From the jobs report Ticker last Friday you know I’ve been flagging a pattern that has never been wrong in the thirty years I’ve followed it. It has only triggered, other than after the early 2020 “surprise” (certainly an externality and not an economic-driven event) twice — in front of the 2000 and 2008 market dislocations.
It is unfortunately not a good timing indicator at all; that is, it is a very strong warning but doesn’t tell you when the triggering event will come. However, what it does tell you is that you’re unwise to be expecting large forward returns in the market when it is trending negative — and it is and has been since December of 2023.
That of course pre-dates the last election so trying to point fingers at either of the last two Administrations is to point a finger at both. Then again this should not be a surprise: Running a 7% fiscal deficit, which we are, when the cost of borrowing on the short end is 4% is attempting to keep the economic plates spinning and the people who are getting the short end of that deal are all of the common folks such as you and I. [NO! Say it ain’t so! /s – W]
Neither political party has had the desire to take any of this and the driving elements of it in the economy on yet it must stop. Either rates have to be such that there is no negative real rate against the fiscal deficit anywhere on the curve, which means the 13 week bill must trade at about 7-1/4% and the 10 year around 9% or the fiscal deficit must be cut to 3% with rates where they are now. To cut the fiscal deficit to 3% you would have to take more than a trillion dollars out of Federal spending on an immediate and permanent basis.
There is, of course, exactly zero impetus within the Congress to do that or anything approaching it and the claims made by Trump when he came into office that tariffs were going to amount to a trillion a year on their own are clearly, six+ months into this experiment, not going to pan out. Add to that sky-high stock valuations and even a 50% decline in the stock market would not return any of the high-flying stocks to anywhere near reasonable valuation metrics.

Of extreme importance to me is the 12 month population-adjusted change in employment which now has an unbroken negative string of prints going back to December of 2023 and this month is -3.380 million. This is an indicator that very rarely shows this pattern and when it does it portends extremely serious economic dislocations (think 2008!) in the offing. It is worthless for exact timing but very useful as an indicator as to whether you want to take risk on a forward 12 or 24 month basis: Doing so when this indicator is showing trouble, which is quite rare, has historically proved to be very unwise.

I had hoped that it would be a temporary fad 25 years ago.

And when, someday, sooner or later, China invades Taiwan, Russia will be there too helping China sink American ships and kill American sailors. So how many here will applaud China (Xi) for being of so much critical help to Russia (Putin). Seems the only fair thing for Putin fans to do.. Iran and North Korea have been a lot of help to Russia (Putin) too, so don’t forget to applaud them!

The Ukraine War is going to end because President Trump and Putin want it to end. President Trump is not going to carry Ukraine any longer because it’s a losing proposition!
Sort of. What few on the US side seem to realize is that for Russia, the war is not a problem, but a solution to a problem. Conversely, for Trump, the war itself is a problem.
There had been a ceasefire for 33 years before this war started in 2022. In 1989, the contact line between NATO and Russian troops ran through Central Germany and now, 33 years later, it is ~1500 kms to the east, in the Donbas. That is what a ceasefire has gotten Russia.
The “salami slicing” by the West has been quite extraordinary when you think about it. If Belarus & Ukraine fall to US backed Color Revolutions, NATO troops will be where Hitler’s troops were in 1941, six months after the commencement of Operation Barbarossa.
Both Belarus & Ukraine are crucially important to Russian Military security as all of the invasions of Russia over the past 200+ years began from the Western borders of Belarus & Ukraine. The Russian Army needed all of the territories of both Belarus & Ukraine to stop the European armies and even that was not enough in 1812, when Napoleon sacked Moscow.
I hope someone on Trump’s team understands this as just reciting the cooked-up casualty figure of a million Russian soldiers killed is not going to get Trump anywhere.

This stuff really make me angry. After losing millions of NYers since the 2020 census, NY was supposed to loose 2 seats but only gave up 1. The redistricting took out our Republican district. Loss of people in our area were fewer than the rest of NY but that’s dem power for you. Republicans are corrupt in some ways but are too weak to ever come close to fighting the evil corrupt democrats deviousness! Illegals should never be counted in reapportionment! Start there first, then election integrity and the democrats would die in the darkness!

President Trump is transparent in his words and actions. He is consistent in what he says, what he does, and what he asks/demands of others. He lives rent free in their head, and they come around to seeing the universal principles by which he is operating. He hammers actions based on truth from one direction, then another, and they cannot mount an organized opposition against him.

He has a confidence and courage such that he doesn’t care what others think, yet a humility to know he has to do it with the help of like minded people. The Trump Train seems to be remarkably aligned with universal principles of Truth, which reflect the will and design of our Creator, and are the best standard by which we should live. These same principles were what our country’s founders used to declare independence, and framed into the Constitution of this nation.
Our founders believed that a nation should preserve the right and freedom of an individual to seek, understand, and live by God’s principles. They believed that free individuals working together in humility would make a stronger nation than a government which dictates its will on the people. President Trump professes and seeks to lead and restore this nation back to these same principles.
These principles resonate deeply within all human beings, down to our DNA in every cell, in our spirits, and produce fruit that “miraculously” multiplies. In less than a decade, conscientiousness — the trait most closely linked to responsibility, follow-through, and self-control — has collapsed among young adults. For those aged 16 to 39, it’s not a gradual erosion; it’s a plunge from respectability into the low 30th percentile. Older adults (who aren’t addicted to smartphones), meanwhile, remain essentially unchanged.

We must acknowledge that we’ve engineered an attention economy whose most precious raw material is human focus, and we are burning through it like cheap fuel. Until we admit that, there’s no hope of slowing the decline — much less reversing it.

So, as with most factors in our engineered cultural decline, due to convenience and content intentionally designed to be addictive along with suppression of any awareness of that by those profiting from it, it won’t be admitted or acted upon except by a far too small number of parents who, wisely, will only provide their minor children with dumb phones.

I’m a big detractor of the overuse of the smartphone, but I think there are more issues at play here. Mass immigration and the deconstruction of traditional culture play a role in this too. Low conscientiousness and agreeableness combined with high neuroticism seems to be a side effect of our increasingly low trust society.
If this is truly a public health concern Then shouldn’t our wonderful government agencies be stepping in…they certainly cut out vapes….But we all know that everything government touches turns to ****. If you look at all of it from a tree forrest perspective…all of it needs to be taken down.
