President Trump held an Executive Order (XO) press conference in the oval office today and took questions from the assembled press pool. Included in the executive orders was the reversal of the plastic straw ban, no more paper straws. The President also implemented a 25% tariff rate on imported steel. The import tariff rate for aluminum increases from 10% to 25%.
At 09:00 of the video, President Trump reads prepared remarks on the implementation of the steel tariffs. At approximately 15:00 of the video, President Trump begins taking questions from the media. The full video of the event is below:
.
(Via NBC) – President Donald Trump signed an order Monday that imposes a 25% tariff on all steel imports to the United States.
“This is a big deal,” Trump said while signing the order in the Oval Office. “The beginning of making America rich again.”
[…] Canada is the largest supplier of steel to the U.S., followed by Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam.
Trump has floated the idea of reciprocal, tit-for-tat tariffs. According to analysts with the Capital Economics consultancy, such a scenario would, in essence, see Trump taking a more “measured” approach to trade negotiations if the threat of an across-the-board tariff, which Trump has previously mooted, is eliminated. no bicentennial penny
limited rdition.
Remake the 1976 quarter.
maybe they will make pennies from steel instead.
that was done in 1943, due to ww2 copper conservation
” 1943 steel cents are U.S. one-cent coins that were struck in steel due to wartime shortages of copper. The Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints each produced these 1943 Lincoln cents. The unique composition of the coin (low-grade steel coated with zinc, instead of the previously 95%-copper-based bronze composition) has led to various nicknames, such as wartime cent, steel war penny, zinc cent and steelie. The 1943 steel cent features the same Victor David Brenner design for the Lincoln cent which had been in use since 1909″.- wiki
The Penny’s are made of two zinc alloys a core and a copper colored cladding.
Make coins great again!
How about $1.00, $5.00, $10,00, $20.00 and $50.00 coins that have that much silver or gold or platinum value in them!
How about silver and gold certificate paper bills.
Make it real! To heck with digital!
This would be amazing
A $5.00 gold coin today would be about the size of a grain of rice!
Looks like this is about on track, then: https://www.goldback.com/exchange-rate
I Second this motion!
Ever notice the 0.9 penny
added to every gallon of fuel?
Ex. 3.55 and 9/10ths of cent per gallon
It’s been going on for decades.
Does that make it common sense? or nonsense? (not even a full penny of cents)
It seems like an opportunity to simplify pricing, to knock off the 9/10th cent (or round up to nearest penny).
p.s.
The Lord knows, that there are much, MUCH bigger things to accomplish…. than the 9/10th of cent on fuel topic.
That is the same as pricing items at a retail store $XX.99. It is a psychological gambit to make you think you are paying less. $19.99 sounds less than $20 because the mind hears $19. When talking to someone about gas prices, $2.86 is quoted, not $2.869. In a tank of gas, it adds maybe $0.20-$0.30, but over the number of cars in a day/week/year, the extra is significant.
Blame the Fed Gov via the Revenue Tax Act of 1932.
https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/643539/reason-gas-stations-charge-910-cent
Inflation on our money destroyed the value of the penny. … Pennies had actual value not too long ago. … Prices are NOT really going up so much, as the value of US Money is being destroyed. … When I was younger, I spoke with old geezers that actually received $20 gold pieces in their weekly pay envelope.
…….. [I was also told beer was a 5cents a mug in a bar with a ‘free lunch’ included, back in those days. … On paydays, the salty, sliced salami and bread was fresh. ……. In 1978, the move Every Which Way But Loose, shows ‘free peanuts’ in a local bar in >California.]
The 5cent nickel supposedly costs 13 cents to make. Is it next?
Steel made in the USA, what a concept.
I’m close to Hamilton, Ontario Canada. Steel City. Unemployment rates are going to soar! I’m laughing so hard. Canadians just can’t help themselves when voting Liberal. Now they are receiving the fruits of that insanity. Good luck with that folks who just wanted to show the world how civilized they were by voting for a govt that wouldn’t stand for mean tweets! How is that virtue signaling working out for you?
DD
Jordan Peterson summed it up…it’s easy to virtue signal when you share a border with the biggest nuclear power on the planet.
