Know a student who started out that way, went to Northeastern and graduated early and got the heck out of here. Methinks they had a heads-up or somehow knew this was coming.

China has ramped up persecution of the underground, true churches and their congregations. Pray for these students, that they may retain their student visas.

Decades overdue.. The left thought by educating foreign students – even from enemies of the US – that they would return home, becoming evangelists of democracy and freedom. A noble, but flawed, ideal. But then Democrats are simply like that – incapable of looking beyond the end of their noses. What has it become? An ATM for universities, fuel for the fires of progressive radical ideals, and for China in particular , a great way to access and steal research, intellectual property to take home to the CCP. Look to Harvard and Columbia as examples of the former, Stanford for the latter.Yes, decades overdue.

However, they will all enroll in British, Canadian, Australian and some European schools. If the objective is to deny them access to Western technology, it is unlikely to succeed.
The West should have built a real coalition to keep them out, but it has long since fallen and sold out to CCP and Gulf money.
This is therefore more of a symbolic gesture. It will hurt the Big Edu financially, though—which is great—and it will move our schools away from incrementalism and mediocrity.
I guess we are fortunate that education equips the Chinese and most Asian students with enough knowledge to simulate intellect, but that knowledge often appears detached from any genuine intellectual curiosity.
Back in the day, when dinosaurs still roamed the planet, I went to school with many Chinese (and Korean) students. They were certainly formally educated, yet most remained comparatively dim. Their strength lay in rote memorization. What they largely lacked was erudition and the curiosity that drives deeper thinking.
The foundations of intellectualism are essential for innovation, not repetition. A fast learner is not necessarily a good thinker. When you observe Chinese students closely, what you will often see is emulation, not innovation.
There are no Chinese students without connections to the CCP. ONLY CCP-favored children of CCP-favored parents are allowed to leave the country.

My husband taught at a Uni here in Canada. A huge percentage of students he taught were Chinese. He identified two out of all the ones he taught that he was sure were sp-eyeing . He taught Geological Engineering. I wonder what the ratio would be in soft humanities.
