This is often commonly interpreted literally (fundamental Christians) while metaphors and hyperboles and other figures of speech are extreme exaggeration to express the weight of the message, although it may not express the specific message : as when people say “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse”or the familiar ones most people have heard from parents who say “I’ve told you a million times”
Essentially it is a definition given by Jesus of what discipleship looks like. Loving one’s family is biblical. Loving one’s family in this sense does not make us unworthy when we do not subscribe to the opposite of what one’s family is into or be part of their wrongdoing.
Jesus also contextualizes His words about hating one’s own life. We must be willing to lose our lives on earth if we want eternal life. Luke 9:25 and specifically in Luke 12:4-5, we should not fear life-threatening religious persecution.
Verses such as this can be scary. If oversimplified, they suggest those of us unwilling to immediately give up family relationships, cannot be saved. For many of us, that’s not something we can fathom.
Another time, Jesus said ““If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away”. Does Jesus really want us to gouge out our eyes or cut off our hands?
while it is not satisfying to label this as “non-literal,” it is right to recognize that the literal (i.e., plain, natural) sense of this passage is a form of speech called hyperbole.
As hyperbole, the meaning is “that whatever hinders us from yielding that obedience to God which he requires in his law, ought to be cut off.”2 It is here, however, that Jesus is pressing us to think through what must be cut off in order to eliminate hindrances from obedience to God.
If it were possible to eliminate the sin of lust by cutting out our right eye, or by cutting off our right hand, wouldn’t that be a sensible thing to do?: “No man hesitates to have a virulently diseased part of his body amputated by the surgeon in order that he may not lose his life.”
The question, of course, is not whether we would amputate gangrenous sin before it spread to kill the whole body. The question is whether the amputation of a member of the body would effectively accomplish that goal.
Eyes and Hands Don’t Cause Sin
Gouging out our eyes and cutting off our hand would not solve our problems, since it is “quite possible to be blind or crippled and still lust. This conclusion is clear when Jesus advocates for cutting out/off only the right eye and the right hand; yet the left eye and the left hand would still be capable of leading us into sin all by themselves.
As Jesus made clear in v. 28, the problem of lust is not generated by the body, but in the heart.
John Nolland wrote this :
“But perhaps the question of literalism is not quite the right one. The challenge is to go to whatever extreme are necessary to eliminate sin. By taking up dramatic and extreme instances, the text urges such a level of seriousness about avoiding sin that there will be unrestrained commitment to use all possible means to avoid it (with no particular interest in distinguishing between strategies that relate to the inner life, the physical body, or the arrangement of the external circumstances of life). The goal is what is important here, not the means.
While it is unhelpful to label this passage as “non-literal,” it is fair to ask whether a literal application is what Jesus (literally) intends. So, when we recognize that the proposed solution would not solve the problem, we see that Jesus is making two points in a deeply profound way:
we must do everything possible to avoid sin; andbodily discipline—or even mutilation—cannot ultimately solve our problem, since the true roots of sin go all the way down into the heart.It is with the heart that Jesus insists we must deal, not the body alone.

We are to be the the light of/to the world in the darkness. God by His promise that “whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” establishes a direct link [that of following Him and living (not just talking) in spiritual clarity and eternal life].
This command to follow Him is inseparable from the command to love, as He instructed His disciples, “This I command you: love one another” , and “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another”.
Believers are called to reflect this light, being “the light of the world” and a “city on a hill” that cannot be hidden, so that others may see their good deeds and glorify their Father in heaven. Living as light is truly just embodying God’s love and truth in daily actions, walking as children of light, and shining brightly in the darkness, especially in times of struggle, to bring hope and guide others toward salvation.
A lifelong journey till each of us has run this marathon, not a sprint, but as the race is set before us – an ongoing struggle against spiritual forces of evil, personal sin, and worldly temptations when we live each day actively striving; setting aside everything that impedes our relationship with God. The focus should only be on Jesus – by maintaining that focus as the ‘author and finisher of our faith”, so to speak. Yoked to Jesus. Committed to Jesus.
Some of the never-ending argumentation over those verses result from an incomplete and thus inaccurate translation of the English word “hate” in the Greek original scriptural texts. See the term “miseo” in Greek; look it up in Strong’s.
The word translated as “hate” in English also means “love less than” – it is a ranking term, not an expression of absolute emotion.
“Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated” (Romans 9:13) in the original Greek is more like, “Jacob I loved, but Easu I loved a lot less”.
This relative-ranking meaning is even more apparent in the Hebrew language, as the following AI search reveals:

Therefore, while all people are created by God, the status of being an heir of God and a fellow heir with Christ is reserved for those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ

In my opinion, you entirely missed what USMC was saying. In sum total, without citing the verse, it boils down to John 3:16. That is how God defines a Christian, a believer, a follower of Christ. I can’t agree with you there. The Lord said, “I am the vine; you are the branches.” Christians are members of the Body of Christ, which is the blessed company of all faithful people. We have an apostolic injunction to “forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.”
You can be a Muslim or a Buddhist by yourself, but Christianity is necessarily a communal faith. We are members of the Body; branches of the True Vine. Flying from DC to New York to Utah to Arizona in one day would be possible, but on such short notice and given the logistics of moving around the VP would probably be difficult.
In any case, there is a human element here. This is a fresh and personal wound for Vance, it is natural for him to choose Utah over New York. Removing him from the New York program doesn’t mean that program will not go on, but there is no other Vice-President to comfort Kirk’s widow and children.
There’s also the security question to consider. The killer is still on the loose, probably not in New York but we have no idea who this person is and if he is part of a larger threat. It would be a fairly easy task to beef security up around the Pentagon for the President, doing the same in New York City would have been a very different matter.

