According to the New York Times, the IRS will begin laying off up to 6,000 staff this week.
(New York Times) – The Internal Revenue Service will begin laying off roughly 6,000 employees on Thursday as part of the Trump administration’s push to downsize the federal work force, three people familiar with the agency’s plans said.
The terminations will target relatively recent hires at the I.R.S., which the Biden administration had attempted to revitalize with a surge of funding and new staff, the people said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The Trump administration has begun laying off probationary employees — who do not enjoy as much job protection as their more tenured colleagues — across the federal government in recent days.
I.R.S. managers on Wednesday began asking employees to report to the office in the coming days and bring with them their government-issued equipment, according to messages viewed by The New York Times. The I.R.S. employs roughly 100,000 accountants, lawyers and other staff across the country. (read more)

A 6% reduction.
It’s a good start.
A 6% across-the-board reduction in income tax rates would also be a good start.
Make it 100% !
Snatched that % right outta my 👄!
End taxes.
Begin tariffs.
Recoup the illegal graft from the blob.
Make them account for their spoils — I mean millions!
Billions!
Second
Not enough!
I.R.S. managers on Wednesday began asking employees to report to the office in the coming days and bring with them their government-issued equipment
Well now, all the new hires were shirk at home employees.
I am truly heartbroken.
/s
No wonder the government thinks all our money belongs to them…
Just look at the spelling of THE IRS 🙂
Fund a mental !
Good catch!
Having worked in a government job before, I can report that the new hires do most of the work while the old timers think, decide, and enjoy. Lots of padding. Now maybe they will have to do some work.
Outstanding Mr. President!
Keep the wins coming!!
Shut it down.
National Sales Tax. Period.
You’d need a constitutional amendment for that. And there’s a lot of seniors with Roth IRAs that would hate the idea.
So exempt them up to a reasonable limit, say the national average cost of living.
No tax. Period. This explains why, better than I ever could:

No thank you. I am sick of these people with their hands in my wallet, bank account, and paycheck.
National Sales Tax = Inflation.
If INFLATION is bad for prices and the ability to afford goods, food, and necessities then why do you think that a SALES TAX is not the same result?
If inflation rises 20% then that is bad. If the federal government adds 20% onto the sales price then that is just as bad. Or do you think that since it is going to the feds then it is perfectly fine.
Both of these add to the price of everything that we purchase. If inflation is bad then why is a sales tax good? On what planet increasing the prices of products makes life more affordable for citizens?
Agree. Just look at property tax with the recent home price inflation.
I would be good with a head tax per child actually in public school. I’m single with no kids in school, used to pay $6,000 in property tax: as did my next door neighbor with 3 kids.
Never give the federal government an ability to tax we the people an additional way.
If it were the Fair Tax, it would not not be levied until the income tax was repealed.
Or State or Local
NOT additional. Replace income tax completely. A national sales tax as a replacement would mean people like Warren Buffett would get taxed on spending instead of avoiding it through legal gymnastics. The drug dealer down the street can hide his cash income, but pays anyway when he spends. As a replacement for income tax it’s not a bad idea.
Oh, hell no.
“It”? There are two of them: The Internal Revenue Service and the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service Office of the Commissioner is in DC, and the Commissioner of Internal Revenue Department of the Treasury IRS is in Holtsville, NY. Shut them both down! Most Americans do not have federal income, so why pay federal income tax?
Far cry from the 87,000 agents, armed agents, slojo wanted to hire.
Hiring and training new Revenue Agents takes about 18 months. Obviously the IRS did not have the ability to hire 86,000 new agents at once. This is probably the initial crop.
I don’t know how many they actually hired, but a slew of them were here in northern Utah
“…..the IRS will begin laying off up to 6,000 staff this week.”
Proverbial drop in the bucket. However, it’s a start. A good start. And, as they say, every journey begins with that first step.
I thought Tump told them to report to the office weeks ago?
Think there was a date…after all, if you’ve been living a few thousand miles away from the office in which you are supposed to work, it takes time to make arrangements. A young couple I know have “worked” from the ski slopes of Vail, the beaches of Cancun or wherever their hearts desired for the past few years…renting their condo out in DC. It certainly was a sweetheart deal while it lasted.
I have expressed outrage several times (here at The Tree) about teachers on the beach in Hawaii “zoom” instructing with a maitai in hand.
I went into my classroom every day during COVID. My kids were on camera, but I sat at my desk so they could see me– and I taught!
