Since CITGO is 100% owned by Venezuela, when you buy gas at a CITGO gas station should you transfer an additonal 25% of the pump total from your left pocket into your right pocket? But then what do you do with it? Oh. Right. Mail it to ME.
CITGO has been up for sale for years.
Due to indebtedness issues, CITGO is currently in receivership. There was an offer to buy it from PE managed Amber Energy last October, but the court rejected it. The court is currently looking for new offers.
These days CITGO is a downstream refiner/marketer. It gets its crude from various upstream producers. AFAIK Venezuelan crude is embargoed in the US. I think the Lake Charles, LA refinery is its most important asset.
But I guess in 2022 Biden gave Chevron a waiver to export some Venezuelan crude produced from its joint venture in Venezuela. CITGO refineries are optimized for heavy, sour crude like Venezuela produces so I suppose it’s a big deal.
What does marketing mean when speaking of O&G companies? I see KMI always talks about marketing in their quarterlies, but they don’t say what exactly that is.
Additionally, our biggest oilfield in the SW produces light sweet crude, which we have minimal capacity to refine. Therefore we export much of it across the globe. Which is why we were buying their sour crude – this is what most US refineries can handle.
Is there a plan to build a Permian sweet crude oil refinery.

There are lots of Sinclair stations here in the west, I use one in Colorado Springs regularly. Most of them have a dinosaur out front. The Sinclair refinery is in, not surprisingly, Sinclair, WY. On a recent road trip to NC, we saw them a good distance east of here.

They are allowed to extract our wealth but can keep their profits/workforce salaries (their Main Street economy benefit) outside of our country.
President Trump sees where this is going. He understands that a country cannot survive let alone thrive if we don’t “Make our own stuff”. He understands that we need to benefit from both sides of the Supply and Demand equation.
We need to be able to make our own cake and eat it too. We can choose to get a cake elsewhere but it has to be a choice, not a dependency.
I hope and pray there is somebody else with the native intelligence of President Trump waiting in the wings when his time as President is over. We have to have follow-on of his same policies.

So if China continues to buy Venezuelan oil (say $10 billion or so per year), the USA will put an additional 25% tariff on ALL Chinese goods going to USA, on top of the tariff we will already have on China (25-50% on some goods) or will put on April 2 ? If China doesn’t go along with it, that could cause a lot of price pain in the short term.

I asked the interweb why the US hates Venezuela. Here’s what the interweb said:
The US government has been the strongest agent of multinational corporations since the 1920’s. During the Cold War it toppled at least 47 democratically elected governments around the world because those governments endangered business interests in some way. When Hugo Chavez took over Venezuela he enacted land reforms which involved taking land illegally given to multinational corporations by previous governments and distributed it to the people of Venezuela. Even worse he nationalized Venezuela’s fossil fuel industry. In 2002 the CIA attempted a coup d’etat against Chavez, but it failed miserably. Since then they’ve been messing with Venezuela in every way they can, trying to destabilize the regime. They’ve done a pretty good job too.
If America is successful in installing a puppet government in Venezuela, it will be a return to the bad old days. Said leader will inevitably turn into a right-wing dictator who will let multinational corporations loot Venezuela.

Trump isn’t supposed to be beholden to multinational corporate interests yet here Trump is, enforcing their interests, to the detriment not only of the American people but of ordinary and innocent Venezuelans as well. Venezuela has enormous crude oil reserves but its heavy crude needs certain refinery processes however Houston has several of those, so it would be under normal conditions an important resource for MAGA purposes. But instead of pursuing MAGA as Trump promised as part of his election campaign, here he is promoting anything but MAGA, when he doesn’t even have to, if it wasn’t for his own, presumably personal loyalty, to American multi-national interests.
If the interweb is correct in its response, then isn’t it past time MAGA people stood up to Trump and called him out on his evidentially counter-productive Venezuelan policy, not to mention his counter-productive policy on Cuba as well, come to think of it? If MAGA wants peace in your region, why does MAGA want to stamp all over the various countries in your region, instead of simply building peace and friendship with them, like normal countries would do?

The replacement for Venezuelan oil is heavy crude from Canada. Since Canada hasn’t made any real concessions you can expect he’ll do the same to Canadian oil. And it will cost a fortune to switch from burning that kind of oil in the US.
Since Canada’s oil is mostly landlocked due to the Liberals blocking all exports etc. The US is the only customer and Trump will be tariffing Americans only.
China is the largest buyer of Venezuelan oil followed by the U.S., India, and Spain. Trump is putting tariffs on American who buy Venezuelan oil.
Eventually the rest of the world is going to gang up on the USA. Trump only succeeds if he gets them to knuckle under one at a time.

What purpose does it serve to keep beating up on Venezuela?
