Apparently soda used to come in little packets like Koolaid. I would like to ditch the plastic soda bottles and return to packets – much less pollution! I like to mix club soda with fruit juice but yes I take issue with the containers again.

I don’t want to nitpick what low-income people get to buy, but money for supplemental nutrition has to go for foods containing at least some nutrition.
It isn’t hard to separate actual soda from other groceries.
There is a myriad of sugar traps fo low info peasants.
When the local stop and shop sells a gallon of milk for twice the price of a 2 liter bottle of soda, that is a problem.
Around here, not-from-concentrate 100% fuit juice costs less than cola in a 2L bottle.

I am witness to the amount of junk food and soda that is bought with Food Stamps (I hate the term SNAP, it was made to make those getting Food Stamps feel less uncomfortable about getting them.) and at times it’s disgusting.
I have customers buy literally whole bags of junk food. Chips, ice cream. sodas, energy drinks, candy bars, sugared cereals. It’s unbelievable. Instead of states asking for waivers to stop the use of Food Stamps for sodas, HHS just need to outright ban it themselves, since it is federal funds.
And it’s at least 10% of my daily sales.
Sadly these people are not only poor they are also do not care about their own wellbeing. They can easily buy a lot more nutrition with the food stamps than piling up on sodas. It really isn’t hard. These people are not not spending their own hard earned money on food and neither are they spending their own hard earned money on the health problems that ensues as a result of their bad life choices.
It’s not as if a person can’t obtain a soda without government help.
I donate to food pantries locally. I would never donate soda.
s many in my county just go across the bridge into KY to shop … it will hurt the convenience stores and the Dollar General stores. There is a big Walmart in Logan WV which this might hurt….but you watch they wll devise a way …buy 2 cases of water, get a case of pop free …. there is a way around stuff. Speaking of which, I was at a series of meetings in WV once. There was a big window looking outside, and I watched an old guy drive his electric wheelchair from his house to the local Walmart store.
Cases of water and other food stuffs need to be ‘non returnable’…national security/food security.

This is a bit of a sticky issue for me. On the one hand people are given money from the govt to buy food for themselves and their family and is restricting them any different than perhaps having govt. run grocery stores to hand out specific food allowances to welfare recipients.
On the other hand, these poor people have more health issues usually than the rest of the population and for various reasons, but one big one is good nutrition. They then are dependent on the Medicaid funds to get medical help for their many times preventable chronic illnesses. That costs many more tax dollars, so restricting food allowances to healthy nutritious foods seems like a good idea. Tough call I guess. I’m in the restrict the non nutritious foods being allowed on the tax payer’s dime.
Going to be tough to prevent cheating on this system which already is cheated on big time. Selling the cards for cash etc.
I view the liberally given government gift cards, the revamping them so they are nearly indistinguishable from a regular credit card, the lack of any constraints on what purchases can be made with taxpayer monies, etc., all as continued efforts in the left’s war against agency, like the kleptomaniac’s “can’t help it,” the choice to live a perverted lifestyle “born this way,” the morbidly obese glutton’s “body positivity” movement, the black ladies claiming that their place in life is due to “systemic racism.”
Always an excuse as to why they didn’t really get to choose their actions – in order to rationalize their poor choices.

No one wants to own their own life, as if someone else is choosing to live it for them.

If one has ever watched a few episodes of ‘my 600lb life’, you will note a similarity of personalities and reasons that the people do what they do. Those people need help in more ways than one. And very often, there is no cure for a true ‘personality’ disorder.
I remember when they got boxes of actual food like beans, rice, bread, butter. Hard to cook when you have no kitchen. Paper vouchers were created like money and made point of distribution easier. They were easy to trade for goods or cash. Now, there are debit cards with personal pin numbers, so we don’t embarrass or stigmatize the poor with paper vouchers.
It’s Interesting what they buy. First of the month card recharged so let’s buy steak and lobster. I’ve personally seen this. End of the month, out of money. No thoughts of budgeting, frugality, smart shopping. And they still find ways to cheat.
A friend tried to buy a bunch of gallon fruit punch for a kids’ party. Limit of two. Why? The one-dollar deposit makes them ripe for abuse. Spend welfare, go outside and dump, return for deposit in cash, buy cigarettes or whatever. Clerk had seen this, and management came up with limit to combat it. Sorry, sir.
As good people we don’t want to see people starve, but don’t want to be taken advantage of either. Same with the endless “unhoused” i.e. homeless living in tents. Many reject provided options due to restrictions, rules and the desire to be free. How much does society (taxpayers) owe them for food, clothing, housing, etc. Advocates cry that sleep, food, housing, healthcare is a right. No, they are human needs. Rights to free speech, religion, etc. don’t cost others. The cradle to grave care approach has no end to demands and costs from others.
Imagine what it would look like if we brought back soup lines and handouts of real food only? Harder to hide the numbers and harder to cheat. Need a meal, here you go. Best to get our economy humming with living wage jobs, affordable housing, and real opportunities to thrive. Go Team Trump!
I have watched someone buy two cases of bottled water with their Food Stamp card (it’s called an Oregon Trail card here) and ten to fifteen minutes later come in with $4.80 in bottle deposit return receipts, cash them out and then go buy a couple of big cans of alcoholic beverages.
And not a dang thing I can say about it to the State.
Folks on EBT cannot afford real healthy foods which are sky-highly priced. IT’s time to get manufacturer’s to manufacture food that omit the unhealthy additions. Those who used food-stamps to get organic or the higher-priced healthier stuff do so because they don’t have to feed a family other than themselves, consume a lot of food or sodas, snacks and far too large bargain priced foods like cereals, sugar, meat, poultry and frozen veg/fruits.