100%! Another Canadian here and as much as I don’t want to see the suffering, the only way these “nice” folks will wake up is to feel it in the pocketbook bigly. Bring on the pain! Mind you, Canada will probably blame Trump while living in mass encampments before realizing that our so called Leaders have squandered wealth for decades and they, their children and children’s children will suffer the consequence of their pacifism!

Out here in British Columbia we have even crazier TDS afflicted individuals.
Great times!
“Grass Beyond The Mountains”. A BC rancher’s story, circa 1940.
Good book. Puts you right there, with a Winchester lever action on the wagon seat as you drive the horses through the last pass to a lush valley where you’ll build your future ranch.
Starmer in Britain is cwying big time.
Trouble is that British steel making started dying a prolonged death circa mid to late 70s. Final gasps with the closing of the last blast furnace in Port Talbot in 2016 after years of decline and cheap imports in 2024….
Don’t know why he has his knickers in a twist. His cult worship of Net Zero is killing off the rest of Blighty.
Carry on, Mr President.
America First.
Sheffield steel used to be pretty damn good.
President Trump has done more Oval Office Pressers in the first month than Slo Joe did in four years!! Heck, most of the time, they wouldn’t even let Joe into the Oval Office, but made him go to the phony mock-up Old Executive tent across the street!!
I wonder if President Trump and his team could find out exactly why FJB had that fake Oval Office. I suspect it’s because the real leader/s of the US were occupying it. How much did we the taxpayers have to pay for that stage?
Ask the SS
Amen!!
There was plenty of fast corruption and evil being done that wasn’t being revealed to the public. President Trump is now fast tracking the undoing all of that work now at a much more incredible pace.
that’s cuz a rothhchild was sitting behind the genuine resolute
How many federal workers showed up for work today?
I can’t find a report anywhere!
Hmmm?
And we didn’t miss them at all !
Probably 5%, the usual but they decided to stand outside and protest against an audit.
Well I know the IRS building next door to my work in Franklin, TN is basically empty. I took pics yesterday and sent an email to the DOGE committee. It’s a 5 story fairly new building (2014) with a huge parking lot in back of it totally empty. Been empty since 2020.
I’m not holding my breath in hearing back from the House DOGE committee. The return response email header subject line: Houe DOGE Committee. They cant even spell check.
Glad he nixed the Japan takeover of USSteel! I worked the Mon Valley steel mills in the 60’s and 70’s! Made some nice money back then!
As you so very well know,
All steel is not created equally.
Japan knows steel.
Germany knows steel.
The US knows steel.
China don’t know steel.
Trust God.
Fear not.
If China does not know steel. Why are countries lining up to buy steel from them?
China is the worlds largest producer of steel and produces over half of the worlds supply.
China produces over 1 billion tons of steel a year. Even with a 25% steel tariff in the USA that is A world production record no body can match.
So China does know a thing or 2 about steel.
The Hardware and Alloys Coming out of China HAS BEEN JUNK.
They STOLE the Formulas / COULD NOT POUR ” VERTICAL ” CASTINGS and Until Recently
the CCP HAD TO Rely on RUSSIAN, AMERICAN and EUROPEAN AIRCRAFT ENGINES Because Their Metallurgy WAS JUNK.

If you want quality tools get USA made. But they may be made with imported Chinese steel base stock.
US imports about 1/4 of the steel we use. Most comes from China, with Mexico and Canada acting as middle men to avoid Tariffs.
But that has all changed with President Trump putting Tariffs on all imported Steel and Aluminum. Looks like prices will be going up. Until We build more Steel Mills and Aluminum Smelters to cover the large amount of both metals we import.
China does not pay Tariffs. You and I, the end consumer, pay the Tariff.
No.
I spent 12 years in Pgh.
Hard working people. Most I knew has a side gig. Holdover from the pain of the ’80s.
Yinz R some good folk.
The population went from near 750k circa 1970 to around 350k nowadays. Also, think of the current condition of the small mill towns along the Monongahela and Allegheny Valleys. I know of this living on the other side of PA with fall of Bethlehem Steel.

Should get the shut down lead smelting plants operating again.
It better cover steel and aluminum products, otherwise manufactured products come in without tariff, and US producers have to pay higher rolled steel costs.
BEYOND GLAD to SEE The GREAT Dr. Peter Navarro There in the Oval Office !
Making tariffs great again!
