Facing the potential for tariffs on Mexican assembled autos, Honda has cancelled plans to invest in a new auto factory in Guanajuato, Mexico, beginning in November 2027. Instead, the car company will retool the Civic auto production facility in Greensburg, Indiana, keeping jobs in the USA.
TOKYO, March 3 (Reuters) – Honda has decided to produce its next-generation Civic hybrid in the U.S. state of Indiana, instead of Mexico, to avoid potential tariffs on one of its top-selling car models, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The change underscores how manufacturers are scrambling to adapt to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada. While several automakers have expressed concerns about the levies, Honda’s move is the first concrete measure by a major Japanese car company.
Japan’s second-largest automaker had initially planned to manufacture the next-generation Civic in Guanajuato, Mexico, according to the three people. Production was slated to start from November 2027, according to one of the people. Mexico was chosen because rising costs were making it tough to produce the car in Indiana and Canada, one of them said.
It now plans to build the new Civic model in Indiana from May 2028 with an expected annual production of around 210,000, one of the people said. Honda would look to import from nations not hit by tariffs if production in Indiana falls short of demand, one of them said. (read more)
Honda also has facilities in Georgia and Alabama. Its plant in the Peach State produces gearboxes, while the Alabama plant produces the brand’s bigger Passport and Pilot SUVs and the Ridgeline pickup and Odyssey minivan.
Separately, Honda is making investments in American production. It has committed $1 billion toward turning its Ohio facilities, including the Marysville Auto Plant, into an “EV hub.”

So tariffs do work, at least in this case, but the underlying issue of why Honda was going to Mexico in the first place cannot be skipped over. Some of it was likely labor costs, but most of these modern auto plants are so automated that the labor component in the overall cost is small.
Our deep-state regulatory terrorists have been driving manufacturing out of America since the early 1970’s with policy making (illegal law making). It was no unintended consequence. It was exactly by-design.
Both parties are in on this too since neither has any real issue with all these bureaucrats making laws. This needs to be fixed (with laws, not EO’s). Executive Orders are stop-gap at best. The GOP better get on its horse. One year from now we will be at the beginning of the 2026 mid-term cycle. Trump is doing all he can, but Congress needs to get off the sideline.
Agreed.
All other things being equal, the tariffs have to be high enough to take away the advantage of exploiting cheap labor in another country.
Too bad Indiana is such a political Sh$t hole. The Hoosier State is bleeding for 16,000 workers to fill the jobs of coding, launching, and repairing the production robots that are replacing us. I know this first hand from a local vocational school paying TOP DOLLAR to students willing to work through an accelerated plan to achieve Advanced Manufacturing Technician certificates in a fifteen month program that graduates with a two year Technology degree.
Be watching carefully the Hoosier State and establishment RINOs to make concessions on illegal immigrants to help “fill the void”… because Indiana RINOs will do NOTHING to help this country, nor will they do anything to Make America Great Again. They are globalist pigs… and they deserve to be treated as such.
We grow more than corn in Indiana… we grow dirty politicians.
Sounds about like my state.
Judas Pence is from IN, right? Puke.
Maybe the word “reciprocal” got lost in translation…
else the obtusity is astonishing.
Good luck.
The only thing I have heard we are exporting to Mexico lately is their own illegal immigrants.
But Governor castro-Trudeau still doesn’t understand how Trump Tariffs work… someone explain it to him again please poor guy’s not very bright…

This is why tariffs work. Don’t want the tariff, make it here. That’s the problem with free trade, a problem I’ve always had with “legacy” Republicans. Free trade can work if trade is balanced and selectively done between complimentary partners. However, universal free trade as a concept, puts everyone at everyone’s mercy. This is not a spot we want to be in with China.
Imagine that.. Thanks President Trump ..
That’s great news. Hopefully the rest of the Republicans, and the voters are taking notes!
Yay! Great news!