8 of us out of a very large middle school staff– taught out of our classrooms daily.
There is integrity, and then there is bull 💩.
I know there are circumstances that challenged staff with young children at home.
However, there were plenty who sat on their butts, and did not earn their pay.
I retire in June. I am teaching, creating new assignments, and delivering on my promise to teach “my” children every day.
There are plenty of people across this great country (in a variety of fields) who deliver every day.❤️🤍💙
I love America. I have lived in a variety of states — and in Europe — throughout my long life.
I love my country. I admire the grit of those in cities, and in rural areas.
God bless, you precious citizens– each and everyone of you! 💕🇺🇸
And.. a big sloppy 💋 from me to you!
And one from me too! 😀
Thank you
Happy retirement, Lorrie.
May you enjoy this next phase of your life. Thank you for being one of the really good teachers.
I’m a retired teacher. I enjoyed working with teachers like you.
I used to tell my student teachers, “You have to really, really love working with kids, because they will do their best to make you hate it.” It was a very rewarding career.
Enjoy your retirement.
Good for you!
Integrity counts.
Good luck as you close your out your career this year.
Sounds like your kids are losing a wonderful influence in their lives, but congratulations on your upcoming retirement. May it be long and happy 🥰
God bless you, Lorrie. Integrity and teaching should be synonymous, you have made it so in your case.
Just think – just a very few weeks ago, FedGov employees were offered a sweetheart of a deal –
8 months of pay, no more work… with a resignation date set for Sept 30th.
Think about how many FedGov unions gaslit their members:
“Hold fast”
“Scare tactics”
“No reason to panic”
– Just so the union leaders could continue to get all those union dues each paycheck – and live on easy street.
I wonder how many of those employees are wishing now they had lived in realville…
Looked at this situation with logic…
And took the government buyout.
Everything DJT is doing is amazing.
I think I read elsewhere that only 3% took the buyout.
So the answer to your wondering is a staggering 97% who were too stupid to catch on.
Probably sitting on a beach somewhere and missed the notice! Such is life! 🙂
Most IRS agents conduct audits at the taxpayer’s business office not at the IRS office.
Joe, that was not my experience.
Had to visit the IRS Auditor’s office twice – in the G.H. Fallon Federal Building at Hopkins Plaza in downtown Baltimore. This was maybe 35 or 40 years ago.
Second visit was a charm as my original deduction was upheld once I brought in a specific old document to prove my claim. But that required me to take off from work, drive downtown, pay for parking (no, the IRS did not cover the parking garage fee) and generally waste half a day each time.
Charley Reese 545 People Vs We The People and his famous Tax Poem
https://menofgodandcountry.com/charley-reeses-final-column-for-the-orlando-sentinel/
Excerpt on Congress
:”Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.. ( The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.)”
Pretty great insight from Charley from the 1980’s. Pat Buchanan and him were the two early on who exposed me to the Uniparty Hegelian Dialectic political system here.
The External Revenue Service ….YES!!
If he’s a liberal, then you could probably tell him that you think he crapped his drawers.
.. and he’d likely leave to check.
Not me personally. The libtards I know never heard of Dylann Roof.
They just know Trump is Hitler.
I was telling liberals that Trump won the Daytona 500 just to see them blow a gasket .
Now that’s what I call a genuine inflation reduction act.
Add them to the already horrible job market and we probably will have an unemployment rate of close to 30% when they finally unfinagle all the numbers and put a legit unemployment rate out there…the only solace I have as someone looking for a job is that no smart business will hire a former government worker…
I am mentoring a computer engineer as a new hire in the government. He is a very bright young person with a fantastic work ethic. He is in the probationary stage and may lose his job. It would be a shame for the government to lose him. He would be a wonderful addition to any company.
Don’t be so quick to paint all government employees as no good. I work with many who are very good and work hard. That includes free work after hours at night and on the weekends when needed.
He will easily find a good job elsewhere. Unfortunately the spoiled lazy older workers will struggle.
I think it’s actually a personal integrity trait. I too worked with government employees that worked unpaid overtime, although they were entitled to claim it, and didn’t take extended lunch if they took lunch break at all.
Then there were the complete opposite ones that were never at their desk and would try to get others to do their work.
It’s work ethics and personal responsibility.
He will do better in private sector. A smart hire like him will be hamstrung by the status quo.
The only consolation is non entry and (hopefully) self-deportation of illegals. Now we need to skinny down the various work visas.