Make Straws Great Again!
I give Premier Ford (below) a 10 out 10 for bravado. But punching a 600 pound gorilla when you are a 50 pound gorilla usually doesn’t end well. And when you have a PM still leading the attack that has aligned himself with Trump’s political enemies and has agreed with all of the proven hoaxes against him since 2015 et al, the gorilla will definitely be motivated.
The USA’s 2024 GDP was $26.88 trillion in PPP terms (Purchasing Power Parity) and an initial estimate of $27.606 trillion for 2025. Canada’s GDP is appx $ 2.2 trillion. There are other legitimate reasons why smaller more vulnerable countries have agreed to P Trump’s demands. Even China takes a measured approach. Once reality sinks in, the angry protesting stage ends in a reluctant agreement before serious harm is done.
I think there are already too many crowded food banks and tent cities in Canada but if Canada’s Premiers are super confident they can win a trade war with the USA and not inflict more economic damage on Canada than the tariffs would, then they will be gambling Canada’s economic well being on a certain victory that will be Trump’s 1st ever trade war capitulation. I suspect Canada will target industries in the swing states including auto makers etc. in the hope it will lead to tariffs in sectors where workers ignored their union bosses and voted for Trump. An extended temporary layoff of these workers not be welcomed by any of them. Miracles do happen I guess but Trump capitulating does not seem likely.
Bombastic Ford is right about most Canadians’ will to fight because we are more like Americans than most realize. We have lived side by side for well over a century and Americans have positively influenced Canadians enormously. I don’t know if there is any interest on the American side. We grew up on American TV shows, movies, news etc and fought together in foreign lands, played cross border baseball and hockey tournaments and on and on.
ie. Our All Star team crossed the border and played your league teams to a draw mostly although the best player in the tournament was a Canadian who pitched the hardest and the best and also hit homers including one over the fence and out of sight into distant trees. (He chose law and became the chief prosecutor for the Air India bombing)
On June 15, 1846, Britain and the United States signed the Treaty of Oregon establishing the 49th parallel as the primary international boundary in the Pacific Northwest. It was naively considered the world’s longest undefended border but radical Islam and other similar threats have changed that forever. The separation and distrust between our countries will only increase with this trade war. Why couldn’t P Trump wait until agitator Trudeau is gone in a few weeks and the pending election is over? If Poilievre is elected, I’m fairly certain he and P Trump would have a good relationship and both parties could work out a fair deal for both sides rather than an actual bitter trade war that will increase hostilities
The “buy Canadian” movement is expanding daily across Canada with stickers on products, “Holiday in Canada” and so on. Mostly grocery items to start but it has spread to department stores etc. and the tourist industry . Smaller items compared to steel but combined some American businesses will definitely he hard hit–but so will Canada without a doubt. Some “short term pain” is what the billionaire President called it but any American (and Canadian) workers without sufficient cash in their savings account to tide them over will not be happy-especially the new swing state voters.
I don’t believe this was unavoidable but we’ll never know. The tariff interference during our national election is a nasty trick that will be remembered and one that could lead to a worse Liberal PM than Trudeau.
Hello friend from the Great White North,
Like you, I grew up near the border, in Western New York, on the American side of the Falls you might say (not Niagara Falls itself but pretty close to that area). So my family watched both American and Canadian TV, listened to both American and Canadian radio, visited Canada lots of times in the summer … are you familiar with the old Crystal Beach? Marineland and Game Farm? Watched hockey. Watched “Phantom of the Opera” in Toronto … Wow! … visited the Science Centre … I could go on … And my grandpa was a Toronto Blue Jays fan.
I’m hoping for a time in the not too distant future when the dust from all the politics settles and would love to visit Canada again! 🙂
Make America Great Again … and Make Canada Great Again! God bless both countries! I’m thinking that if we in both our respective nations live our best lives, it will work out best for all of us.
I have similar memories but on the B.C./Washington border.
The dust from this will not likely be settled in my lifetime but I and we have endured far worse but not from people we naively thought of as friends. We were always just potential buyers and commodities to Americans, at least those with the massive power.
This bitter split and distancing might end well for Canada in the long run .
“those with the massive power” … yeah, that I can see as applying to some folks.
We are a lost nation..the vitriol and hatred spewed from our CBC ( state sponsor) T.V. will never stop the hate.