It was a very classy thing for Vance to do. Politics aside there seemed to be a genuine friendship between JD and Charlie. As a compassionate human being it was the right thing for Vance to do. I still don’t feel comfortable about his financial buddies, but that’s for another day. Today Vance is being very human by honoring his friend and supporting the Kirk family. A while ago, probably in 2017, I appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox show to talk about God knows what. Afterwards a name I barely knew sent me a DM on twitter and told me I did a great job. It was Charlie Kirk, and that moment of kindness began a friendship that lasted until today.
Charlie was fascinated by ideas and always willing to learn and change his mind. Like me, he was skeptical of Donald Trump in 2016. Like me, he came to see President Trump as the only figure capable of moving American politics away from the globalism that had dominated for our entire lives. When others were right, he learned from them. When he was right–as he usually was–he was generous. With Charlie, the attitude was never, “I told you so.” But: “welcome.”
Charlie was one of the first people I called when I thought about running for senate in early 2021. I was interested but skeptical there was a pathway. We talked through everything, from the strategy to the fundraising to the grassroots of the movement he knew so well. He introduced me to some of the people who would run my campaign and also to Donald Trump Jr. “Like his dad, he’s misunderstood. He’s extremely smart, and very much on our wavelength.” Don took a call from me because Charlie asked him too.
Long before I ever committed (even in my mind) to running, Charlie had me speak to his donors at a TPUSA event. He walked me around the room and introduced me. He gave me honest feedback on my remarks. He had no reason to do this, no expectation that I’d go anywhere. I was polling, at that point, well below 5 percent. He did it because we were friends, and because he was a good man.
When I became the VP nominee–something Charlie advocated for both in public and private–Charlie was there for me. I was so glad to be part of the president’s team, but candidly surprised by the effect it had on our family. Our kids, especially our oldest, struggled with the attention and the constant presence of the protective detail. I felt this acute sense of guilt, that I had conscripted my kids into this life without getting their permission. And Charlie was constantly calling and texting, checking on our family and offering guidance and prayers. Some of our most successful events were organized not by the campaign, but by TPUSA. He wasn’t just a thinker, he was a doer, turning big ideas into bigger events with thousands of activists. And after every event, he would give me a big hug, tell me he was praying for me, and ask me what he could do. “You focus on Wisconsin,” he’d tell me. “Arizona is in the bag.” And it was.
Charlie genuinely believed in and loved Jesus Christ. He had a profound faith. We used to argue about Catholicism and Protestantism and who was right about minor doctrinal questions. Because he loved God, he wanted to understand him.
Someone else pointed out that Charlie died doing what he loved: discussing ideas. He would go into these hostile crowds and answer their questions. If it was a friendly crowd, and a progressive asked a question to jeers from the audience, he’d encourage his fans to calm down and let everyone speak. He exemplified a foundational virtue of our Republic: the willingness to speak openly and debate ideas.
Charlie had an uncanny ability to know when to push the envelope and when to be more conventional. I’ve seen people attack him for years for being wrong on this or that issue publicly, never realizing that privately he was working to broaden the scope of acceptable debate.
He was a great family man. I was talking to President Trump in the Oval Office today, and he said, “I know he was a very good friend of yours.” I nodded silently, and President Trump observed that Charlie really loved his family. The president was right. Charlie was so proud of Erika and the two kids. He was so happy to be a father. And he felt such gratitude for having found a woman of God with whom he could build a family.
Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. I am on more than a few group chats with Charlie and people he introduced me to over the years. We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other’s chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life. These group chats include people at the very highest level of our government. They trusted him, loved him, and knew he’d always have their backs. And because he was a true friend ,you could instinctively trust the people Charlie introduced you to. So much of the success we’ve had in this administration traces directly to Charlie’s ability to organize and convene. He didn’t just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government.
I was in a meeting in the West Wing when those group chats started lighting up with people telling Charlie they were praying for him. And that’s how I learned the news that my friend had been shot. I prayed a lot over the next hour, as first good news and then bad trickled in.
God didn’t answer those prayers, and that’s OK. He had other plans. And now that Charlie is in heaven, I’ll ask him to talk to big man directly on behalf of his family, his friends, and the country he loved so dearly.

