Ancillary to the takeover of the Columbia University library ¹yesterday that led to the subsequent arrest of dozens of campus chaos agents, Acting Columbia University President Claire Shipman has announced a decision to terminate 180 paid research staff.
The termination of employment comes as a result of the Trump administration withdrawing funding for the University.

Instead of using their endowment to retain staff, the University terminates them.

I come from an academic family. It used to be, a long time ago when we had universities that actually functioned as providers of higher education in things useful and true, that the faculty to admin ration was 6-7 to 1. Unfortunately, institutional culture matters and is deeply embedded so ‘culling’ simply isn’t going to work.
My two cents: burn it all down and start over from scratch AT THE STATE LEVEL. new institutions Concentrate first on building institutions that provide skills critical for civilizational maintenance like engineering and accounting.

You are not counting graduate students which are nearly 3 times more than undergraduate students. So ratio is closer 1 to 4 administrators to students.

How much of that should be clawed back? How much of that was USAID-style fraudulent funding? DOGE should dig deep into Columbia (and Harvard, and Yale, and etc.) and demand restitution, plus interest and penalties, from these so-called “schools.”

Or more likely, $300,000 to 200 top researchers ($60 Million) and $50,000 to 2,000 Grad students and Summer interns($100 Million) and they pocket the remaining $ 62 Million.
Universities cannot automatically replace a funding shortfall with endowment distributions. Many [read most] donors stipulate terms that direct distributions to specific programs or departments or other specified purposes. What is legally available for discretionary spending must be approved by leadership/board.

I have no doubt that there are parts of this university that have real value, and maybe those parts can somehow be salvaged. But overall, these “schools” have become communist factories, and it’s hard to see any way that they can be reformed.

There is much research that is worthless and does not lead to a better understanding of our real world and improve the lives of people. The problem is that those who allocate funding are often clueless and unable to do a proper assessment. They need to approve more smaller short term projects and then look at further funding. No student should be funded or allowed on the campus if his or her interest is in protesting. That belongs to the lives outside of the university when they can do so on their own dime and in their own time with no disruption of academia..

Layoffs at other universities are in progress. For example, NC news has announced that layoffs at Duke University will be in the hundreds. It is just taking a minute for administrators to decide which staff (note the reference here and elsewhere is to staff and not faculty) to terminate and is a ‘good’ opportunity for ideological realignment (removal of conservatives) for all universities.