100% work visa need to GO. I am on X threads with so many unemployed tech workers that are really struggling…the h1b’s have (literally) taken over the entire tech industry…these are people who have been out of the work force for over a year due to visa’s taking over the industry. I don’t ever want to hear we are lacking STEM talent here after all the stories I have heard over there..It infuriates me…
And tomorrow I have an appointment to
get my taxes done!🤦♀️
Hoping that I don’t have to wait a long
time to get my tax refund back this year😖😵💫
I am just going to expect it to take a very long time.
lol.🤣🤣
I will have to see how long it takes this year
versus previous years.
Should be interesting……..
If you are waiting on a tax refund , you have bigger problems obviously. Most of us pay in at tax time.
First time in decades that I was due a refund…and it will post to my bank account tomorrow:) Yay me!
Depreciation is “real and amazing.” All those congress couches know it, yet they act like President Trump is the only one who utilizes a perfectly legal deduction.
Example: You pay yourself 10 million a year, and you have a $100 MM real estate portfolio. You take $2.5MM off the top.
No doubt the IRS will take its pique out on you. I think the Social Security folks got their revenge on us this month.
It would be interesting to know what the equipment was – to be returned – staplers, printers, laptops?
Weapons?
Guns?
Guns in some cases and ammo. (probably cell phones and some govt vehicles.)
“And yes, the IRS did recently buy nearly $700,000 in ammunition, but that’s nothing new for the IRS-CI. From 2010 to 2017, the IRS spent a yearly average of $675,000 on ammunition. In fact, the 2022 ammunition expenditure is down from the agency’s peak of $1,100,000 in 2011. An armed criminal investigations division is not a new trend.”
“An armed criminal investigations division is not a new trend.”

Because a crooked book keeper with a #2 pencil is a dangerous criminal.
That’s funny, my first image was of John Wick with a pencil… but then I got the reference about a crooked bookkeeper…
Computers and cell phones.
Omgosh doesn’t he look cute in that scarf! Great pic 😍
Dang! I was really looking forward to an audit this year. Oh, well!
I hear they can find work in Hawaii:
Laid Off Federal Workers: Hawaiʻi Governor Wants You For State Vacancies – Honolulu Civil Beat
Typically only native Hawaiian islanders get those jobs and the Governor knows that!
That may be true, but the Governor is a racist, conmunist demoncrat. He will gladly deny his own constituents a job if it means helping out a fellow traveler.
Was the testimony of ol Lois Lerner ground zero for the conservative movement ? was that when we said, Ive had enough ?
I wrote thiis in 2010:
Obama got off easy but he did some really bad things. I was a big TEA Party guy here in small city in California. Tea Party here was vocal and big and I was so excited to join back before 2010. We had many street corner rallies then welcomed the big House victory in 2010. But gradually the Tea Party just went away and I could at the time not figure out what was going on. I tried to call the local President but her phone was disconnected. I could not find any members. I tried to find out what was going on by contacting the national TEA Party office but no response. I was befuddled by the demise of the Tea Party. Later I found out why. Obama weaponized the IRS. Remember Lois Lerne. I never really found out what happened to our local TP president but when she filed for tax-exempt status she probably got some kind of nasty letter or call from the IRS that scared the hell out of her and she went quiet. This man Obama is and was totally evil. He used every means necessary to keep and stay in power but finally we are seeing some light shed on his illegal activities. May 2010.
Steam roll the corrupt irs.😀
Years ago the IRS notified me I could not claim my son who was 8 years old. I called the IRS office in Philadelphia and got a very helpful employee. He said to me ” I know it’s your son that you have claimed for years but just comply with their request and save yourself a headache”.
I had a similar issue a few years ago. Fought it, and won. It took years, but it was worth it to know I did not “just comply”.
I was young and dumb. My son is 40 years old now.
Waiting for President Trump to issue an EO which declares the IRS a home grown.terrorist organization.
I know multiple people personally who were patriots and criticized the local Democrat crime syndicates calling themselves “government” who than had the IRS Gestapo sicked on them.
The only agency which makes its own “laws”, interprets those laws, and enforces them.
How is that constitutional?
Don’t know if you saw Pete Hegseth said that the moment his nomination for DoD Secretary was announced that the IRS ambushed him with an audit….
I can well believe it, Colkitto.
Better put the Corps in that same bucket.
The “rules” are interpretated every day.
S a civil engineer, I’ve dealt with them all over Texas, especially East Texas.
Lived in East Texas for years, Eagle. I get it.
