Another thing I have noticed is when the media talks about something that I know to be true the people around me who don’t know don’t even hear that part of the broadcast – instead of hearing and learning their brain unselects that news bit as if it were a commercial to tune out. I often wonder if I do the same without realizing just on different topics?
I also recognize that my default is to believe what I am being told without questioning. So I have decided that leaving news on without actively listening can be dangerous, letting ideas seep past my conscious filter. Likewise active listening takes effort if for no other reason than to combat my anger when I know I am being lied to or manipulated.
Sometimes I wonder if those people perceived as hard hearted made a decision at some point to just accept the news unquestioning in order to make their lives easier. We live in a country where for many the only thing in the news that might affect them in an obvious way is the traffic report. Although that is changing. In recent years we’ve become so polarized that casual sharing about the news can become life defining in ways previously very rare so best to just ignore news entirely?
I recently watched an older woman try to spark conversation at a small social gathering by regurgitating a liberal slant on a news story and the response was shocking. The entire group erupted talking at once. I had already labeled myself as conservative by telling true facts from my life experience about what one of the grandchildren was likely to experience at the university she chose. But during the eruption I realized that many of the young people were also conservative and had managed to hide that about themselves during this entire social event. This level of self censorship is survival and also makes for dull social events until the liberal senior jolted everyone out of their shells. She was absolutely shocked. (Perhaps I paved the way with sharing my inconvenient truths about the university. I have the privilege to out myself since I am past working age.)

On Thursday US and Russian Diplomats had a high level meeting in Turkey. I have seen nothing of what was said during that meeting released. The press in US and Russia is mum on this important event. Embassies in Washington and Moscow still remain closed with little progress in opening.
