Once again, the narratives of the professional fake-news media collapse.
For several days the media has been saying the Trump administration FBI targeted John Bolton, hence the FBI raid on his home and office. However, the New York Times now outlines how the investigation into John Bolton began during the Biden administration and picked up speed after they received access to his email information from an “adversarial country’s spy service.”
Apparently, John Bolton used an unclassified email system to send information to his friends and allies. The emails were intercepted. Bolton was discussing information that appears to have been the outcome of his access to classified information as National Security Advisor.
CTH has previously outlined how John Bolton’s business model was essentially selling information and influence. This common DC business model seems to have formed the baseline for him to share sensitive, possibly classified information, of greater value. This does not come as a surprise.
Selling information is the currency of affluence in Washington DC. That’s why the removal of security clearances is looked upon as devastating within the beltway. New York Times story below:
NEW YORK TIMES – The investigation into President Trump’s former national security adviser, John R. Bolton, began to pick up momentum during the Biden administration, when U.S. intelligence officials collected information that appeared to show that he had mishandled classified information, according to people familiar with the inquiry.
The United States gathered data from an adversarial country’s spy service, including emails with sensitive information that Mr. Bolton, while still working in the first Trump administration, appeared to have sent to people close to him on an unclassified system, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive case that remains open.
The emails in question, according to the people, were sent by Mr. Bolton and included information that appeared to derive from classified documents he had seen while he was national security adviser. Mr. Bolton apparently sent the messages to people close to him who were helping him gather material that he would ultimately use in his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened.”
In a sign of the stakes for Mr. Bolton, he is in talks to retain the high-profile criminal defense lawyer Abbe Lowell. Mr. Lowell, who has represented Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Mr. Biden’s son Hunter, is defending two other prominent perceived enemies of Mr. Trump who are now under scrutiny: the New York state attorney general, Letitia James, and Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board. At the time of the raid, we noted the activity of Bolton mirrors that of former Senator John McCain (now dead). “An FBI investigation under the auspices of potential violations of the Espionage Act, where Bolton would have leveraged current or prior classified intelligence information as part of his influence business.
Almost identically to former Senator John McCain, John Bolton was well known to intersect with the nation of Qatar as part of his operation. Qatar has deep pockets and a long-identified influence operation throughout the Middle East, sometimes playing both sides. Qatar is also the playground for the CIA.
While it is yet unknown which nation and which activity Bolton was likely engaged in, the highest probability centers around the deepest pockets, which would also put Bolton on the CIA radar.

A glitch of mine, remembering those gigantic Elephant Seals as Walrus – I went to look up on the computer to see how the Walrus are doing and they don’t even mention Walrus and so it must be the Elephant Seals which I recall. Ordinary “SMTP/POP” email is absolutely open. Your message is sent in the clear to a network of “MTAs = Mail Transfer Agents,” each one of which might make a copy of the message and very likely does. Other e-mail services such as Microsoft Exchange are designed differently, but none are cleared for classified information. (Remember that, Hillary …)
I purposely never sought a job that required any sort of security clearance, but I remember stories told by some of my friends who did. How they put “the fear of God” into you, telling you that someone was always watching. Also informing you that you always had correct technical means to communicate available to you, and that you’d damned well better use only those means. My friends didn’t go to bars much, and when they did they were very careful about exactly how much they drank, and exactly who they talked to. If “work” came up, they’d shut up or change the subject. Because a violation could mean 20 years or more.
Let Mr. Bolton and Mrs. Clinton both find that out for themselves. “Of those to whom much is given, much is required.”
Incidentally, this justified paranoia about security is why I never believed the story that Cabinet members were using a commercial, non-government messaging system in which a reporter “happened” to be on the call. I knew that this story was “not as it seemed” – and, to his credit, I wager that the journalist and magazine in question did, too. The government – especially at high levels – has a large staff devoted to information security. They can provide truly secure communications to any Cabinet member: anytime, anywhere, right now. They will monitor the communication for security throughout, and provide a classified transcript to all participants.
I can personally vouch for the fact they will test you in a pubic setting to see what you will or will not say. The thing was, the two AFOSI “agents” were do obvious in what they were trying to pump out of my buddies and I that we laughed about it for days.
We were always on high alert when in public. Shop talk stayed at the base.