Actually all the kudzu bureaucracy does that.
My heart feels like an alligator.
What does an alligator feel like?
I like that analogy.
It should be the title of a song.
But I’m notvsure what it means.
Heh heh. She thought it was all over with her.
Get rid of all of them and get rid of the IRS. Replace it with a consumption tax which is fair for everyone. Everyone is treated the same. Have exemptions for food, clothing and medicine. Tax is settled at the register. Super simple. No need to report your life to the IRS every year. That with tariffs and a massively downsized government should be more than enoug
“Tax is settled at the register.”
Not very efficient with that many points of sale. Collect the tax during manufacture, as is done with the Value Added Tax frequently seen in Europe. And if you want to model the VAT system, fine. But only after…..AFTER the IRS is competency disbanded.
It’s a sales tax. My state has a sales tax. It can be handled the same way. It’s not a vat tax. . No need to complicate things.
The VAT is a silent thief that steals from you at every possible point in an item’s manufacturing process. The point of sale Fair tax (on new retail sales only) is obvious and up front. Read all about it in the books by Neal Boortz. It would not go into effect until after the repeal if the 16th Amendment.
No no and no.
Inflation increases the price of goods which makes products more Unaffordable. A sales tax does the same thing.
BOTH increase prices. If inflation is bad then a sales tax is bad.
Technically it’s a wash. Like robbing peter of a dollar to pay paul…there’s still just a dollar. If my tax bill is reduced, and .gov expenditures are reduced then it won’t matter. A dollar is still a dollar. The price increases you speak of will be met with less demand IF the fedgov (and by extension state govs) is reduced. If you simply saw a price increase with no commensurate reduction elsewhere (via demand destruction) then yes there would be inflation.
Plus then “you” might be motivated to consume less, and produce more on your own
I don’t think it would be a wash at all. I can’t imagine spending so much money on products other than food clothing and medicine to even come close to spending what my income taxes are now.
lol we would get to keep all of our income. If you don’t want to pay as much tax you don’t spend as much. Simple. Unlike now where the more you make the more you are punished. Yes yes and yes.
And it applies to only NEW ITEMS and food and clothes below a certain value are also exempt.
Let’s see the “massively downsized government” first
I think -99% would be about right” about 25,000
I don’t care. I just want to keep my money
I hate for anyone to loose their employment & I really want to feel bad about this.
However, what continues to resonate in my head is that Washington DC & the immediate surrounding areas voted for Harris/Walz at a 92% clip. This is a heavily coddled area where there is NO diversity of political beliefs & is a cesspool of liberal/regressive mindset.
This said, let these liberals find work in the private sector & discover what it’s like to be hired & excel based on your merit & qualifications, not just your zip code. Good Luck!
“I hate for anyone to loose their employment & I really want to feel bad about this.”
Sounds just like the words from politicians who managed to create policy that outsourced American jobs overseas.
How many unemployed Americans living in economically depressed areas like the Rust Belt are going to weep at night with the thought of these government hacks getting canned?
My thoughts too. I’m thrilled with them losing their jobs. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy
“This said, let these liberals find work in the private sector & discover what it’s like to be
hired”……fired because of fallout from some politicians economic or regulatory policy that the now unemployed had no influence in creating.
We are fixing to add diversity to the DC area. Have you seen a Zillow map of DC lately? The only negative, is that those people are moving into the interior of the country.
Hear! Hear!
In my area of northern Utah, 5% of workers work for the Feds. I’m not feeling too sympathetic.
Yes it’s like the people in the hunger games being out of power. I think it’s glorious!
Pretend is becoming reality. Federal employ is not a guarantee to lifetime employment.
Are they laying off the low level employees at the Cincinnati Field Office?
Bye, bye!
One of my work mates brother in law was laid off from the IRS last week. He said there are employees that he works with that he’s never seen in a meeting or at the office.
Every IRS employee who is DELINQUENT on his/her federal taxes should be the first group thrown out on the street.
Garnish whatever payout they get to pay their taxes first. That way they will feel like the rest of us! LOL!
These probationary employees have no union protection against termination.
The NTEU (National Treasury Employees Union) seems to be pushing back against the DOGE audits, and they also caved quickly to the Whitehouse demand for forced vaccinations. Basically they became a company union.
Years ago they were anti-grift and pro law enforcement. Sad.
Christmas all over again!! Yay!!
Please forgive me as I don’t want to appear ungrateful, however sixty-thousand is a number we could truly celebrate.
