The Big Beautiful Bill is now in the Senate, and Senator Rand Paul announced today he is a big “No” on the bill itself.

Deficit spending will be taken care of by projected GDP growth of over 3%. Paul does not mention that. Nor does he mention the great MAGA things in the bill like completing the border wall, finally.

That is what Ron Johnson argued against. He was an original Tea Party Candidate. He says that this bill allows too much spending. He wants more cuts in spending.
We are cutting spending. We are throwing illegals off of all of the benefits. They are also going to stop paying people who think that government benefits are a lifestyle instead a short term benefit.
These idiots will vote for every spending bill unless it is for MAGA. I don’t care that Johnson is too stupid to see that we will have an increase in revenue and that we can revisit spending cuts next year.
Any spending that does not get cut to their satisfaction will be paid for by $10.5 Trillion dollars worth of investments and job creation. More jobs and more businesses mean more money pouring into the Treasury.
The Secretaries within their departments have already made extensive cuts.

The first is that it doesn’t “codify the DOGE cuts.” A reconciliation bill, which is a budget bill that passes with 50 votes, is limited by senate rules to “mandatory” spending only — eg Medicaid and Food Stamps. The senate rules prevent it from cutting “discretionary” spending — eg the Department of Education or federal grants. The DOGE cuts are overwhelmingly discretionary, not mandatory. The bill saves more than 1.6 TRILLION in mandatory spending, including the largest-ever welfare reform. A remarkable achievement.

But there’s no reason why sane people can’t estimate the DOGE math in our heads and see how it will all work together.
The lies and misleads about this bill are epic even for the swamp.
The problem is those Senate rules Miller mentioned. None of it is in the Constitution, and most of it has only existed since the 1970s. Those rules make it easy to increase spending but extremely difficult to cut anything. Those rules exist to ensure dominance of the Senate over the House of Representatives, and to enhance the power of both the Senate majority and minority leaders (co-leaders of the Uniparty). There is no good reason for “reconciliation” rules and 60-vote majorities and all the rest. In the 19th Century (before the 17th Amendment), virtually every bill going through the Senate only needed a simple majority to pass (just like in the House), with the only exceptions being the few things requiring a supermajority by the Constitution. It could be that way again if those rules could be changed, but that would mean a direct assault on the power of the Senate, and even Ron Johnson and Rand Paul will not be in favor of that.

The Russo-Ukrainian war has made it quite obvious that most of what is allocated for defense spending isn’t actually spent on defense. For all we spend, our weapons are no better, and in many cases are actually inferior to what the Russians have, even though their defense budget is about a tenth of ours. Our military industrial capacity is also inferior to the Russians’. I would be willing to bet that we could actually increase our defense capabilities while cutting defense spending by half or more by cutting out waste, boondoggles and corruption. Unfortunately, this isn’t going to happen for the foreseeable future because the military industrial complex likes the status quo, thank you very much, and the military industrial complex always gets what it wants. See the “Golden Dome”, the latest boondoggle, for example. Trillions will be spent on it and it will never work.
$1T defense budget and Chinese and Russian weapons are matching and exceeding ours. Russia builds 5,10,100 to 1 artillery & drones ratio. China builds what, a ship a month? What are we getting for our money? A lot of national insecurity.

Why would he announce that he is a no vote? Unless he is hoping to milk some more money out of a yes vote, or wanting some aspects of the bill to be changed. He hasn’t given any indication of being swayed contingent on changes in the bill.

THe “Big Beautiful Bill” should have the tax cuts and TRUE budget cuts (10% or more below current spending, not the current services baseline) front-loaded, not back loaded as has been the practice. This has always been the case, where the budget cuts NEVER materialize in the out years.
I think Rand Paul just loves being contrary. While it is sometimes a good thing, more times than not he, like his old man, is on the wrong side, mainly because they see themselves as “knowing better”,,, While I agree with them in certain instances, more times than not I find them to be snake oil sales types. Gas by me dropped a whopping 8 cents a gallon in some places (and another station is holding firm at the long standing $3.59 per gallon) as we stare at Pritzker’s gas tax on June 1. BFD. Not everyone is ‘enjoying’ savings right now.
Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, and watch the GOP do what it does best! Get back into the minority so they can tell youbwhat they will do if only they were in the majority. Remember, the goal is not to goverb. They are ok with Dems governing so long as they get reelected…MAGA, Schmaga. Who cares what happens to the middle class so long as we keep our seats.
