I remember when the great Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, had a tent city for thugs and whatnot. They got to wear pink underwear. It was glorious, but didn’t last long. Only until he was defeated by the same forces that today steal all elections in that once great state.
I will say this. Alcatraz is the perfect location for just those types that President Trump is talking about. It is a similar setup to that crime-crushing venue in El Salvador and I heartily support its reopening .

Mostly, the trouble I see with an open-air type incarceration camp, is that you still need fences, guards, and all the accompanying tools for keeping them in. Everything has a price tag attached and having these type-A monsters always figuring ways out and back into the community ( with lots of outside help, no doubt) is a pretty steep bill when the ultimate hard-time prison makes escape a non-issue. I would guess that it is the best and least expensive route to take both in wise use of dedicated funds and the saving of innocent lives. Death Valley is now a tourist destination.

El Salvador’s President talked about expanding their Super Max. I say send all non-US citizen violent offenders there. This will make space for more of our home grown violent offenders.
Why rebuild Alcatraz? Why not just refortify what needs refortyfying & let them live in the squalor already there. It would be too easy for these monsters to escape from a desert setting, not to mention an armed invasion by their fellow gang members to secure their escape. Better yet, strand them somewhere in Alaska like Kodiak Island that’s virtually impassable most days of the year.

The prisoners will have a beautiful view. I’ve been on a tour of Alcatraz. It is a tourist attraction. It is truly dark and dank and SF is cold out there on the water, even in the summer.
Alcatraz was infamous for bragging that no prisoner could escape because of the cold water in the bay and the strong current around the island.
They have a triathlon every year were they swim from Alcatraz to shore. Me thinks the three escapees succeeded.
They managed to get off the rock, then floated out to sea……great plan!

My thought has been to build a super prison on Navassa Island, an uninhabited US island in the Caribbean. Two square miles. No state judge to mess with. Not sure if any insurrectionist federal judge would have any jurisdiction over an uninhabited US island. Unsure how that would work.

I think a great strategy, with great ROI for U.S. citizens would be to start a volunteer prosecution fund for each of these criminals: The politicians, the media liars, the election swindlers, and everyone else committing treason with the intent of destroying our sacred Nation.
The volunteer funds would pay for their investigation, prosecution and their prison and/or execution costs, depending on what they were lawfully convicted of. Of course we will presume innocence until proven guilty, but I think every one of those on the low hanging fruit list are clearly guilty. Those found to be obstructing investigation or prosecution would be added to the target list.

The immediate Alcatraz renovation costs… not as much as people may be thinking.
Alcatraz was built in a time when people 1) *knew how to* build solid stuff that lasts – *way*before planned obsolescence was implemented;

Reopening this particular prison is simply good common sense PR in advancement of criminal Justice reform. The objective, after years of democratic leniency and indulgence, is simply incarceration. I like tents in the desert too, but this is a symbol of security.

He should also consider McNeil island, maybe even more than Alcatraz. But then making San Francisco residents have to stare at it knowing it is operational is great psychological warfare.
We need a two-tiered prison system.
Tier one is for first time offenders. An opportunity to rehabilitate and correct one’s behavior. Maybe technical classes after GED classes.
Tier 2 prison is for repeat offenders. No TV, no weight training, minimal nutrition meals, no library, work crews for public works and farming crews to grow prison food.
TVs in the tier 1 prison would only show how tough life is in a tier 2 prison.
Why not re-open Alcatraz Island ? If nothing else but for the optics of it.
Sure, there are more cost effective locations and methods, but a large federal prison in the middle of San Francisco Bay, would drive the left even further over the edge.
I don’t want to spend the money. It would cost too much to remove the non-lighthouse buildings that are there now, although that would be the safety thing to do. It’s hard enough to maintain the bridges and the on-shore historic structures against the effects of the sea. The Bureau of Prisons was very glad to be able to close it, back in the day.

It would be a massive reconstruction effort to restore that prison to operating condition. Sea water and fog have not been kind to it. The concrete and rebars have rotted away everywhere. Nice “symbolic” idea, but hardly a practical one. It never was a good place to put a prison.

I do not support sending citizens to foreign prisons. Even murderers can have a visit from their mom – and I believe sending US citizens to foreign prisons qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.

One of the worst punishments on Alcatraz was something the prisoners looked forward to. When they were outside, in the yard, they could see San Francisco while thinking, “If I had not killed John Doe, I could be there drinking and womanizing.”
1000 prisoners and their guards would take semi trucks of food and supplies daily. Unless someone comes up with a RORO to put them on the shore, it must all be unloaded by hand on a rocking boat.

WA State has some more modern, and vacant, island confinement facilities. It would make more sense to survey the existing island confinement facilities in America, than to go straight to Alcatraz. I grew up in the SF Bay Area and know its’ history. Lots of both logistical and cultural hurdles to reopen “the Rock”.