P.S.: It is possible to use “plug-ins” on an email program to provide message signing (prevents tampering and forgery), and secure encryption (prevents disclosure). But both parties in question must use it, and properly manage their cryptographic key certificates. (Public key methods are used, like those used to secure “https” web-sites like this one.) You secure the content before handing it over to the (insecure …) mail system for delivery.
Oddly enough, “web mail” systems like gmail.com once provided this service, but they removed it . . .
There are at least two industry standards: “S/MAIL,” and “PGP® or GPG.” Both can be used with confidence if correctly set up. They integrate into the e-mail software so that you can basically ignore what’s being done. Validation and decryption occurs automatically upon receipt, and the message is stored on your system (and theirs …) in encrypted form. “It Just Works.™”
As noted, other available email systems work differently. Some do provide built-in security, tamper prevention, and provenance.
But none of them are suitable for classified information.

If you’re a politico or high ranking D.C. official you are held to very loose standards, hence why these process violations keep occurring at scale with little to no consequences e.g. Biden, Swallwell, Schiff, McCain, Bolton, Clinton, etc, etc, etc… tThere are probably only a couple of handfuls of members of Congress that would clear the background check for a TS or higher level of clearance.
The hammer will be dropped on all others for the most meager of violations with impunity. Additionally, they use the threat of removing your clearance as currency over your behavior if you don’t meet the aforementioned hierarchy.

Go back and look at his funeral and the American Flag draped on his coffin.. Look closely, the flag is not crisp and neat. It is wrinkled and would not be that way for a genuine, good military and good senator. In my humble opinion, I don’t think he had a real honorable funeral and burial, it was all a show and I think that is why his daughter is so bitter. Like I said, it is my humble opinion only. I have nothing concrete to base it on, just the wrinkled flag draped on his coffin.

Absolutely no reason to have access to government classified info once you leave your government post.
Access is supposed to be linked to a job requirement. No job requirement requiring access, then no access. That does not mean your clearance has to be pulled. It just means your clearance is there for the day when you do go into another position with a job requirement justifying access. It makes it easier because you do not have to go through the whole clearance process every time you move jobs. It just has to be reactivated. Your new job may require access at a higher level, in which case you go through the appropriate process to gain that higher clearance. Or your new job may require no access or access at a lower level, in which case you may retain that higher clearance, but you only have access at the lower level or none at all. Clearance level and access level are not necessarily the same thing. (At least this is how I remember it worked in the military, which for me was a long time ago.)
Good question. Security clearances do not automatically entitle you to access classified information. You need to be working on an active contract with a need to know. This is all criminal leaking. Commonly called espionage.
So Bolton was only doing what Hillary did. Comey said there was nothing to see there, no reason to investigate, no jury would convict, so everyone should just move along. NOT. Bolton needs to be given the full treatment and not any kind of Comey forgiveness.
In fact, if it is now too late to revive the investigation into Hillary because of the statute of limitations, and too late to go after Comey for his negligence and dereliction in that matter, then the laws need to be changed. The statute of limitations for such offenses needs to be a lot longer so one administration can’t effectively prevent the next from doing anything about it.

Why do we have people who don’t understand that normal email is not secure (basic knowledge) working with what’s supposed to be secure information?

So they were investigating Bolton in the hopes his lack of caring about classified info would reap a reward regarding President Trump. Forgot to take the file with them when they had to depart their stolen offices. Sloppy.
I’m looking at this like a regular person out here using a good dose of common sense:
Why does anyone no longer working in DC need a security clearance?
Why do they have them? why are they allowed to have them?
If you have been voted out, if you have been fired, removed, quit, however it’s happened, if you are no longer on the job you should no longer get access to this classified information.
This is no different at all than handing back the keys to the building when you are no longer working there.
If you work at the bank and have a code to the vault, do you think they just let you walk out the door with than number when you’ve quit?
You don’t get the keys to the castle if you don’t live in the castle anymore.
It should be common practice, policy, a law, that when you move out of that job, the security clearances are removed.

I hope someone conducts a criminal analysis of all sources and uses of Bolton’s income and expenses over his entire time as a federal employee in all capacities. This is known as a Sources and Application of Funds Analysis.
This would also include times when he wasn’t a government employee but was using his government experience to do contract work for anyone.
