOT needed. If the Republicans were really serious (and they are NOT), they have two choices …. change the House and Senate Rules and ram through a proper spending Authorization Act for the President to sign (which resets everything for future CR’s that WILL 100% Occur to this Budget Act ….. or ….. wuss out, stay shut down and let the President Govern under “shut down fiscal rules” until a proper Authorization Act is passed (even this resets what is covered by a future CR).
I hope the President is able to hold out for the SHUT DOWN. It is will be the only opportunity for the President to exploit the stupidity of the Uni-Party on the government spending front. The Democrats and Republicans will not repeat this mistake. Although, with the democrats threatening violence and a repeat of their legal revenge 2020-2025 ON ALL Republicans … just maybe the Republicans decide physical survival is a good thing, to stay the course with the President.
The phrases “Schumer Shutdown” or the “Jefferies’ Jamboree” properly set the tone for the clusterbuck on DC’s door. I’m glad DJT has the cogli0nes to call their bluff.
That was a fun video!
Just in time to send them to the pumpkin patch to get some picking done.
Never let a good crisis go to waste. 😉
The more the better and no reason to bring at least a third to half of them back. Start with Biden’s 87,000 Armed IRS agents. Then onto district court judges.
Someone on Titter was pointing out that even IF they have to rehire people after the shutdown…they can basically hire their own people in to counter all the lawfare and prog rot that’s been infesting the bureaucracy for so long. So it’s win-win. I can’t believe the DNC can’t see that they will lose badly if they let this shutdown go forward. Or maybe the crazies are too far off the rails that they can’t prevent it at this point.
Schumer saved them from that disaster last time. They hated him for that. He is now trying to appease them to save his seat from AOC, which isn’t going to work. You see Schumur’s priorities are his power first, his party second and the US way down the list.
The Democrats only policy is ‘oppose Trump’. They are being really stupid, but that’s good for Trump.
The issue is that a lot of these jobs are in DC and normal people don’t want to live there. I
had the option of moving there and getting a cushy GS-13 job after I left the military… nope, I chose almost a year of unemployment in my home state instead. Forcing FBI agents to re-locate to DC to keep their jobs was how Obama facilitated a great deal of the purge at that agency. The National Guard can’t keep full time military positions staffed because nobody wants to be in DC. And on and on.
DC is a snake pit. High crime, horrific dating scene, long commutes with insane traffic, high rent, not family friendly and notoriously left-wing.
The only way to fix the federal government is to break up these agencies and scatter them across the country to places where normal people do want to live.
It may not be the only way to fix our govmt, however, break up agencies and redistribute across the country would be better for taxpayers…bill
Amen. A friend in the military reserves was offered a high paying job in DC metro.
He wound up turning it down after trying to make a go commuting between Gwinnett
County and DC for 6 months. He was renting a short term lease 1 bedroom at the Watergate,
and the rent was 500 more a month then the note on his 4 bedroom home in a nice subdivision
back home.
He knew that he would be losing money if he moved his family. So he quit. And wound up
moving to South Carolina to escape being at the Dekalb/ Gwinnett border.
Please please no.
Anywhere you relocate/establish a federal agency, you will create a blue enclave that will metastasize and grow.
DC, Md and N. Va are gone forever. Quarantine and contain the disease. Don’t let it spread.
They can’t let people go then rehire others to replace them unless they have a legitimate reason to let the original workers go. The OMB has criteria for RIF. And there are agreements with federal unions. RIF means there’s a legitimate reason to let someone go permanently.
1. Why are they slow walking more rescission packages after the $9 Billion cut? The legal challenge, or worried about a recession?
2. There’s about $190 billion of identified DOGE cuts to still encode.
3. DOGEs goal was refined downward to $1 Trillion in cuts – are they still digging in?
The tariff monies are great, but we must reduce spending. If not now, when?
Kill it all … take the shut down and hold out for a Budget Passed properly. Anything else preserves the past crap for the Future CR’s that WILL occur.
Congress doesn’t want to cut anything, even the DOGE recommendations. Even the so called “Republicans” are happy with $2 trillion per year deficits until the currency is debased to the point of hyperinflation.
He’ll lay people off and some liberal judge will give them their jobs back. At this point, I’ll be happy if the people who are laid off and furloughed with this government shutdown aren’t given back pay for their time off. Sorry for the cynicism.
A cynicism base in the reality of seeing it played over and over. You remind me of me.
I looked and district judges get shutdown after approximately two weeks depending on money they have set aside in reserve in preparation of a shutdown.
I think Trump does not have to start up all districts after the shutdown but can eliminate some. It will be interesting to see if the Democrats are willing to push the shutdown past two weeks.

