North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis previously railroaded the nomination of USAO Ed Martin. Senator Tillis has also blocked many of the key elements of President Trump’s border effort and immigration plan, and last night he announced he will vote against President Trump and the Big Beautiful Bill.
Today, facing severe backlash from the people within his state and the larger MAGA community, Thom Tillis announces he is going to forcefully oppose the BBB and is not going to seek reelection, so there’s no political leverage against him.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina said Sunday he will not seek reelection, a day after announcing his opposition to President Donald Trump’s tax breaks and spending cuts package because of its reductions to health care programs.
Tillis said he was proud of his career in public service but acknowledged the difficult political environment for those who buck their party and go it alone.
“In Washington over the last few years, it’s become increasingly evident that leaders who are willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise, and demonstrate independent thinking are becoming an endangered species,” he said in a lengthy statement.
“Sometimes those bipartisan initiatives got me into trouble with my own party, but I wouldn’t have changed a single one.”
Trump, in social posts, had berated Tillis for being one of two Republican senators who voted on Saturday night against advancing the massive bill. (more)

He’s young enough to still head over to some position in big pharma or similar. Funding and campaign contributions are always interesting.
Tillis is a cheap labor corporatist who never missed an opportunity to fink on his voters to reward his donors. He was an unprincipled, unpurposed miscreant who makes Mitt Romney look like Patrick Henry. Good riddance.
100 percent.
One down 99 to go.
I imagine he was paid handsomely to oppose Trump. NC has a lot of dark money pouring into it.
Why wait until election day? Why not leave now? What’s the benefit to Tillis to stay? Does he just want to be a prick against Trump for the rest of his term?
Tillis’ embrace of bipartisanship, faux compromise, and self-serving independent thinking has no place in today’s politics. How rich did he get in the Senate?
Like McShame, he’ll cling to power until the end and screw MAGA on every important vote.
They’ve got him by the cajones, telling him he’s gotta stay and do as much dirty work as he can till they kick him out.
NC has a Democrat governor who would appoint his replacement if he resigned. Not that it would be much of a change but…
I am SO HAPPY to read this. I was way beyond sick of hearing his name in all those aggressive-cancer-level ads, 99% of which was one bald-faced lie after another.
