I grew up being driven through the burned out NY Avenue corridor every week, after the MLK riots.
It took 30 years for the damage to start to be repaired. Small business owners, especially Jewish ones BTW, were burned out and never came back.
I’ve been that person, walking on a dark night from one location up to Union Station, watching a pack of feral boys travel down the other side of the street and assessing whether they would bother to cross the road and come after an easy target.
I’ve walked daily past the men’s homeless shelter, with the men just hanging around, one half block from the crack house.
I’ve been among church members who did everything they could to try to get the bag lady off the streets because everyone understood she was getting beat up and was perpetually in danger, but were ultimately unsuccessful because she just would not agree to budge (RIP Martha Sanders).
I lived through what was previously a really lovely classic park off 16th Street becoming unavailable to the average citizens because it became infested with drug sales and gangs.
Capitol Hill had a small Renaissance about a decade ago. People were moving back. Since then, it has deteriorated once again. Friends tried the living in the city with the progressive charter school route, only to have their children get mugged.
I’ve seen the homeless tents spring up in the last five years, that never would have been tolerated in previous decades.
The city is an embarrassment as a capital city.
The homeless problem is a thorny knot, but my view is that it is not a kindness to either the homeless or the average citizens to continue to just accept the unacceptable. I also suspect that there are national security and counter-intelligence reasons for removing street people – many of whom might not actually be street people, perhaps.

In regards to your national security comment, you are correct. Back in the early 80’s during the cold war, my father worked right across the street from the Russian embassy. He said one afternoon there was a massive high-speed crash and a car flipped over and a lot of people were injured. He said all the homeless guys on the street rushed into help, BREAKING COVER because the accident was so bad. They were all feds spying on the Russians.
So there is definitely a security component, as that tactic could be used in reverse.

The President’s political enemies really should be afraid. This kind of hands-on management, driven by a concern for the everyday lives of Americans, down to the grassroots, is so atypical of what people have come to expect of the denizens of Washington, that it can’t help but resonate. Is this the authoritarianism and dictatorial administration his critics have been decrying? If so, I expect that the people will want more of it.

It will be interesting to see how the homeless will be handled.
The combination of drug addiction, mental illness, and immorality/criminality is profound. Not solvable by simply moving them to institutional facilities with clean beds, showers, 12-step programs, and subsidized make-work jobs.
A few would benefit from such help, but very few.
An honest study of the root causes of the explosion in destitution would shatter many illusions about contemporary America. Starting with the effect of the destruction of the nuclear family with attendant strife that began with industrialization, continued with women’s suffrage, picked up impetus with WWII, and accelerated with the women’s movement of the 1970’s.
Two “equal” heads of household/family is a guarantee of chronic strife, which leads to mental illness in children, which is socially contagious. Alternatively, a single parent household, and the craziness of multiple step-parent and custody arrangements. Add the cold daycare upbringing and government schools, and what did we expect?
We dismantled our mental health system, and this is the result. The majority of the homeless are mentally ill or addicted to one substance or another. Until they are no longer addicted, they should not be allowed free access to society—Ditto for the mentally ill. In the nineteenth century, we had a mental health system that was called the “funny farm.” It was a sheltered place where these people could live out their lives in safety and yet were not a threat to society. They worked to the extent they could, mostly growing their own food. There are therapeutic advantages to having a job, even a simple one. Perhaps a modern version of this is something we should institute. Addicts are a more complicated problem. You can’t force someone to stop using drugs or alcohol; that is their God. However, it is also true that most addicts support their addiction via crime. Perhaps a system that removed their freedom if they refused to give up their addiction is the answer here.
DC is a metaphor for the whole countr.
Ironically, in this place resides those who’ve the greatest power to effect change in our lives, change to our cities and towns, but in it resides those who’ve contributed the most to destroying what was good in our lives, our cities and towns.
POTUS is spotlighting what ails DC for he knows it’s what ails all our large cities and he knows those ailments have spread beyond the cities.
Words cannot begin to express how good it feels to at long last have a President sitting in the Oval Office who truly loves our Republic and is not afraid to say so by both words and actions!

I saw 13 of the European capitals in the summer of 1995. I saw D.C. a few years later during Clinton’s second term. I remember thinking the city was very lovely and could hold its own anywhere. Disgraceful it was allowed to fall into this state. Thank God for President Trump.