Here is the game plan that the forces against Trump will be using for the foreseeable future. They will attempt to get you to make the perfect the enemy of the good. Be it the freedom clowns and spending, the immigration hawks with H1B visas, the peace doves with timing, the cultural warriors with total bans of DEI/CRT, the neocons with war fighting, or the swamp dwellers with draining the swamp. All of them will attempt to get you to believe on whatever issue is the issue of the day that it doesn’t go far enough or do enough. They will try to make you think that some sub issue of that issue is more important and should be handled first, that since the issue hasn’t been handled yet it won’t be, that we can’t do more than one thing, that so and so is a plant to stop the draining of the swamp, or that because it wasn’t 100% Trump lied. On every single issue, one or more groups will attempt this strategy.
You can’t allow them that power over you. If Trump secures the border and deports 2 million, don’t allow them to reduce that good by them saying well he didn’t deport 2.5 million, so he failed or lied. You can’t allow them to use the perfect to void out the good in the coming months. They will try. They already have with the CR and the H1b visa debates. It works, that is why they use it. You have to keep it in the front of your head on everything about to occur that half a loaf or hopefully in most cases 7/8ths a loaf is better than no loaf.
Do not allow them to gaslight you into thinking the good is the enemy of the perfect. (Two posters on CTH that fit this description.)
In the real world, most things are never perfect, but if we try real hard, we can get plenty of good accomplished in the coming 4 years.

I remember those deportations. They came back within days. Even back then they were so organized that a “cousin” would fill in for them on the job seamlessly for the few days it took for them to return. I learned this working for the Republican club founded by Barry Goldwater. A male only club after major lawsuits against male only clubs had been won in prominent cases. I also learned that what the feminists told me about women, pregnancy and medical insurance was true. So ever since I try to see both sides – very time consuming.

If it’s like New York, if that girl is 16 ish, she can legally have the State declare her emancipated (divorced?) from her parents and she can get her parents to pay her child support!

It has been my lifelong observation that it is easy to say what you would do in any given situation until you are actually in that situation.
The best recourse these parents have would be to take their daughter and move out of Colorado to a state which hasn’t yet been completely subverted by the Left. Even at that the child may run away from home back to a state which supports her delusions. The media are literally stuffed with hysterics about Trump’s 25% vehicle tariffs, and claiming that all auto/truck prices will go up, as well as insurance., as well as indirect things such as trucking (shopping) costs, and that it will take years of pain before auto industry could be brought back to U.S.
Is this true, and assuming it is, could there be a correction over time, and how long.
Or are there other factors that should be considered.

The whole point of the endeavor is to incentivize Build/Made in the USA. For a time, cars made in the USA MAY BE cheaper than imported/tariffed vehicles because of the tariffs. Which means that most consumers will purchase their vehicles from a company that builds them in the USA if price is their main issue.
Foreign companies may decide to eat some of the cost of the tariffs in order to compete in the USA so that their prices only go up a little bit. They may tell themselves that a little less profit is still worth it to sell in the USA. Then they will probably go to the politicians in their country and demand that they lower their tariffs on USA made vehicles to make it “fair”.
OR, companies importing their tariffed vehicles may completely absorb the cost of the tariffs into their costs of doing business and not pass it on to the consumers in the USA in higher prices. I saw an article the other day in which they stated that DOGE is now looking into the groups where the money went in order to prove that they did what they said they were going to do in their contract with the US government. They have to produce receipts.

What if you have an engineering company involved in a construction project and something goes amiss – does your engineer have all the documents involved in the process in good order? Smooth and neat, chronological and all work orders, as-built changes documented, transmittal orders that accompanied plans showing the date received and approved by Public Works, for example – or will there be Acco file folders of cabbage leaves fanned out, missing dates, critical dates that will impinge on the company’s fortunes and those of the principals. Maybe the engineering company did everything all right, 100% but when you go to look for that link in the chain of documents, will it be there?

I think there’s a danger in this AI stuff that people aren’t talking about. We’ve seen examples of this before, but then we act like it didn’t happen. People think anything that comes off a computer is somehow better. Come to think of it, that’s how we got the voting machines foisted on us- “It’s the wave of the future”.

The EU plans to scale down its imports of Ukrainian farm produce, the bloc’s commissioner for agriculture Christophe Hansen has told AFP. An “emergency” scheme that allowed Kiev to sell such goods to the bloc without any tariffs is slated to end in June, as its member states no longer want to extend it, he explained.
Europe has always been a bad trading partner and have barriers to imports that go considerably beyond mere tariffs.