The IRS has extraordinary police powers which should never have been granted in the first place, and definitely should be eliminated entirely.
Any government agency that has been weaponized against US citizens must be eliminated or stripped to the absolute bare minimum.
Tax court is the only court in which you have to prove your innocence. It is a travesty.
Yes, along with other constitutional violations, yet our con-gress has done nothing for decades.
60,000 would still be just a start. The kudzu civilian Federal workforce is between 2.2M and 3M.
Agreed.
Hadn’t Biden just hired 87,000 or so, some to be armed?
Well to hire and train an IRS agent, and have them up and running on the job takes about two years. First they apply on USA jobs. Submit documents. Be assessed . Background investigation. Six months training at FLETC. Then OJT. Yes, two years for an off-the-street hire. No way could they hire more than a few hundred at a time Plus the job pays little.
Maybe the 87K that Biden hired didn’t have to go through all that – or even really work – maybe it was just a way to send checks to Øbama’s military age illegals who will comprise his terrorist army.
Maybe a lot of federal employees that work from home are the same sort of hires…just get a check and other benefits until they are given orders to cause trouble.
No telling how many terrorist cells the US taxpayer is subsidizing.
We do know that money was going to Hamas and pallets of cash to Iran by Obammy.
Exactly!
A friend of mine joked over dinner that if ever you were going to cheat on your taxes, this is the year!
Elbridge Colby for Undersecretary of Defense…tell your state senators.
There are signs that the apparently indiscriminate probationary status employee terminations are not intended to improve government efficiency. (doGE, remember?)
There is no effort to keep high performers who could support efficiency improvements, in fact it is reported that some of the termination notices sent to those with top performance reviews say they are being terminated for poor performance.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/02/17/trump-fires-federal-workers-performance/
Strictly on a spending reduction basis: Government employees are about 4% of total budget, so cutting 10% of them only nets 0.4% reduction in spending. That’s hardly more than rounding error.
If it’s not for efficiency improvements, and it’s not for significant spending reduction, then what is going on?
The cuts appear to be intended to drive fear and anxiety, cause disruption and suffering, dissuade new talent from joining the government, and trigger lawsuits.
Top performance reviews do not always mean top performers.
My observation during my 30 years of Federal service is that outstanding reviews, qsi’s (quality step increases) etc have a strong tendency to be awarded to girlfriends and fishing buddies.
Same in private corporations.
Alas, you first fire the ones you can fire most easily. If Congress had not made it sob difficult to fire so many government employees, things might be different. Of course the probationary workers work harder–they want that permanent status.
However, every bureaucrat cut, also reduces the harm they spread. Think of the number of regulations the “Biden” administration foisted on us.
Put the remaining agents on the task of finding out who has been cashing SS checks to people older than 120 years.
There are assets that need to be seized/recovered. Set IRS criminal investigators to the task asap. There are some good ones.
Now hie a out cutting some of those opulent pensions?

Can we have our bullets and guns back, now?
Obama reduced the difficulty for Federal bureaucrats to not only obtain guns and ammo, but purchased it for them. At the same time, the FED in many sizes and flavors are making it MORE difficult for common taxpaying citizens to have guns and obtain ammo.
Should’ve took the pay out til 9/30 and been the first to grab the dwindling job opportunities.
The MSM will phrase such cutbacks as the worst thing in the world. They love them some I.R.S. This is how contrary they are when an R does it.
I got the Hegseth treatment from the IRS. My donations to the Trump campaign got me a bill for $12,000 that I don’t owe anybody
At least 81,000 more (hired by F. Joe BIden) to go!
That guy on the right behind her looks familiar. Is he that Jack guy that was trying to put President Trump in Jail?
I’m all for the EXTERNAL Revenue Service
Full on panic over at DOD. According to friends, Hegseth sent out a memo requiring a list of probationary employees (less than 12 months) and indicated DOD has to hit an 8% budget reduction.which is probably around $60B give or take.
Most of those probies took govt jobs when Biden stuffed the ranks in 2024. The Biden regime just assumed all those New Democrats would pay them back with votes and donations.
I hope that toe rag Lois Lerner is getting ready to lose everything. I don’t remember O or O’biden giving her a pardon.
I am sure we can find something that hasn’t timed out.
Yes, she and hussein’s treasury secretary who owed on his taxes.
I was enjoying this post until I got to the picture of that vile, ugly thru and thru, demented, despicable, detestable…
In case you did not understand it, I really don’t like her.
