🤦♂️ Metro (aka the dispatch center) attached them to the brush incident, meaning instead of creating a new incident number for the structure fire they attached E275 to the Palisades fire coming under command and control of the Palisades IC (Incident Commander). They didn’t get any additional resources, but they were left to attack those fire on their own – i.e. do the best they could.
We were first due to a house fire in Moreno Valley one morning because they were left with only a few cover engines due to large vegetation fires. We may had been on a 2nd Alarm under normal circumstances. Our station was 7 miles away and we arrived just behind another engine that was covering who cleared a medical aid. Normally the first due engine would’ve only been a few blocks away.
Things happen. It’s difficult when resources get stripped down before cover engines can be moved in. One day there were two structure fires that started around the same time. We were the only engine company available between Rancho Mirage and Coachella. We ran 6 back-to-back calls several roll areas away traversing back-and-forth. It took over an hour for cover engines to move into the area.

I spent my entire adult life in the fire department. If there was “no response” to the fire for 45 minutes, then that means it wasn’t reported. Fire engines can respond to something they don’t know is happening. Dispatcher can dispatch resources to something they don’t know existed.
We had a fatal apartment fire (I wasn’t on it, but worked at the station it occurred at). The dispatcher dispatched the fire on the wrong repeater so the tones didn’t activate at the stations. This was pre-push button acknowledgement of calls and no one “copied” the call (meaning they received the dispatch). It was in the middle of the night, but it took a few for the dispatchers to realize no one was responding to the fire. The dispatchers called (on the telephone) the stations in reverse order (furtherest away to closest).
The fire occurred just a few blocks from the fire station. When they arrived, a person was deceased on a second floor balcony. There was a sheriff’s deputy at scene the whole time, just waiting for someone with a ladder to show up. It took a long time for the relationship to heal between us fire guys and some of the deputies. We took the brunt of the blame even though everyone responded as quickly as they could, once they were notified of the fire.
There is video from a US Attorney who’s house backs onto where the fire started… he watched it grow while waiting for the fire trucks to show up. All he saw was one helicopter dump water after the fire had grown to more than one helo of water could take care of.
His wife called it in… and it took 45 mins before anything showed up – which was the helo.

All 9-1-1 calls are logged and dispatch entries along with radio traffic.
Was the first incident initially reported as a rubbish fire? Vague report of smoke? Don’t know LAFD dispatch protocols, but safe those would be 1 or 2 engine responses.
Access issues? Fire engines can’t drive up to a hill side. If no immediate access and potential for structure threat before being able to put water on fire (judgment call) then engines could’ve been evaluating structure threats. It takes time between dispatch and arrival of helicopter.
There’s a lot of factors. I’d wait for some more info one way or the other.
For crying out loud! Did you watch the video? Those people are very well aware of the difference between a rubbish fire and a fire. A fire had already been extinguished in that same area a week earlier… rapid response to that call.
What is your angle here? People are reporting their experiences and you try to make excuses for the failure to respond…

Their perception could be that the fire department didn’t respond. They don’t know.
I’m not making excuses. I saw the video and they would have no idea what fire department resources are doing.
I’d have to see a map where the fire started in relation to access.
Let’s say it’s 1-mile from the road to fire. You have to hike in, which you wouldn’t do most likely, it’s unsafe.
It takes time for a helicopter to start up, fly to the location.
All I’m saying is I did this my whole life in So Cal. I’d wait to see the dispatch logs and 9-1-1 calls before attaching to an opinion.
That might be how it should work, but in DEI-obsessed L.A., who knows? A slow response time wouldn’t surprise me a bit.