Unless one attended the massive rally’s for freedom, and experienced being ostracized they can never imagine how we feel betrayed.
Only a fool goes back to that..
Cheers!
Well Dekester,
Your post resonates in amazingly eerie and parallel ways, especially given the timing. Yesterday I avoided the Superbowl, only watching a news clip here or there … but tonight right before coming here and seeing your post, I went and watched the half-time show based on a prophet’s perception of it, and in particular, the themes of the need for healing, harmony, and “TURN OFF THE TV !!!!!” … (apologies for the caps, it is in fact meant to communicate and emphasize the shouted rapper lyrics from the half-time show).
Let’s just say I can personally relate to what you describe, and that your words serve as confirmation, and for that I thank you.
Mark Carney will probably be the next leader of the Liberal Party. He is insane for climate change programs and will carbon tax everything he can. He will be 100x worse than Trudeau.
Yes, it would have been nice if Trump had waited until Canada had its election and Conservative Polievre elected Prime Minister. Then maybe some of the financial hardship about to descend upon Canadians could have been somewhat alleviated.
Ditto–but unrestrained superior power rarely waits to unleash itself on weaker people or nations.
Big Power also loves to blame the weaker opponent–ie “they deserve it, they’ve taken advantage of us “
Here at our British Columbian border into the U.S.just 5 minutes from our house, a monument at the border has emblazoned across its top.
“ Children of a Common Mother “
Sadly that is no longer the case.
That said this British Columbian is far more MAGA and feel zero loyalty to Canada.
I was threatened with arrest for attending Trucker Rally’s at the same border…
Naw..my country is a fascist
State.
Fortunately millions of us know it, and we are pro Trump and F**k Trudeau.
I enjoyed following and supporting Trump since 2015 but he has turned me into an opponent that needs to side with his country Canada.
I will respectfully restrain myself from writing out my harshest opinion of Trudeau but I agree with you. I was hoping Poilievre would win the election but it’s likely Trump’s insouciant intervention in the early stages of our national election will lead to WEF, Davos loving Carney being elected. He will fully align with the EU.
MAGA is fabulous for America but not for anyone else which is their right. I don’t think even the worst stage of Trudeau came anywhere close to the depravity of the Democrat party. P Trump only has 4 years and then it’s possible the Democrats will have found better ways to cheat in an election or the people might have turned on Trump in the swing states if Canada targets them in this tariff fight as they plan to. If layoffs happen in those states due to this tariff battle and they somehow last long enough that some workers lose their homes of other perks the Dems will win and I would never want to live in a country with that looney, corrupt party in charge.
The likely ending could be short as PM Carney capitulates so he can concentrate his main focus on the “existential threat of climate change.” His CC policies will subvert freedoms and impoverish Canada far more than Trudeau did or the Trump tariffs will and they will do serious damage if it doesn’t end quick.
Thank you for your thoughtful post.
I am in daily contact with many late twenty and thirty
Year olds. ( I am in my mid sixties)
They despise Trudeau the Liberals, Dog Meat Singh ( their term)
The watch podcasts, Peterson, Rogan, the well brothers etc.
They watched the horror of the tyranny directed at peaceful patriotic Canadians during the Scamdemic.
They know all about Trudeau’s “ foundation” linked to vaccines🤮
Arlan..these folks are not coming back to “ go along to get along”
Carney was in charge of the Bank of England for goodness sake. These youngsters know that…they didn’t get from their propaganda media.
Senior citizens in the majority still believe the pablum..fortunately the majority of the under 40 crowd would join the U.S.
Once betrayed ( and we were) F**k em!
Cheers!
Oops..Welk Brothers. ( it’s getting late)
Bull. You folks pride yourselves on how DIFFERENT you are from Americans right up to the point where you need something from the U.S. Then it’s all about how close we are. Your scumbag slutpup of a PM and his fat, ugly sidekick Freeland left the U.S. in no doubt about what you thought of us, and it wasn’t anything good. Well, you wanted to be unfriendly, no problem. You’ve managed it.
Just remember one thing: that street goes both ways.
“Why can’t we all just get along …?” Oops.
Canada: America’s largest national park. America’s hat!