Gotta clone this guy
The Federal Government has about 2.5 MILLION, Non-Uniformed, Employees.
250,000 let go is only 10% … do the math from there.
Ah, but which 10%, he could, as some commentators have suggested, remove top tiers critical to the DS’ continued weaponisation programme. I think Schumer’s actually being quite clever here, because by acquiescing to the AOC wing’s ludicrous demands that will inevitably trigger a shutdown he’s laying the blame for the forthcoming events squarely at her feet.
Remember, one of the reasons the Democrats have been so singularly ineffective as a voice of opposition to Trump’s Presidency is that the party has been involved in a civil war since before the election. A government shutdown caused by a wish list of policies rejected by the American people, less than a year ago, is just another indicator of the turmoil in the party, which is increasingly harder for their MSM cronies to conceal or deflect.
No argument from me.
I was just pointing out the numbers to folks …. for them to be scaled up or down to see if dent in the problem was even made.
10% is not even a dent.
presstitute media w all their drama queens r already pushing the fear porn, claiming unemployment could hit 4.7%… blah, blah, blah
it’s a fantabulous way to clean house of the lazy, lifer democrat bureaukrauts!
SHUT IT DOWN!
The EV tax credit also expires at midnight.
Great catch!
A win-win
The most vulnerable are those in discretionary, non-statutory roles not aligned with Trump’s priorities, often in agencies previously targeted for realignments in 2025.
While political leanings aren’t explicit criteria, agencies with historically Democratic-leaning staff (e.g., 80-99% donations to Democrats in 2024) overlap heavily with above sectors.
Policy analysts, grant administrators, and bureaucrats in agencies like EPA (environmental regs), Department of Education (grant processing), and HUD (housing assistance verifications, NIH researchers, CDC prevention staff, FDA inspectors (non-emergency), HHS mental health/pharma roles; HUD voucher administrators, EPA inspectors/enforcers (deregulation), Interior land management/wildlife staff (Interior preparing significant RIFs); NOAA climate researchers in Commerce, Department of Education Department of Energy, renewables, climate efficiency/grant workers; USDA rural development/inspection staff (non-food safety), Department of State domestic staff, Transportation non-safety roles are all possibly facing cuts.
NIH research is invaluable. In January of 2024, an extensive article was published with regard to a certain drug repurposed to treat cancer. I won’t mention the drug here so as not to provide medical advice, but many here know it used to be available OTC. It recently became available OTC in Texas, if that helps. I do not want to see the NIH online research library defunded. Articles addressing alternative methods of healing are just too valuable to fall by the wayside, especially given the distrust many have of the established medical profession.
Government Dysfunction
This is just another of many examples of our Government Dysfunction- has little to do with solving the problems we face as a country.
Maybe we just don’t have a government to represent us as originally intended. It’s all focused on government and not the people which is a flip of the the original intention of our Republic.
They make the laws that protect them from lying, and protecting themselves from enriching themselves, unlawfully, for their own self-serving interest. And we just keep voting them in and sending our tax money to support their interests.
Maybe we do need a Constitutional Convention to protest us from these Self-Serving criminals
No, CC, the democrats would run it and rewrite the constitution to suit the crazies.
My hunch is if 300,000 federal employees get fired, nobody outside government will notice a thing.
If receiving declining service from a federal agency is the “standard” with layoffs, how would you notice a deteriorating customer service response from what has always been a bunch of lazy deadbeats? There are usually just two speeds you would encounter even with full employment …”Slow” and “Stop.”
the fed govt employs abt 2.5 mil…. 300,00 doesn’t begin to make a dent in removing lifer bureaukrauts…
First of all, take off the ridiculous two-party glasses. There are no two parties. Now put on your Uniparty glasses and you see the real picture. This is all political theater. There is only one party, the Uniparty, with actors pretending to be ‘right wing’ and ‘leftwing.’ It is all about money. Behind closed doors, these ‘actors’ are ruthless and cunning and all about wheeling and dealing money. A lot of that money ends up in their pockets and connected friends and businesses.
“One party can’t fool all of the people, all of the time. That is why there are two parties” – Bob Hope
They’re are 1/2 the Republican politicians pretending to be right wing, but to my knowledge, no Democrat politicians pretending to be left wing. They are 150% left wing and not pretending one bit.
I prefer to see the EPA and the Corps environmental folks to be trimmed back, substantially.
As a civil engineer (well, mostly civil), I have had to suffer their gradual grasping accumulation of onerous regulations for years.
Word for the day:
The word Untermensch is a German term meaning “subhuman” or “underman,” which was extensively used by Nazi Germany to dehumanize and designate as inferior groups they considered undesirable.
Interesting…Our American Nazis use terms like “deplorable” to designate those they deem “inferior”.
That too.
Aw Shucks…at the last moment. 😛
Senate in Session:
https://www.senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm
The Schumer shutdown doesn’t even have majority support of Democrats.
Thune has to move to take the vote on the CR. At that point, Schumer has to decide whether or not to filibuster the motion to proceed to a vote.
If he backs off, then it goes to a vote, and will pass.
If he “invokes cloture”, then the cloture vote has to happen, and it will need 60 votes to pass. It is possible that enough Dems will buck Schumer and vote for cloture — whereupon the Senate will then vote on the CR.
If it doesn’t get 60 votes, then the CR won’t be voted on, and government shuts down.
My prediction is that Schumer will blink, and not even invoke cloture.
That would be a darn shame. If President Trump had feigned the slightest concern at the prospect of a government shutdown maybe we could have gotten rid of all that dead wood.

