The 27 leaders of the European Union countries are meeting tomorrow, Thursday, in Brussels with an urgent agenda to figure out what to do with Ukraine and their own security state if the USA draws-down military support.
After years of taking little action, the EU leaders are now facing a crisis situation trying to figure out how to pay for expanded military for their own defense. The latest proposal from EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calls for €800 billion in EU defense spending, much of it from secured loans to various EU countries.
It seems rather odd to read the responses from EU leaders who are in crisis mode because they face the potential of President Trump pulling back U.S. military, and they worry about the inability to defend themselves. They act like this is a new development, while the reality is that President Trump has been repeating his warning for years.

The US has also directed the UK that it cannot share the former’s intel with Ukraine. So unless the UK or other five-eyes parties are willing to provide independent intel (or break the sharing agreement), that will not bode well for the Ukrainians.

Much of the EU and UK are in an unholy mess because of their economic situation, high energy prices, hordes of unvetted people, crime, drugs, government mismanagement and more. They should be looking to get their own house in order and not obsessed with Ukraine and Russia. I doubt President Putin is in the least interested in taking over control of the mess in Western Europe. He is also someone who is more interested in his own country and promoting patriotism something that seems to have largely disappeared across much of Europe. I have predicted the demise of the EU if they do not institute far reaching reforms – which is highly unlikely – within the next generation but it may come sooner if they keep on this road leading nowhere.

I get that if they cede these to Russia they want some guarantee that Russia won’t start again in a few years. This seems to be the reality of the situation.

After telling, extolling, exhorting, explaining, etc to the Euros for many years that their half century+ free security ride will end and they need to be grown up nations and DEFEND THEMSELVES…it’s finally time to just make them do it by minimizing our commitment. I do not advocate that we exit NATO, but the Ukraine war is a Euro war that the EU (pop 450mil) should damn well be able to handle vs Russia (pop 144mil).
Yet, Europe will do all they can to use the NATO treaty’s Article 5 to embroil the US into defending Europe, no matter what we think.
Exiting NATO will take away their false accusation we won’t honor a treaty…which they WILL use if we remain within NATO and “fail to come to their rescue”.
I believe Article 5 only applies if a NATO country is attacked/invaded. So if the EU decides to fight for Ukraine it shouldn’t trigger Article 5 and no NATO signatory has any obligation to join the fight. This is why Z and his backers want Ukraine to join NATO.
I’d like to see NATO dissolved. Should have been done years ago. Instead NATO added more countries and poked the bear. I don’t know if the US staying in NATO will stop expansion or not. Perhaps the EU should reconsider their attitude toward Russia. They don’t have to like them but they are already buying gas from them so obviously they have dealings.

This is far bigger than Ukraine. The real issue is whether the deep state will continue to control America’s foreign policy, as it has for the past three decades, and especially since 9/11. I think we should wait on everything about Ukraine until an investigation is done into the 2nd attempted assassin and his relationship to Ukraine, their gov’t, their military and our gov’t.

Every President since Ike has complained about the lack of Euro support for defense so I don’t think US support is coming back when Trump is gone. Trump did something that will be hard to undo.
In some ways, this is like Reagan inducing the Soviets to spend themselves into implosion. Europe is unwilling to give up their welfare state, their green fantasies nor their immigration policies so there is no way that they have the resources to do a major military expansion.

For the collective defense of the EU the operative method of PAYMENT is SECURED LOANS vs free hand-outs via NATO membership payments granted by the US at this time.
For the defense of the Ukraine: the UK, France and Germany are OFFERING $5-10 Billion IN LOANS that WILL be repaid in addition to the $100 Billion in LOANS they have given vs $400 Billion in free money that continues to flow given by the US.
There is not even a hint of genuine interest in securing collective defense nor defense of Ukraine unless money is made and repaid. Read Sundance’s article closely, the EU charter even limits defense spending to 1.5% of GDP, which means the US is expected to pay the bill.

The population of the collective EU is more than 2:1 vs Russia and nearly equal to population of the US.
