President Trump has the interests of peace deals in view with this. But also, he’s trying to protect Israel from themselves. The sentiment in Israel right now is for taking everything they can get, regardless of how that might work out. Neither Israel’s neighbors, nor other major nations, will tolerate Israel officially annexing the West Bank. If Israel does that, it will backfire on them big time, with severe consequences for many other nations as well, first among them as far as President Trump is concerned being the United States.
Israel has been pushing the boundaries with how it has operated in Gaza. Annexation of the West Bank would be the last straw, precipitating hot war against Israel by several other nations. Israel would likely suffer significant damage to its infrastructure along with high civilian casualties, and their Samson Option might come into play. President Trump wants to prevent all that.
My aging brain seems to recall something about not mucking with the West Bank as being an integral condition to the Abraham Accords, and that has Donald Trump’s name all over it as a guarantor.
