Alcatraz is currently under National Park Service/DOI administration, which in practice means it is a protected location set aside from other uses through an Act of Congress.
I’m not sure what the legal process of reopening the prison as an operating facility would be, but if Trump is speaking both metaphorically and literally doing would likely spark a confrontation over ownership, administration, and management of all Federal lands.
Perhaps too early to consider if that is what Trump is up to, but given his handling of other issues igniting a secondary debate through a primary issue would be line with how he has approached things thus far in Term #2.

I am not optimistic about this. I toured Alcatraz about 30 years ago. As a prison, it has been closed for 50 years or so. It has been a tourist site with very limited access to only certain areas.
During this time there has been limited maintenance probably to only the areas seen by tourists.
Built of reinforced concrete and steel, both require maintenance. The Salt air environment of San Francisco Bay is very corrosive.
It is located in a very active seismic area. On the positive side, Alcatraz is nicknamed “the rock.”it is essentially a rock island. Rock does well in earthquakes. Surrounded by bay mud? Not sure. Any Bay Area geotechnical engineers out there?
Very expensive build. It may be salvageable/ feasible. I doubt it.
From what I’ve seen in documentaries it has corroded ‘bigly’. Would take massive amount of money to restore. I don’t think they do any maintenance on it…

I saw on FB today at a local store, the apes got one of those big things on wheels that you move boxes on. They somehow loaded it up high with cartons and just pushed it out the door. Video showed them unloading the cartons into a car. Commenter said police station was three blocks down the road. I don’t remember which store it was. They are so steenkin’ blatant with their ripping us off. Good candidates for Alcatraz. DH and I visited there back in the 90’s. Lots of work to be done to get it ship shape. But on the other hand, perps don’t care about us so why would we care if their little room was ship shape?

Actually, while I am in favor of holding criminals accountable, I am not very much in favor of putting them in Alcatraz. It is a posh location with beautiful views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Criminals don’t deserve that “Room with a View, ” and it would diminish locking them up as a deterrent to crime IMHO while they have this resort location with 3 square/day, a life of leisure, and all the freebies/perks that come along with being a hardened criminal in CA. Democrats will also make sure all the inmates get 5-100 ballots each in every election. I think it would be preferable to stick with El Salvador.

Lib Media glosses over the fact that Alcatraz was taken over, set on fire and many buildings destroyed by the protestors wanting rights for Indians. Think this was the same movement Marlon Brando championed. This fact is never mentioned on tours of the facility and we are to assume that the facility just collapsed.
It was fairly intact but old and somewhat deteriorating prior to this.
Think most of these “protestors” walked due to lefty CA judges and Federal judiciary at the time.

Want a potential great idea? Take over Pelican Bay Prison in far northern California. Capacity of 3500, plus they shut down a wing that could be re-opened. I believe this already is a “super max” prison.
California has existing capacity as Newsom shut down at least two prisons, and six adjunct facilities at other prisons.
Chuckawalla State Prison and the California City Correctional Facility are both closed and open to be used.
California is phenomenally costly, so adding prisons in the Derp South likely more cost efficient.
Example. Five years ago, pre Covid, a friend – who builds homeless shelters – said his lowest laborer gets $45 an hour bc they have to pay “prevailing wage”.
CA costs and regulations are beyond ridiculous. Newsoms new policies are driving two (potentially three) additional oil refineries to close. That’s a 20% to 30% supply drop to local refining!
Please… just strip of citizenship and deport the animals. Why can other countries empty their prisons and insane asylums.. and we can’t? They’re expensive to house and the American people have had too much of their hard earned money squandered. No jail time. Get rid of them and let them find shelter under a flag that will take them!