I don’t think PT is bluffing, but Democrats shouldn’t budge an inch, either.
Either way, a lot of people are going to lose a lot of things leading up to 2026.
I have no issues with PT speedwalking things. At this point, people need to experience the pain.
“FAFO”
Which is more dehumanizing?
To call federal employees leaches, parasites or Unermensch?
It’s only dehumanizing if it’s coming from people who are not working, themselves, and who are taking more from the government than contributing.
its a job . most people working there only hate you because of the hiring preferences. not the job
It’s after midnight. Just call them “Unemployed.”
Unemployment unessentials. Nice to put on a resume.

Now would be an excellent time to get rid rid of the Dept of Education

Norm Eisen has already filed a lawsuit to prevent Trump and Vought from doing reductions in force: https://x.com/normeisen/status/1973122622344012033
Unfortunately he’ll get a Commie judge to agree.
There should be no “well established procedure” for a government shutdown. Congress should do its job and pass a budget annually and follow it.
The Plan is to careen the US into the ditch.
The annual grotesque overspending theater with CRs kicking the can down the road, driving the ballooning debt and chaos, is part of the Plan sinking the US by intent.
Here is another part of the Plan:

The whole point is they care more about illegals than they do about We The People.
If politicians were targeted to be assassinated by illegals we would have had the most secure borders in the world the last 40 years.
Instead the victims have been those of us that have had pay taxes to provide clothes, food, phones, healthcare, subsidized rent, free education, pay for their incarcerations and also suffer at the hands of their criminal acts.
They deserve to have this thrown in their face.
Trump didn’t post nor repost that. It’s a parody account.

“We [the Dems] want to save healthcare for all people.” But what’s the point if many people can’t afford it? Not talking illegals here. Talking about just everyday American citizens. How about this, Maxine — every American citizen gets the same quality of healthcare provided to you as a congresswoman. You and your 500+ colleagues. I don’t think you’ll ever have to mortgage one of your homes or file for bankruptcy to pay off medical bills.

He makes his livin’ off of the people’s taxes

US government shuts down after Senate Democrats fail to support stopgap funding bill

“[A]ffected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown.” Vought wrote in a memo.
A House-passed bill – backed by virtually all Senate Republicans and President Trump – to keep the government open with funding at current levels until Nov. 21 failed to clear the 60-vote legislative filibuster in the upper chamber by five votes.
In his memo, Vought noted that it’s “unclear how long Democrats will maintain their untenable posture, making the duration of the shutdown difficult to predict.”