I find it quite ironic – all these loving encomiums to the memories of Charlie Kirk coming from Treepers, given that most of the previous comments I’ve read here (and often read most of them) have trashed Kirk as something akin to a turncoat, bought by the Sea Islanders, and even a friend of Desantis, etc, et al, ad nauseum. Did you know he was besties with JD Vance, and responsible for his ascension to the VPOTUS; I’ve seen that spoken as a criticism too.
Turns out now that even Sundance him(her?)self has written a post of how great an intellect and skillset Kirk had.
The same could be said for how this community treats Mark Levin, who used to be anti-Trump but who is now as full-throated a MAGA man as any. Same with many others, like Ted Cruz and Tulsi Gabbard. Even some major league RINOs like Thune now sing the praises of Trump’s policies.
I was anti-Trump, pro-Cruz in the beginning and while I still wish he had the elocution of a Vance, I now love his policies. Maybe some of the fervent doubters of people they weren’t fans of at one time could now cut some slack for those now supporting Trump who did not at one time.
Kirk was a national treasure and he will be sorely missed.

However, I really disagree with you on Mark Levin. He has become unbearable to listen to. He regularly insults and derides anyone who questions our Ukraine or Israel policy. He brokers zero different opinions on these topics and sounds unhinged when discussing them. His words and his vitriol are unhelpful and definitely not full-throated MAGA. JMO.

When others were right, he learned from them. When he was right–as he usually was–he was generous. With Charlie, the attitude was never, “I told you so.” But: “welcome.”
Charlie was one of the first people I called when I thought about running for senate in early 2021. I was interested but skeptical there was a pathway. We talked through everything, from the strategy to the fundraising to the grassroots of the movement he knew so well. He introduced me to some of the people who would run my campaign and also to Donald Trump Jr. “Like his dad, he’s misunderstood. He’s extremely smart, and very much on our wavelength.” Don took a call from me because Charlie asked him too.
Long before I ever committed (even in my mind) to running, Charlie had me speak to his donors at a TPUSA event. He walked me around the room and introduced me. He gave me honest feedback on my remarks. He had no reason to do this, no expectation that I’d go anywhere. I was polling, at that point, well below 5 percent. He did it because we were friends, and because he was a good man.
When I became the VP nominee–something Charlie advocated for both in public and private–Charlie was there for me. I was so glad to be part of the president’s team, but candidly surprised by the effect it had on our family. Our kids, especially our oldest, struggled with the attention and the constant presence of the protective detail. I felt this acute sense of guilt, that I had conscripted my kids into this life without getting their permission. And Charlie was constantly calling and texting, checking on our family and offering guidance and prayers. Some of our most successful events were organized not by the campaign, but by TPUSA. He wasn’t just a thinker, he was a doer, turning big ideas into bigger events with thousands of activists. And after every event, he would give me a big hug, tell me he was praying for me, and ask me what he could do. “You focus on Wisconsin,” he’d tell me. “Arizona is in the bag.” And it was.
Charlie genuinely believed in and loved Jesus Christ. He had a profound faith. We used to argue about Catholicism and Protestantism and who was right about minor doctrinal questions. Because he loved God, he wanted to understand him.
Someone else pointed out that Charlie died doing what he loved: discussing ideas. He would go into these hostile crowds and answer their questions. If it was a friendly crowd, and a progressive asked a question to jeers from the audience, he’d encourage his fans to calm down and let everyone speak. He exemplified a foundational virtue of our Republic: the willingness to speak openly and debate ideas.
Charlie had an uncanny ability to know when to push the envelope and when to be more conventional. I’ve seen people attack him for years for being wrong on this or that issue publicly, never realizing that privately he was working to broaden the scope of acceptable debate.
He was a great family man. I was talking to President Trump in the Oval Office today, and he said, “I know he was a very good friend of yours.” I nodded silently, and President Trump observed that Charlie really loved his family. The president was right. Charlie was so proud of Erika and the two kids. He was so happy to be a father. And he felt such gratitude for having found a woman of God with whom he could build a family.
Charlie Kirk was a true friend. The kind of guy you could say something to and know it would always stay with him. I am on more than a few group chats with Charlie and people he introduced me to over the years. We celebrate weddings and babies, bust each other’s chops, and mourn the loss of loved ones. We talk about politics and policy and sports and life. These group chats include people at the very highest level of our government. They trusted him, loved him, and knew he’d always have their backs. And because he was a true friend ,you could instinctively trust the people Charlie introduced you to. So much of the success we’ve had in this administration traces directly to Charlie’s ability to organize and convene. He didn’t just help us win in 2024, he helped us staff the entire government.
I was in a meeting in the West Wing when those group chats started lighting up with people telling Charlie they were praying for him. And that’s how I learned the news that my friend had been shot. I prayed a lot over the next hour, as first good news and then bad trickled in.
God didn’t answer those prayers, and that’s OK. He had other plans. And now that Charlie is in heaven, I’ll ask him to talk to big man directly on behalf of his family, his friends, and the country he loved so dearly.

I don’t blame him from skipping the 9/11 ceremonies. New Yorkers are weeks away from betraying the memory of those lost on 9/11. It only took them 24 years to surrender NYC to an Islamic marxist who believes in a global intifada without a shot being fired.
For the benefit of Mr. Kirk’s wife and children, keep all haters away from memorial services and his funeral!