How about we just close the border with Canada completely and leave it shut for six months? Let’s see what chubby loudmouth Ford has to say then…if the Canadians haven’t eaten him by that point!
almost time to melt down the pre-1982 copper penny hoard now?

Absolutely NOT!!!!
Now that is a Spit Ball Canon!! 🙂

This set isn’t about the taxes so much as the national security.
Would China deliberately ship us low quality steel for our Destroyers, Aircraft Carriers, and F 22’s?
Yes.
In fact, it almost certainly already did.
Pentagon. Bribery.
Enemies, foreign and domestic.
I really don’t understand what’s going on here … it appears that this press conference is actually occurring within(!) “The Oval Office!”
I thought that this was supposed to be a “television set,” and that there was supposed to be “a teleprompter.”
🤡
Here’s hoping for the comeback of the incandescent light bulb …
Yes. I want my lightbulbs back!
the phoenix I have an incandescent stash from when all the bulb nonsense began.
As we have seen after the first PDJT term, executive orders can and will be undone almost immediately by a successor.
What’s needed (and desperately) is for congress to legislate these orders so that they are harder to undo.
Yes.
To the last sentence:
Let’s make a deal
Hopefully that will be easily accomplished
once the guilty
know that their not so legal deeds
are known
-with receipts.
Then again, hopefully the really bad and dirty ones will be gone; broke, jailed and broken, so that President Trump’s work lives on.
Fun fact: Canada doesn’t even make steel. All the “Canadian steel” is Chinese steel that undergoes value added processing in Canada (stamping, forming, forging, machining.)
STRAWS…That may not seem important, however, my husband was in horrible health as he entered that last year of a 5 year battle with saliva gland cancer and Parkinson disease. Straws were his lifeline to nutrition and shorter paper straws were a real frustration and didn’t allow for broth or anything else to be easily consumed. My husband was in real trouble and couldn’t eat at all. He choose to not get a feeding tube.
I bought steel straws but they didn’t bend and he couldn’t get them to work.
Who ever has returned us to plastic straws, I thank YOU.
🙏 … what an ordeal for both of you … now he is at Peace.
Regarding aluminum, Nathan Rothschild destroyed the UK’s aluminum business a few decades ago and made a mint doing it.
This makes the choice of aluminum for one of the first tariffs quite interesting.
Have a look at this article from 2011:

Nathan Rothschild, Peter Mandelson, Deripaska, Rusal, South African platinum kingdom, and a Canadian gold magnate.
President Trump understands the players.
BTW, gold futures just broke $2,950.
And – remember that flash crash “error” when Barrack Gold went to zero? Along with a few other important stocks? Yeah . . . was that a hint of coming attractions for Canadian gold magnates?
Wakey wakey.
*For anyone not already aware who might be enticed, the paper gold stocks are just that – just paper. If you can’t hold it, you most likely will find out you don’t own it. Not financial advice, merely opinion.
Speaking of Gold. I wonder if DOGE will ever do an audit on our Nation’s Gold Reserves?
When Trump ran for President in 2016 he talked about an Audit of our gold when on the campaign trail.
After he was elected? Nothing. No mention of Gold. No audit.
Now with all the audits going on. Maybe I missed it. But No Mention of Gold from DOGE or President Trump.
Have our gold bars been replaced with ETFs, Certificates. and IOUs? It would be interesting to find out. 🙂
We have the gold.
“America’s Golden Age.”
How many times did he talk about something being a “gold mine” ?
I’m imagining:
New commercial, featuring PDJT with a golden mustache:
” Got Gold?”
I will believe it when I see it. 20 tears of war. Obama then Biden. 37 trillion in the hole.
All the corruption uncovered in less than a month by DOGE.
And We have the gold?

How the U.S. (military strategists) planned to annex Canada if victorious in a larger war with Britain
If the U.S. lost, they assumed Canada would ask for ‘Alaska be awarded to her,’ notes short-lived 1930s war strategy War Plan Red (National Post)

Here’s the Declassified “War Plan Red” that considered the U.S.A’s military led annexation of Canada. Maybe President Trump can just sign an Executive Order to restore this order and then order a renewed implementation of this as Commander-in-Chief. He can tell the press conference reporters that this is unvaoidable due to Canada’s dangerous trade advantages that are endangering the people of the USA. Defense Secretary Hegseth will get on it ASAP.
